if you need to see a movie, this should be your last resort
rickdickulous-16 September 2009
bad things happen at a resort in the desert in Mexico. the resort is now cursed and anyone who goes there gets possessed and they do bad things to people they would normally would not do bad things to. decent storyline that could have had possibilities but bad acting and writing make it a movie to watch only for the attractive women that are in it. America olivio is hot. the other girls are pretty hot. there's only one decent nude scene but its not America. the movie is only about 70 minutes long. the copy i rented had no extras. i cannot recommend this movie for viewing unless its your last resort. thats all i can really say about this movie.

Technically acceptable
abark9 August 2009
For what it is this movie is decently made. Except for the early parts in the bar it is a decently shot and the people involved seem to have a grasp on making a movie.

There are some good scenes as well, including some tense moments that are relatively well acted.

Unfortunately, it is hampered by generally bad writing. Again, some scenes are fairly well done and well acted, but are unfortunately overshadowed by too many scenes with distracting acting.

With stronger scripts and acting the director might come out with some good stuff in the future.

too much set-up for such a short film
movieman_kev18 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
After a prologue showing a man brutally murdering a bound woman, five girls take a vacation in Mexico to celebrate one of them getting married. After a night of partying four of them are abandoned in the middle of nowhere by some Mexican thugs (the fifth one ,Sophie, got lucky the night before and didn't join them for the little trip) As Sophie and her 'one night stand' guy and his friend look for her missing friends, the other ladies stumble over a strange church/resort that seems to affect them in a bad way.

For a movie that's only one hour & 7 minutes (excluding credits), this one sure takes awhile on the set-up. The horror elements don't even really come into effect until the last 10-15 minutes (the guy from the prologue is relegated to just a two short flashbacks and those scenes seem like filler. The movie itself is alright for what it is, i guess. The production values are decent and it did keep me (semi) interested. Of course the ending leaves it WIDE open for a sequel.

Eye Candy: Sita Young gets topless, her hair covers her nipples for the most part though

My Grade: C-

Lionsgate DVD Extras: Only a promo for Break.com; trailer for this movie; and trailers for "Frontier(s)", "The Slaughter". That's all

Do not check into The Last Resort!!!!!
toyman196711 August 2009
I just rented this movie from the Redbox today and I must say that if you are looking for a good movie to pull up a blanket and a pillow to cover your eyes with this is NOT your movie!!!!!!! But if you are looking for a movie to pull up a blanket and a pillow to help you fall asleep to well then this IS your movie!!!! The acting is bad, the violence is dull and the script is horrible. I fell asleep 3 times during this movie. I was waiting for it to get better or at least watchable but it never got to either point. The length of this movie is barely just over an hour but it is an hour of my life that I want back. Hey, at least one thing good came out of it, I only wasted a dollar rental. Take my advice and DO NOT RENT and PLEASE DO NOT BUY this one!!! Lionsgate has many other films in their library that are passable but this is NOT one of them!!!!

Another terrible movie
flflyr-com24 August 2009
Two days in a row I've been burned by DVD artwork. There are no scenes of a sexy woman in a bikini anywhere in this movie. Why do these movies portray scenes on the DVD art that do not exist anywhere in the movie? It's bait and switch! The acting was mediocre, and the story line was just dumb. The "club" was not believable. It wasn't playing music you would expect to hear at a tourist club, and there were about 7 people there. This movie is so low budget they couldn't even afford to pay enough extras to fill the club. And why cast good looking women if you're not going to show any skin?? Even if they don't have nudity, at least give us them in bikinis at the beach. You may have well cast 5 dudes instead. Girls partying in Mexico and not even a bikini shot??? Who are the idiots who make these movies?? The story line is loosely played out, and it's up to the viewer to figure out what exactly is happening to the girls at the resort. The idea is good, but not done well in any shape or form. A terrible movie. DO NOT RENT!!!

Really poor
dbborroughs14 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Good looking but really badly acted barely feature length film about a South of the border resort that possesses whom ever ends up there. Starting with a ghoulish opening where a mad man kills a woman only to be killed by the locals, the film shifts to the arrival of a bunch of girls to a resort somewhere in Mexico. They are there for a bachelorette party. After a wild night four of the girls go with two guys from the resort to see the sights only the sights the guys want to see is the girls. Things turn ugly and the girls are stranded, with one of them bleeding. They wander into the cursed resort, but before they do so they call their friend who is still back in her room. Eventually everyone ends up at the cursed resort where the body count sky rockets. What can I say? the gore is good, the rest isn't. Adequately shot the weak cast and script just let it all down, its just dumb. Its 75 minutes you'll never get back

A ton of wasted potential
kannibalcorpsegrinder30 January 2014
When a group of girlfriends on a bachelorette party in Mexico get stranded out in the desert, they find themselves seeking shelter in an abandoned shrine built by a deranged madman and his psychotic followers and slowly find themselves succumbing to the whims of the spiritual followers still residing there.

This turned out to be a pretty disappointing effort, mostly hurt by the fact that this one's so short it really can't get a whole lot in or explore the potential of it's ideas by it's brevity and extremely short amount of time actually at the location. The fact that the girls' out-on-the-town hijinks takes up the first thirty-forty minutes in a movie barely over an hour, which when coupled with the second subplot about the left-behind friend trying to rescue them, makes even less scenes in the location which compiles barely fifteen minutes of screen time, the majority of that coming from the rescue attempt at the end. That leaves us to see the results of what happened in the location but the desired actions, as the aftermath makes it look highly enjoyable had we seen it played out. With a weak back-story that's hardly explained and a decided lack of on-screen help from others beyond merely repeating the same thing over-and-over again, this one doesn't have a lot going for it.

Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity and a mild sex scene.

Doesn't even rate as a B flick.
salem_az18 August 2009
First off the film quality was just awful, the music was even worse. It was full of clichés. Five chicks and a haunted resorted full of bad mojo. Everything in this flick is predictable. Girls are in Mexico doing the whole bachlorete party, they all get drunk, one "hooks" up, and of course they get separated, mugged, robbed, shot and lost in the middle of no where. No imagination what so ever. And low and behold shocker.. they start fighting amongst themselves. There was some bad over acting. It was never explained what the bad mojo was beside some voices in the girls head or how it got there. The evil or bad mojo possesses the girls. There is nothing good about this film to say except is was short. I almost turned it off in the first 20 minutes, absolute yarn!!! I had more fun cleaning my toilet!

Just didn't get it!
lilly_lex10316 August 2009
Im a huge horror movie lover! In fact maybe people at blockbuster think im probably into it a little to much cause i just love em. But this is def. a trip to hell! I was willing to give credit as the movie went on, but not credit was due anywhere! When i watched the trailer it seemed like it was gonna also include a lot of nudity (which i don't mind if its not tooooo raunchy) ... But the nudity was pointless, the killing was, and the end makes u say "What the heck just happened"? I don't recommend this movie...try the uninvited if you want something creepy but awesome at the same time! I really thought this would be a good movie, and idk if it's the writing, or not enough money for the film, (which it seemed they did well enough with money), but i think it COULD OF BEEN a good film, given a more detailed plot...

Just press the "Forward Button"
maelzel-587-95514020 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
What a bad movie. I had lost 25 minutes of my life. This movie is so bad and boring, that is simply impossible to watch without pressing the forward button. A really good movie if you are trying to fall sleep. In ten minutes you'll be snoring.

Awful acting (Even for some stupid girls trying to get laid), nonsense plot, terrible editing, low - quality film making, some Mexican clairvoyant whit scary visions (what a cliché, where's is the writing? it doesn't exist in this kind of movies?), written, directed, edited,by just one guy (That doesn't have a clue about film making). Low, very low budget, not even a really hot chick for making it work.

Don't watch it. I've seen better home-made movies than this piece of crap.

Not as bad as has been said....
KungFuVooDoo30 December 2009
Okay, so as is my usual habits, I rented this movie and then read the reviews and message boards while opening credits were rolling. For the most part, everybody was in agreement that this movie sucked something fierce, however, I don't really share their opinion. Now as a rule, I WILL give a movie a bad review if it deserves, but in this case, I don't think it does. Essentially, four women end up alone in a deserted resort that has a bloody, ugly past where evil spirits still reside. What makes this story work is A) Interior Mexico is a damn scary place and B) The resort, even in the daytime is creepy as hell. Agreed, the acting isn't top bill Hollywood fair. None of the girls are ugly, but a few are hotter than Georgia asphalt. I wish they'd made the movie a little longer and given a bit more story to the back story, but that's just me. Overall, I thought it was a decent B flick. Don't expect Tarantion or Polanski and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Low Grade Torture-Porn
JoeB13128 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
That's really all there is to say about this film.

The setup, a group of five girls go on a bachelorette party in Mexico for the most obnoxious of the group, whom you can't really believe 1) anyone would want to marry or 2) she really HAS four friends, much less ones willing to drive to a foreign country with her.

Anyway, after the protagonist decides that she's going to hook up with a guy she just met (seriously, does anyone really do that anymore?) the other four decide to take a tour with two locals and their "tour guide truck". well, they looked trustworthy. Up until the point they robbed them, but decided they were too annoying to rape. (Seriously, that's in the dialog. And they were upset about it!) The quartet wander into a resort previously used by some devil worshiping cultists, where an evil force makes them resort to cattiness and cannibalism. Yeh gods, its the epicenter of PMS as a spiritual force!

Well, the last friend goes to look for her with the hookup and his buddy. They are taken out by the same thieves, but turn the tables, only to find the gals are completely taken over by the demonic force. Or something.... I think I stopped caring at this point and was just counting down how many victims they had left to kill before this thing was over.

Really?!?!
o-townz14 August 2009
I'll TRY to give this movie an honest review. So honestly, I wanted to gouge my own eyes out no more than 5 minutes into the movie! Honestly, I felt as if the $1 I had just spent at the RedBox was $1 too much. Honestly, I'm upset that the time I'd just spend watching this movie was lost forever. Honestly, I'll try to read more reviews and check out more trailers before I ever check out another movie like this again! In all honesty if there had been a little more nudity like I had initially anticipated in a "B" movie such as this with (5) beautiful women in it at a bachelorette party in Mexico, then my ADD mind would have been able to better focus on the entirety of the film.

The movie is not that good
gelobtorres16 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was not that good. The plot was just natural. The acting were not that good and it was too short to explain and show the viewers what is has to say. I had been looking for something but I didn't find it. The casting was weak. I was able to expect what would happen next. The characters are so few. On the other side, this movie may not be suitable for children due to some violent scenes and some sexual contents and languages. The number of harsh words was enormous. I gave it a two out of ten just because it was shot in a nice place. I think it would be better if they placed subtitles to some scenes where in other language was used. I may not recommend it to all those horror fans for the story is weak.

"Solaris" meets "Real World: Cancun"
jfgibson7312 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
5 young girls go to Mexico for a bachelorette party. They drink, party, and hook up. The next morning, four of them go on a sigthseeing tour and end up getting robbed and left for dead. The fifth girl has to track her friends down with the help of two vacationing party boys.

That was the setup. Then, in the second half of the movie, it turns into "The Shining." The girls take refuge in a deserted town which turns out to be an evil place with a history. It causes people to go insane and do violent things such as kill friends, eat body parts, and have sex with dead bodies. When the fifth girl and the boys finally find the four friends, they are already totally crazy. Sophia, played by America Olivo (who I liked in Bitch Slap), tries to rescue her friends but ends up going crazy, too.

Not much of a story. The girls are like five versions of one character with nothing to distinguish them from one another. I fast-forwarded through a lot of it and I don't feel like I missed anything. Boring, routine thriller that fails to have any effect on the viewer.

Vacation gone wrong
kosmasp13 June 2022
I expect people to be able to distinguish movies and reality. Your next vacation will not end up like anything from this movie. Of course it is always good to look out for yourself and not being taken advantage of. But that is true for every part of your life. And many other situations that have nothing to do with vacation - or celebrating a friends engagement.

A girls trip of sorts. But one that is not going to end well ... for at least some of those who are involved. And as always there is a warning. Not that people ever listen to those. Anyway, it does take some time, but we do root for America Olivo. Yes God bless America (sorry for the pun and I can only imagine she is sick of that joke) - not everything works actually, but this is a horror movie. All things considering this is decent overall - if you are into horror movies that is.

Talk about unconvincing and overcliched
nrabond00715 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has got to be one of the worst, if not the worst horror films of all time. Not only does it not incite any form of terror, but is a script basically written by a kindergartener:

Old Woman: Your friends are at a resort Heroine A: What kind of resort?

Basically the story revolves around a group of girls who take off to an island paradise for their friend's bachelorette party, within minutes they are all partying like crazy, eating cake, getting soused, and making moves on random guys who claim to be movie producers, one of which comes clean about being a school teacher minutes later and is quickly bedded. As our main heroine (not the bachelorette) is making footprints on the ceiling her friends continue to get soused and decide to take a tour of the island with two locals the next morning. After driving for a short while one of the tour guides pulls a gun and tries to rob them, two of the four girls run from the car, one pulls her cell phone to call her friend and the other just screams. The bachelorette manages to run furthest from the car before getting shot and wounded... Meanwhile we see our main heroine get the message from her friend and immediately dial 911 to get laughed at because her friends were missing for only four hours. The girls are dropped in a barren wasteland and wander to find a resort. Within minutes inside the resort they begin to insult each other and call each other names for no apparent reason. The haunting of the resort is lazily explained in a random note found in a room with very weak flashback scenes. I could go on and on but I don't want to feel dumber. The ending is weak, and if this film thinks it can define stir crazy over just a few minutes of being in a given location it is sorely mistakened. This movie completely misses in terms of fear and terror, and should stop trying to be like "The Shining" immediately.

Another good movie with America Olivo
angiris30 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A pretty good movie with some great actresses. Olivo especially.. Where the story may be lacking, the funny, gory and interesting parts make up for it. The movie may be a bit of a cliché so to speak but thats not a bad thing considering they aren't holding back with the psychotic aspects. Really people! They are not holding back.

5 out of 10 stars for being a above average pretty good movie for, say, like a horror movie night or something. This movie doesn't have the shocking and intense surprise type of moments like the grudge, but it's still pretty good though for what regards gore and...well, the satanic, hedonistic and awesome details included.

A decent horror movie. Move than I can say for most new horrors nowadays.

I can definitely recommend that one should go check it out. Online for free or something if you don't wanna pay for it. It's worth it.

Yawn.
dcampton16 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Another solid premise turned to crap. Someone had a valid concept that the screenwriters couldn't cash in on.

Robbed and abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Finding sanctuary (pun) in an isolated place. Good premise, many paths for interesting stories and plots. Especially with the religious aspects.

But nope, more lazy writing. Gain freedom and eat everyone.

Good idea, too low of a budget.
TdSmth58 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In the intro some old guy writes a letter. Next to him is some bound girl. Mexicans with guns arrive and he slashes the girl up not before giving one of those villain-in-movies speeches.

Some girls travel to "Mexico" (it looks a lot like California) for a bachelorette party. They go to party at the seediest bar they find, but first they buy Mexican trinkets in a back alley where a nice old lady offers to read one of the girls's (Sophia) hand. Of course she sees doom and gloom.

At the bar they meet two guys. Sophia ends up going home with one of the guys. She wakes up late the next day and finds out that the other girls have left for a sightseeing tour with two strangers. These end up robbing the girls, shooting one of them in the leg, and leave them somewhere in the desert. One of the girls manages to make a call to Sophia and lets her know that she sees palm trees and a bell tower. The girls make it to the place which once was a resort but little by little the girls start flipping out and becoming aggressive.

Sophia recruits her guy and the other guy to ask around but all the locals freak out at the mention of the place with the trees and the bell. That is until they meet the two crooks that offer to take them there. Fortunately on their way, one of the guys realizes that the two are thieves and take action to avoid becoming their next victims.

Now they are at the resort and what they find is not at all what they expected.

The Last Resort is a very low budget horror thriller with a pretty good idea, a good cast that does its best, but they just can't overcome the low budget. As song as things are filmed in broad daylight the movie looks good, but in lower light, things look pretty bad and of course as a horror movie good chunks of it have got to be filmed at night. As with most movies, little is done to establish the characters. One girl is slutty, the other virginal--that's how far movies will go. But at least the main idea, while not original, is neat--a place of freedom, where people get to explore their wildest, unlimited self--however ugly it may turn out to be, and here it does get nasty and gory.
