Korean independent rights firm, More In Group is using Hong Kong FilMart to launch inspirational drama film “My Lovely Angel.”
The film focuses on the developing relationship between a lonely man and a deaf-blind girl, and its backers say that the attention it gathers on release will be used to promote legislation in Korea to help deaf-blind people, a proposal that has already been nicknamed the ‘Helen Keller law’.
Filmed in October and November last year in a post-covid-lull, the film is recently completed. It is now targeting a premiere at Korea’s National Assembly and a May 2021 theatrical launch.
Working with a $3 million budget, “Angel” was co-directed by Lee Chang-won and Kwon Sung-mo, a music and shorts director who was awarded the Sonje prize at the Busan International Film Festival in 2018.
The main roles belong to Jin Goo, one of the stars of Bong Joon-ho’s “Mother” and hit...

South Korea’s Cj Entertainment, the studio behind multiple Oscar-winner “Parasite,” confirmed that it is leading its AFM sales slate with “Decision to Leave,” the newly announced title by another master director, “Oldboy” helmer Park Chan-wook.
The studio is pitching the film as a crime-romancer with dialogue in Korean and Chinese. The story involves a detective, to be played by Park Hae-il (“Memories of Murder”), who develops romantic feelings for a woman, played by China’s Tang Wei, who should be the prime suspect in a murder case he is investigating.
The studio provides no other updated information on delivery, production budget or supplementary casting. When Cj announced the film last month, it said that it would be investor and local Korean distributor of the film, but told Variety at the time that it had not settled on the international sales agency role.

Korean films love the narrative of people in power being corrupted and trampling on the poor and weak to fill their pockets. Veteran director Chung Ji-young’s “Black Money”, his first work in seven years following his blacklisting by the previous conservative regime, also follows this narrative. Just like his previous works “National Security” and “Unbowed” which preceded this, Chung takes inspiration from a real-life case to weave a creative nonfiction story on a financial irregularities case that rocked South Korea.
“Black Money” is screening at Florence Korean Film Festival 2020
“Black Money” opens on two characters, a male and the female, having a discussion about their involvement in a corruption case that both of them were a part of. Shortly after, the man gets killed in a vehicular homicide but the female manages to escape, only to be found dead later in a suspicious suicide. A text message sent from...

Set up by former Showbox executive Helen Jung, who had been behind multiple hit films such as historical drama “A Taxi Driver,” crime drama “Inside Men,” as well as disaster pic “Tunnel” and 2014 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “A Hard Day,” Acemaker Movieworks began its journey in the Korean film industry in 2018.
As with several other new entrants at the time, Acemaker represented a combination of industry veterans and non-industry capital. It sourced its money from the former owner of cosmetic company Carver Korea, which Unilever acquired in 2017.
“[We] seek diversity in content and support creators without prejudice,” says the company in its mission statement. Acemaker’s line-up includes not only strong box- office hits, but also festival-acclaimed slates such as “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil.”
Indeed, over the past two years, Acemaker has built up a colorful catalog of films, including 2019 Cannes Midnight Screening title “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil,...

The Florence Korea Film Festival is back on the 19th of March 2020. Now in its 18th edition, it’s a moment of well-deserved celebration and recognition for South Korean cinema which – as every year – is presented with the usual enthusiasm and pride.
Guest of honor is the star Cho Jin-woong, an extraordinary interpreter with one of the most formidable careers of his generation to his credit. From a terrible “bad guy” in numerous thriller films, in recent years he has explored more dramatic and intimate roles with unchanged talent. A retrospective and a master class will be dedicated to him. Cho Jin-woong is also the protagonist of the opening film “Black Money” by Master Chung Ji-young.
“Parasite” is scheduled as an event out of competition: an opportunity to watch, or watch again, on the big screen a film that has already entered the history of cinema.
