Filling in the blank pages.

Lewes connives his way into GCHQ, to convince them that his plan or a rogue band of fighters is a good idea, he finds a set of ears ready to listen.

I enjoyed the first episode, I really did engage with this second part, everything seemed to click into place, it's a pretty wild storyline, the birthplace I'd The SAS as it were.

I really did appreciate the arrival of Dominic West, he's a fine actor, he added a bit of sophisticated charm, a good balance for the raucousness going on.

It's an action packed romp, so expect lots of action, lots of shouting, it's an out and out riot, impossible not to enjoy.

Immaculately produced once again, I liked the use of old footage mixed in.

9/10.

Accelerating slowly

So now the pace is beginning to pick up although there is still a lot of exposition to be done. This episode seems to have elements of both The Dirty Dozen and Hustle - though paying homage to neither.

From the little I know of the formation of the SAS this story seems broadly in keeping with real events although obviously the dialogue, which is beautifully dry and witty for much of the episode, must be a work of the writer's imagination.

One criticism, that may become moot in later episodes, is that the action is all very boys'club and chummy; it is not easy to place this against the background of the war that was raging along the North African coast. Perhaps a little more inclusion of that, even if it means more archive footage would lend the sense of urgency that the missions require.

At the moment I'm left with the erroneous impression that Axis and Allies are having a little tiff which David, Paddy and the chaps will sort out in the next couple of episodes ...

Episode 2

The pacing was better in the second episode. The introduction of Dominic West as Dudley Wrangel Clarke helps.

His character is not short of confidence and subterfuge. He has an idea about forming his own specialist unit and the Air Service name was part of his disinformation campaign.

Dudley is first seen wearing women's clothes. The real Dudley Wrangel Clarke was once arrested for wearing women's clothing in Madrid.

Meanwhile Stirling uses is own methods of cunning and subterfuge to get approval for his own unit.

It is only a matter of time for both Sterling and Wrangel Clarke to have a meeting of minds. Both need each other's help and they form the basis of their unit.

All the men are regarded as tough or subversives. Troublemakers.
