Photo: ‘Stuck Apart’/Netflix Sometimes, we all need a little something…different. Whether you’re a casual filmmaker or self-acclaimed cinephile, it does good to stretch our Cinema muscles and put ourselves out of our comfort zones. If you’re a fan of Charlie Kaufmann or Jean-Luc Godard this new Netflix release will be right up your alley; if not, it’s worth a watch anyway. ‘Stuck Apart’ (aka ‘Azizler’) is a quirky, existential Turkish feature by brothers Dural and Yagmar Taylan. This is the fourth feature film from the brother duo, preceded by the critically acclaimed ‘Okul’, ‘Küçük Kiyamet’ (aka ‘The Little Apocalypse’) and ‘Vavien’. The premise follows the middle-aged Aziz (Engin Günaydin) through a mid-life crisis, an unfortunate hot tub incident, and what might be the longest breakup ever put to screen - that is, if time has meaning at all in this unusual piece of Cinema. Netflix has long since blown past the snooty preconceptions of the Hollywood elite that dubbed them as a mere streaming service, with the company currently churning out some of the most acclaimed shows on television and countless feature-length awards season contenders on an annual basis. The old guard tried to resist the inevitable paradigm shift for as long as possible, but based on both the quantity and quality of the in-house originals, Netflix can now comfortably be viewed as genuine rivals to the traditional major studios.
Of course, that takes a whole lot of investment, with close to $20 billion being funnelled into content last year, and that number only set to rise even higher. The Coronavirus pandemic may have decimated the theatrical industry, but Netflix has seen their subscriber count and viewership numbers continue to grow. It’s been a typically busy week for Netflix, who added some great new content to keep us all in catch-up mode as we continue to mostly be stuck at home. Particular highlights include the Nicolas Cage-fronted History of Swear Words, high-profile original film Pieces of a Woman, and French drama Lupin. What, then, are some of the television shows, movies, and other material that have been made available on the platform over the last few days?
Well, on the series side of things, A History of Swear Words is a documentary wherein Cage plays the host, and each episode deals with a different word, tracing its history and various cultural contexts. We also received Lupin, which updates the French thief and master of disguise for the present day, as well as new seasons of reality shows. In addition, the streamer released documentaries including the Martin Scorsese-directed Pretend It’s a City,...

Netflix is adding a bunch of great new titles today. This Friday, January 8th, the streaming service has made seven fresh movies and TV shows available and what’s more, they’re all originals. There’s new family content, documentaries, international titles, anime and pretty much something to cover all bases. There’s nothing quite as big as yesterday’s Pieces of a Woman – the awards-worthy indie drama – but these newbies are still worth checking out.
First up, animated effort Charming debuts today. Though released in other territories back in 2018 and 2019, it’s only now making its way to the US and it sports a twisted fairy tale narrative in which Prince Charming must go on a quest to find his true love, after becoming engaged to Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne and Ashley Tisdale star.

The streaming services continue their ceaseless rollout of new content, and several fresh titles are debuting this weekend.
First up, arriving on HBO Max is The King of Staten Island, a semi-autobiographical comedy drama partly inspired by the life of its star, comedian and SNL alum Pete Davidson. A waster high school dropout still living with his mother dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, but is stifled by his medical and mental health issues, which are only compounded when his mom begins dating a new man who’s a firefighter like his deceased father.
Also on HBO Max is season 2 of The Alienist, subtitled Angel of Darkness after the novel on which it’s based, seeing the return of its ad hoc team of investigators, this time looking into the brutal deaths of young children that may be the work of a serial killer, while digging into familiar themes of societal status,...

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

We’ve only got a few weeks left of 2020, so we might as well start looking ahead to 2021. When it comes to new arrivals dropping on Netflix in January, it’s too early to get our hands on a full list at this stage, but a small amount of titles have already been announced, including a bunch of newly licensed movies that’ll be added on the first of the month as well as a couple of much-anticipated originals that are on the way throughout the rest of January.
On New Year’s Day, Netflix is delivering a number of classic 2000s films. A couple of them are Christmas flicks, too, so make sure to squeeze those in just before the festive season officially ends. Oddly enough, both star Vince Vaughn as well – 2007’s Fred Claus and 2008’s Four Christmases. Meanwhile, Zac Efron comedy 17 Again goes up the same day,...
