Saroyan says the body turns succinylcholine into potassium; the drug does not contain and can not be turned into potassium, but high doses cause muscles to release potassium into the blood stream. Bones says succinylcholine is one of the earliest anesthetics known; sux is not an anesthetic but an extremely fast acting muscle relaxant whose properties were first noted in the 1950s, while nitrous oxide was a surgical anesthetic by 1800.
Hodgins swabs phenolphthalein on a copper spearhead to test for blood. In the Kastle-Meyer test (first developed in 1903), first phenolphthalein and then hydrogen peroxide are applied to the sample. Endogenous peroxidase in RBCs will break down the hydrogen peroxide and cause the phenolphthalein to turn pink. Copper is noted for giving a false positive on this test.
