More than 30 years after enduring “16 Candles,” Molly Ringwald is heading back to the school dance, and “Riverdale” couldn’t be happier.
The former teen icon, known for her membership in the ‘80s Brat Pack and her John Hughes pedigree, guest stars on Thursday’s “Riverdale” as Archie’s mom Mary. She and her estranged husband Fred (Luke Perry) will be back together temporarily to see their son perform at the high school dance. While the casting was a natural fit because of Ringwald’s red hair, her teen star cred also helped. Both “Riverdale” and “13 Reasons Why” are two teen-centric shows that have been bringing back former teen stars to play the older generation, and reaping the benefits.

Chicago – Can a Blu-ray be both great and a likely placeholder for a future Special Edition? “The Hunger Games” makes that case. The lack of a commentary track or deleted scenes (and Lionsgate’s double-dipping track record) lead one to believe that a Special Edition will likely hit stores in conjunction with “Catching Fire” but this is still a great release with hours of special features and a stellar HD video and audio transfer. And the movie has held up well since its wave of publicity has subsided in favor of Summer blockbusters. It’s a great flick, one of the best Hollywood films of 2012 to date.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
My friend Erik (follow @EriktheMovieman) put it perfectly when he said “Gary Ross actually made a movie.” What he meant was he didn’t make a product, a piece of merchandising designed to appeal only to the consumers already programmed to buy it.

Harry Potter is done and Twilight is coming to an end. There’s room for a new wave of teenage dramas and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games was ripe for the picking. Director Gary Ross adapts the messy and unbalanced dystopian story to the best of his ability, but even his talents aren’t strong enough to off-set such a half thought out script that trades character progression for sappy romance that aims at the hearts of shallow romantics.
In a dystopian future the nation of Panem is divided between 12 districts. Each year there is a game held that pits 2 youngsters from each district against each other in a brutal fight to the death. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) offers herself as tribute to protect her sister and insecure Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) is chosen as the male counterpart.
The two must train together in hopes of getting the upper-hand against the kids from the other districts.

Chicago – Hot on the heels of the return of the DVD Round-Up, we’re back with its fraternal twin, the Blu-Ray Round-Up, a collection of recently-released HD titles that could easily go ignored while you deal with the heat wave blanketing the country. Get out to the store. Pick one of these up. Come back to your A/C. Enjoy.
The Blu-Ray Round-Up is primarily for informational purposes but two of these recent releases are two of our favorites — “Amelie” and “Brazil.” The latter is depressingly bare-bones, especially when compared to the hard-to-find Criterion DVD release. Criterion, get on this. Get the rights back and release a Blu-ray. Until then, pick up this edition just to own one of Terry Gilliam’s best.
“Wake Wood” was released on July 5th, 2011.
“Brazil” was released on July 12th, 2011.

Fox's new comedy series, Mixed Signals, will be premiering midseason and will air on Tuesday nights at 9:30 p.m (see Fox's full fall and midseason schedules). We have a promo and three sneak peeks for you below.
Mixed Signals is a new comedy series about three longtime friends and their attempts to reconcile the irreconcilable: to balance their relationships with their need for freedom. The series reveals how friendships and romances enhance – and further complicate – the lives of men and the women who love them.
Ethan (Kris Marshall, Human Target, "My Family") is the perpetual bachelor. He loves women, and when he's in, he's all in – at least for three weeks. Charming, genuine and hopelessly independent, Ethan is finding out that as he gets older, the pool of women who are willing to take things day by day is rapidly evaporating.

NEW YORK -- It was mostly trick and not treat for the networks on Halloween night, where many shows got ratings scares amid lower viewing overall.
Private Practice was the night's top show in adults 18-49 with 11.2 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/10 share in the demo, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. But Practice fell to its lowest demo rating ever, dropping 19% from a year ago. CBS' Criminal Minds (14.7 million, 3.5/9) tied its lowest rating so far this season.
It was even worse for critical fave Pushing Daisies (8.5 million, 2.6/8), which dropped 30% from its season average. CBS' Kid Nation (6.9 million, 2.0/6) was also low.
NBC averaged 6.4 million viewers and a 2.3/7 in adults 18-49 for a two-hour special Phenomenon that took the 9 p.m. slot of Bionic Woman. Fox was in repeats all night because of the World Series running shorter than hoped, as was the CW.
CSI: NY (13.5 million, 3.6/10) won at 10 p.m.
