In three weeks - two of those in the beginning of the COVID outbreak and massive restrictions - the film surpassed the box office record of Iceland's domestic hit for the year before.
The idea of the film started as a joke in a fishing trip, several years ago. The joke was revisited every fishing trip and stories were added to the plot. After several fishing trips and crazy stories being added, a script materialized and the film was shot in 17 days.
The producers rented the salmon river Myrarkvisl in North-East Iceland for two weeks as a location. After realizing where the film was shot, the main actors did not need a lot of convincing to enter the production. They all are enthusiastic anglers and used the time to fish between takes.
In the sound post-production, a scene where a ram attacks the actors proved to be a bit problematic in terms of finding realistic ram sounds. To solve this, the producers visited the sound designer and suggested they would dub the ram. This was done in one take and is used in the film.
The success of The last Fishing trip. made it possible to shoot a sequel in June 2021 - The very last Fishing trip - to be premiered in 2022. In the sequel the heroes experience the pressure of fishing in a bigger and more expensive river as well as facing the consequences of what went down in the previous fishing trip. The Markell brothers have always stated that they envisioned a five film franchise when they set out to shoot the first film.
