Trapped in a mall with 'Criminal Minds'
TheLittleSongbird15 July 2016
Maybe not 'Criminal Minds' at its peak, but one of the best episodes overall from Season 3 and a very strong reminder of what made the show so great.

"Seven Seconds" fares very highly in the production values, especially in the photography that has style, atmosphere and class. The mall setting may seem ordinary and harmless, but the more desperate the situation gets the more the atmosphere, suspense and such builds to dizzying heights in the genuinely tension-filled climactic moments.

The music, while not enhancing as effectively as some other episodes, at least always fits with the mood and never distracts. "Seven Seconds" is directed with the right amount of palpable tension and ominous edge, and the writing is thought-provoking, smart and layered.

Regarding the story, it's not the most complex or the most original of 'Criminal Minds' and the identity of the criminal is not entirely shocking. However, what still makes the storytelling so great is not just the taut pacing and how the tension keeps building and building in an already nightmarish situation, but "Seven Seconds" not once loses sight of what makes 'Criminal Minds' as good a show as it is and the character moments and how the characters are written, with every single character shown being affected by the case in some way, delight hugely here.

Highlights are Hotch, as a father figure, becoming increasingly desperate in the climactic scenes (loved the moments between him and Jack too), Morgan understanding and feeling the pain of the situation, Penelope's ray of sunshine comic moments without being misplaced and JJ showing the sympathetic side that made people like her so much in the first place (this was before she became out of character and over-used when brought back in a large part of the latter seasons). For me particularly strongly done were Reid's interaction with Jeremy and most notably Prentiss interrogating the criminal, literally digging right deep into them until they snap.

As for the criminal/unsub, there are ones in the show that are monsters with no redeeming qualities (George Foyet), ones that have done a lot of wrong but one feels really bad for (Jonny McHale, somewhat) and then there are those that are not just a different kind of loathsome but really are beneath contempt. It's for me in this last category where "Seven Seconds" criminal falls into, due to endangering a young child's life with knowledge of a potentially fatal medical condition but also with a complete lack of remorse or empathy.

The acting from everybody is great, Matthew Gray Gubler and Paget Brewster particularly shine of the regulars while Suzanne Cryer plays up to their level.

Overall, not 'Criminal Minds' at its peak but still a great episode indeed, containing everything that makes the show as good a show as it is. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Great use of the whole team

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

Sometimes I feel in certain episodes the team is under used in the cases they are trying to solve but this episode every team member is used perfectly.

Not only was the plot thrilling as you knew it had to be one of the people the agent had already interacted with but the twists and turns this episode took were very captivating.

I'm not gonna lie I thought it was a little bit predictable that the uncle was guilty of something you could just tell from the boys demeanor at the beginning of the episode but that twist on my gosh.

I thought Morgan and Reid did an excellent job profiling Jeremy and profiling the missing kids home life. Reid did a great job with trying to extract more information from jeremy by both empathizing with him and intimidating him. Hotchner did his fair share interrogating the uncle to his breaking point. But the stand out in this episode was definitely prentiss interrogating the aunt exposing her motives and piecing the puzzle together faster than the rest of the team.

I thought this episode was also particularly emotional after if they found the little girl so I was pretty sure she wasn't gonna make it but I was happy to see that she did.

I did have a few faults with this episode one of which was some of the acting by the victims family. The missing girls mom was all right, The dad was just straight out annoying, Jeremy the cousin was maybe trying just a little too hard I understand that he's a child actor so it's all right, and the aunt was just seemed not to care. The only exception is the uncle because when he was interrogated by Hotchner that was a pretty good intense scene.

Another fault was the pacing although the entire episode was intense and good but I thought it was a little bit rushed towards the end. I thought it took a little bit too long to pick up and spent a lot of time just showing how rude the family was to the agents who were trying to find their daughter which I didn't particularly enjoy watching.

Overall an episode with a few minor annoyances but was incredibly interesting and enjoyable to watch as the intensity was high the entire episode.

Lots of profiling stuff

Lots of things going on especially in terms of questioning and profiling. This kind of episode is why I love the show. And Hotch is at his best here. Prentiss too. The gore factor is lower in this one also. Great suspense. The whole thing is very well done. Maybe one of the most outstanding episodes of the series.

This is criminal minds at its finest. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, trying to predict what would happen next - and I was still, not expecting the ending.

One of my favorites.

Warning: Spoilers
This has always been one of my favorites. Missing child stories always generate good suspense. This one really ramps it up. Great guest star performances from Paula Malcomson as the mom,Suzanne Cryer as the evil aunt, and Alexander Gould as cousin Jeremy. The team are good as always but several stand out. Reid and Morgan when they find evidence her uncle molested Katie and in their interviews with Jeremy, and Prentiss when she just shreds the aunt, getting her to confess and reveal where she took Katie. Fun fact: Katie is played by a young pre Modern Family Ariel Winter.

This by far one of the best episodes of CM, all of the actors were wonderful!! If you want to judge this episodic series it doesn't hurt to start right here!! The parents of the missing little girl should have been nominated they were really really good!!!! All of the guest actors were above average and both of they"bad" guys were also great!! I realize it winds itself up in 43 minutes, I can admit that I shed a few tears the first time I saw this episode!! Paget is an upgrade just an opinion folks!! Of course I could watch Shermer read a phone book (sigh) seriously watch 7 Seconds one of the best.

Heart-breakingly believable Storyline, but unbelievable performance from FBI
williamsabbie7 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A 6 year old goes missing and the BAU have to determine who has taken her and where she could be. The whole of the mall is searched, from top to bottom, but nobody found the girl in a cupboard; they only find her once they realise who has taken her, and once she has stopped breathing. I found this part totally unbelievable.
