A Pure Musical and Visual Retreat with a loose screenplay.
pritambag3 July 2020
An offbeat love story between a Sufi Saint and mute Hindu girl which I was extremely excited to watch. From the plot till narration style everything was great. But what I didn't get was the magic of the screenplay. It may be because I am too obsessed with Mani Ratnam's work that I search his unique magic in every love story. So, the main highlight of the whole film were the performances especially the chemistry between the two lead characters Dev Mohan as a Sufi Saint with an infectious smile and non other than Aditi Rao Hydari as mute girl with a unique charm. The expressions delivered by her in few frames are just phenomenal, I remember last time I enjoyed the same charm was in Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai. Moreover, the visuals and locations in contrast with the addictive music are really great. Especially, the camera work of each and every minute details from the frame. Be it a drone shot of a Sufi dance or the close up shot of a longing girl. But the thing which could have been better was the Screenplay. If the Screenplay would have been a little better then this would have stand out from the rest of the Romantic Fairy Tales. Moreover, the idea, the attempt and the performances were great. You can give it a watch as a visual retreat.

Waste of time
pallupoorni4 July 2020
Hindu girl gets attracted to the Sufi saint mostly because of the call from the mosque. Absolutely no chemistry between the lead pair. The apparent love between the title characters is neither evident nor believable. The only saving grace is the good cinematography. Thankfully it was only about 2 hours long.

A subpar love story-dull and overstretched
nidhunmoviebuff3 July 2020
#MovieReview #SufiyumSujatayum #AmazonPrime #Malayalam #SpoilerFree

Sufiyum Sujatayum is a pretentious film that aspires to be a lot but falls desperately short. The narrative is stretched, tedious and downright boring in parts.

It isnt helped by the fact that the two leads, Dev Anand (who plays a Sufi) and Aditi Rao Hydari (who plays a mute village lass) are both one-dimensional in their performances.

Although Siddique, Manikandan Pattambi and Jayasurya shine in their limited roles, the viewer is never able to buy into the core love story and root for the unlikely pairing.

The film offers some soulful music and some fine visuals, but ends up being another disappointment from Prime's recent slew of direct-to-digital releases.

Not recommended.

MUSICAL Narration
mailaashi8 July 2020
Victory of Musical mood over a Poor story.

Bringing genuine sufi music has extremely influenced the movie narration

Failed religious bigoted attempt at a religious bigoted love story.
vishakvk-461365 July 2020
Gone are the days where stories were told from an unbiased point of view. The movie at times attempts at a take on "love jihad" but fails miserably because of a loose plot and weak acting. The pace of the movie is rather slow but the plot tends to get lost as the direction tends to bring about an unnecessary one sided religious focus with frequent religious references. The cinematography and visuals are rather good and some of the soulful sufi music in the movie does not suffice to save the movie and the viewers from their miserable plight. Weak attempt.

Absolute waste of time
sreekumards4 July 2020
I highly recommend not to watch this film. Still if you want to view click every 10 minutes on the timeline and finish the show in 15 minutes. I guarantee, you will not miss anything. I would like to give a special mention about the costume designer. Absolutely no logic. Wonder how Friday Film House made such a waste product.

Don't waste your time watching this amateur religion based bull****. Thought Jayasuriya was a dependable actor, but this is too boring and cliches are in every scene.

A Musical Romantic Tale
shejilali3 July 2020
This is not a fast paced romantic movie. This movie has its own pace. I personally liked the movie even though there are few scenes they streched a bit. I felt this movie would have been much better if movie time was 90 mins rather than 120 mins. If you are mass masala movie lover, then this might not be your cup of tea.

Musical romantic and peaceful movie. So sad to read reviews of religious discrimination
mektoubdc21 February 2021
Atidi Rao and Mahadev are very beautiful. I loved this movie. To watch this is very peaceful and it took me to an amazing romantic and painful moods. How painful and beautiful the love is...this movie does not hurt any religions but it brings a sort of spirituality.. I loved this movie much.

I wonder why some review writers are angry to this so beautiful movie because the hero is from a certain religious community please look at the actor name. Maha Dev and Jaysurya and especially Aditi Rao made their roles so perfect. The movie is really awesome and it points fingers to the barrior of religion against love. This movie is against all relgions. It does not promote any religion also. The problem of some review writers with negative comments is that they are addicted to the sedation of religions.

Walk through with Sufi& Sujatha.......
pobox-7754321 July 2020
Upper Hindu caste vs spiritual Muslim, Pure Love Vs Love-Jihad ....Keep away these factors from your sensitive mind before watching Sufi & Sujatha ... am sure you will enjoy this great musical journey. A journey between dream and reality ...... silence and rhythm of love. I guess majority of the middle class girls of age 25-35 living in this era could easily relate themselves to this fantasy voyage. Philosophically speaking, We have many Sujathas around, who are handicapped due to circumstances and countless Rajeevs as well who loves his wives unconditionally, however ignored. Sufi remains a fantasy from beginning till end, but rich with visuals and music. Being impaired doesn't stop any one from dreaming however ascertaining a fantasy of a speech impaired high caste Hindu woman towards a handsome Muslim guy is just not an accident rather a well recited social attention seeker. It looks like a conscious approach from writer towards limiting Sujatha's likings and dreams when it comes to fall in for Sufi, a handsome Muslim saint. Of course, Sufi whirls like a wind and carry you away to an imaginary world within few minutes of appearance, however failed to express his deep feelings for Sujatha (Sorry Mr. inexperienced director) as the story progress. Questions remaining are.. whether proselytism is a destiny or a decision? Does Living in present means sleeping with your husband without awakening from fantasy? If awakening ends of dream, how does a dream keep you alive for years ? I would suggest to watch and think about it... Music may keep you fastened to the seat though it is bit dragging in between.

A Must not-watch : Movie makers have to raise the bar.
vshanoj6 July 2020
Malayalam movies has always been above par as compared to any other Indian cinema in terms of quality, script, story telling, acting and direction. However offlate these amateur directors are hell bent on ruining the reputation.

Slow going love story with emotions
smileraki3 July 2020
Aditi Rao Hydari has scored full marks in her role that leads to positive side of the movie. Baground score very good. Screenplay was up to mark. Totally slowly going and one time watchable.

Nice movie with good BGM and visuals. True, a bit slow but if you have some patience, movies takes you to a different world of nice experience. Aditi gives a good performance. Sufi music adds value. Really enjoyable.....

Not worth the time - don't watch the movie. The movie deserves zero star
krishnan_pp7 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As one whatsapp status said, if the movie was released in theater, one would be running around to find the theater as the movie is so bad that either it will not be released in good theater or will be removed in next day.

The plot does not make any sense and has lot of loopholes. There are lot many questions that are left to audience to answer themselves like why the hell did the girl marry Jayasurya? How could she start family with Jayasurya and have kid even when she loved the other guy for last 9 years? The most craziest thing is why the hell did they come to Kerala for his cremation - the reason seams too silly? How did she get the prayer beads when she had given it to her father. The scene at cemetery is too dark that we can't see a thing !

Just give this move a miss and don't waste time watching it. Coming form a person who wasted time on this movie :(

Utter flop and waste of time.
dmaster-4016711 July 2020
Utter flop narration and it doesn't give satisfaction. Lots of mismatches in this movie. Lack of script not actually it's a bad script. This movie is an example for those kind of writers which they don't know how to express love through their movie. In this movie Sufism and Islam falsely narrated, except calling for prayer and prayer. Rest of the things like Makhbara, all are against islam. They thought sufism is like just wearing sufi dress and dance like sufi. No it's not. Deep love to creation to creator is one of the main thing in Sufism. In this movie we can clearly see it's just an infatuation of Sujatha only. Because of her crap infatuation her husband suffering a lot. Didn't get enough feeling from Sujatha and Sufi love story. We will feel more about Jaysurya's character. Moreover any Keralite actress can perform well than this Bollywood actress. Except lots of unsatisfied narration, Cinematography and songs are good.

Good one, if you want to fall asleep quickly.
AchuM1083 July 2020
Good one, if you want to fall asleep quickly. As usual in movies it is necessary that a Hindu girl is supposed to fall in love with a Muslim.
