Exclusive: In the wake of the $216M-plus global grossing success of Anyone But You, Sony is going to keep this romcom train going. We hear that TriStar Pictures has preemptively acquired Brenda Hsueh’s high concept romantic comedy Man’s Best Friend.
Temple Hill is also set to produce.
Plot is under wraps, and in early development, but we hear it’s in the spirit of the Danny DeVito directed, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner 1989 black comedy, The War of the Roses.
Hsueh will write and executive produce through her Shoe’s Off Productions banner alongside her partner Yvonne Cheng.
Hsueh co-wrote the Disney/Pixar animated sleeper, Elemental, which made close to a half billion dollars at the global box office and was nominated for an Oscar in the Animated Feature category. She also consulted for Domee Shi, the director of Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red.

The Streaming Era began with a promise of nurturing shows without fear of ratings pressure and quick cancellations. Of course, that was a lark. Soon enough, the streamers began slashing shows as quickly and brutally as any Nielsen-obsessed broadcaster, and they were all flooded with same complaint: “The streamers just cancel everything! Nothing gets more than a season anymore!”
How true is that really? After all, the streamers are looking for hit shows, just like traditional networks. If a show gets high viewership relative to the cost of producing it, it gets renewed. Otherwise, it is canceled. That is how it has worked since the days of black-and-white TV.
To get to the heart of the matter, Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+) and Luminate collaborated on a data exploration to determine how often the leading U.S.-based streaming and linear programmers have canceled series TV series over the past three years.

Apple is poised to say farewell to Physical.
The iPhone maker and streamer on Wednesday announced that its Rose Byrne-led series from creator Annie Weisman will conclude with its upcoming third season. The final 10 episodes of the 1980s-set aerobics dramedy will debut Aug. 2.
“We are so grateful to Apple, Tomorrow Studios, and all our creative collaborators for the chance to bring Sheila to life in all her gritty glory,” said star and executive producer Byrne and creator, writer and executive producer Weisman in a statement announcing the news. “With this final season, Sheila’s three-act saga of rebellion, recovery, and redemption comes to the satisfying conclusion that she and her fans so richly deserve. A day after Fair Play sold to Netflix in a Sundance deal pegged in the 20 million range, another 20 million deal has come together at the annual film festival. Apple has picked up the worldwide rights to Flora and Son, John Carney’s musical ode to motherhood that features a breakthrough performance by Eve Hewson. Multiple sources say the deal landed at just over 20 million. (Although one source says comes in at just under 20 million.)
The feel-good charmer, steeped in Irish humor and flavor, premiered Sunday in front of an audience that was laughing, cheering and wiping away tears, all culminating with a standing ovation. Hewson anchors Flora, playing a single mother juggling work and a challenging co-parenting relationship with her ex. In the Dublin-set feature about how music can re-energize life, she connects with her troubled teenaged son (Orén Kinlan) through a discarded guitar and also forms a bond with her online music teacher,...

Jason Momoa’s upcoming historical epic limited series “Chief of War” at Apple has cast Luciane Buchanan, Variety has learned exclusively.
Buchanan will now star in the nine-episode series opposite Momoa and Temuera Morrison. It was first reported as being in the works at Apple back in April. Per the official logline, the series “follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view.”
Buchanan will play Ka’ahumanu, described as “intelligent and progressive in thought. Ka’ahumanu is curious about the larger world beyond her home islands.”
Buchanan was born in New Zealand and is of Tongan descent. She is not entirely new to Apple audiences, as she previously appeared in the series “Mr. Corman” opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt. She is known for her roles in shows like “The New Legends of Monkey,” “Filthy Rich,” “The Blue Rose,” and the Netflix series “Sweet Tooth.

Tessa Thompson (Westworld) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Super Pumped) are attached to star in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which the Grammy-winning musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus — otherwise known as Steven Ellison — will direct as his sophomore feature, as we first reported in January. Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has since then come aboard to exec produce the pic, which its financier XYZ Films will rep for worldwide sales at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.
While at TIFF to meet with key buyers for Ash, Flying Lotus will appear in support of his segment of V/H/S/99, which is having its world premiere in the Midnight section of the festival.
The new film, for which the multi-hyphenate will also compose an original score, watches as a woman (Thompson) wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed, and must then decide if she can trust...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has joined the Peacock series “Poker Face,” the mystery drama starring Natasha Lyonne that was created by Rian Johnson.
Plot details for the series are being kept largely under wraps, though sources say the show will follow a procedural format and see Lyonne’s character working to solve different murders in each episode. Details on the character Gordon-Levitt will play, including how many episodes he will appear in, are also under wraps.
“Poker Face” received a 10-episode order at Peacock in March 2021. Gordon-Levitt is the first confirmed cast member of the series besides Lyonne. It also marks a reunion for Gordon-Levitt and Johnson, who worked together on Johnson’s feature directorial debut “Brick.” The neo-noir film debuted in 2005 at the Sundance Film Festival with Gordon-Levitt in the lead role. Gordon-Levitt has had a role in each of Johnson’s projects since, including starring in the film “Looper” that Johnson wrote and directed.

Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to star together in “White Night,” a psychological thriller inspired by the true story of the mass murder-suicide in the Jonestown cult in 1978.
Anne Sewitsky (“A Very British Scandal”) is directing the film that will star Gordon-Levitt as Jim Jones, the Christian socialist preacher, self-proclaimed God and cult leader, and Moretz as Deborah Layton, a woman who rose through the ranks of the cult and tried to expose Jones before it was too late.
“White Night” is based on Layton’s memoir “Seductive Poison,” and it details how on November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, one of the largest on record. The massacre occurred at the Jonestown settlement that Jones established in Guyana in 1974, an extension of his San Francisco-based cult.
William Wheeler wrote the script based on Layton’s memoir.
