Kiefer Sutherland: Jack Bauer
Quotes
-
Chloe : I'm glad you're with us.
Jack Bauer : I'm not with anyone until someone starts answering some questions.
[turns to Tony]
Jack Bauer : Let's start with you. Why the hell aren't you dead?
-
[about Jack returning to the United States after his stint in Sangala]
David Emerson : Why'd you come back?
Jack Bauer : Wanted to know what it was like to walk into a propeller.
David Emerson : [unamused] That's funny.
-
Chloe : I'm glad you're with us.
Jack Bauer : I'm not with anybody until someone starts answering questions.
[turns to Tony]
Jack Bauer : Might as well start with you. Why are you not dead?
-
Tony Almeida : I was "dead" Jack, for almost ten minutes: or so I was told
Jack Bauer : [Sternly] by who?
Chloe : [while showing him on a computer monitor] by him
Tony Almeida : His name is David Emerson I don't know who he paid off at CTU but it was his people that injected my body with a hypodermic needle compound. It was able to revive me
Jack Bauer : Who is he? And what does he want?
Tony Almeida : He's an independent contractor: enlists ex-military and intelligence operatives, and "jobs" them out to clients. Apparently, I fit the "profile"
Jack Bauer : [Angrily] what "profile?"
Tony Almeida : Former employees with grievances against the federal government. Emerson has been "keeping" tabs" on me since I left CTU. After Michelle was killed, he figured I'd make a good recruit
Jack Bauer : And everyone else thinking you're dead? So much the better
Tony Almeida : 'Yeah
Jack Bauer : [Walks closer to Tony] since then you've been working undercover to expose his operation?
Tony Almeida : No Jack
Jack Bauer : What?
Tony Almeida : I was really working for him. I was angry, I hated the federal government for what it took from me. I ran Emerson's "crew" for more than three years and I did some pretty bad things
Jack Bauer : What made you turn against them?
Tony Almeida : The CIP device, Emerson had my "crew" stealing components to breach the firewall. I knew what that meant: innocent Americans would die and I didn't "sign up" for that
Jack Bauer : [Raises his voice] damn it Tony, why didn't you call the authorities?
Bill Buchanan : He couldn't Jack
Jack Bauer : [Yells] why not?
Bill Buchanan : He found out Emerson's client was Dubaku
Jack Bauer : [to Tony] that's who you believe that has agents inside the government
Bill Buchanan : [Responds for Tony] the Juma regime controls Sangala's vast diamond wealth. Dubaku hasn't been "shy" about "throwing" it around
Jack Bauer : How widespread is the corruption?
Bill Buchanan : Pervasive: that's why Tony came to me. We don't know how far or high up this "thing" went
Tony Almeida : Dubaku's the key to this "thing" Jack. If we're going to "uncover" the "conspiracy", we have to get to him before he leaves the US. That's why I have to get back "under" as soon as possible, there's a new job in the pipeline for me and my "crew." I don't have all the details but I do know it'll get me in the same room as Dubaku himself
Bill Buchanan : The "challenge" is going to be "re-installing" Tony with Emerson: we have to assume Emerson knew Tony was in FBI custody and somehow managed to escape
Jack Bauer : Emerson's going to think Tony made a deal with the US Attorney
Bill Buchanan : That's right
Jack Bauer : I can help you with this
Bill Buchanan : [Nods] yes you can
Jack Bauer : Outside the three of you, who else is involved in this operation?
Chloe : It's just us: this is it
Jack Bauer : [to Bill] please tell me you have some "proof" of this "conspiracy" exists?
Bill Buchanan : Yes we do but only at its lowest level. At this point, we've just begun to "scratch the surface"
Jack Bauer : [after thinking it over] ok I'll work with you but only because right now you are the only people that I trust. You give me one reason to question that and I swear I will turn you in you understand?
-
Jack Bauer : Tell me about Emerson?
Tony Almeida : His British: former SAS, urban warfare, snipping, closed quarter combat, saw action in Beirut, Mogadishu
Jack Bauer : So he's good?
Tony Almeida : Extremely. His not some "whack job" or "ideolog." His about two things: money and "personal loyalty"
Jack Bauer : It sounds like you admire him?
Tony Almeida : He treated me like a brother when I thought I had nobody else
Jack Bauer : Is this going to be a problem?
Tony Almeida : No, I know his on the wrong side of "this", I'll do what has to be done
-
David Emerson : [Extends his hand for Jack to shake it] no hard feelings
Jack Bauer : [Shakes his hand] forget it
David Emerson : We have to be careful in our profession, I'm sure you understand
Jack Bauer : Yeah
David Emerson : We all know the drill: disagreements are fine but when a decision is made, fall in or you're gone
Jack Bauer : I know a lot of guys who say that, it's good to know you mean it
David Emerson : Before you were subpoenaed, you traveled the world, place to place for more than a year. Why? What were you looking for?
Jack Bauer : Doesn't really matter: whatever it was, I didn't find it
David Emerson : You must've known what was waiting, why'd you come back?
Jack Bauer : [Jokingly] I wanted to know what it was like to walk into a propeller
David Emerson : It's funny but no, really... why?
Jack Bauer : This my home
David Emerson : That doesn't explain why you turned yourself in to the Justice Department
Jack Bauer : Tony, said you were in Beirut and Mogadishu?
David Emerson : And Afghanistan: two tours, went back a third time as a private contractor
Jack Bauer : "Be polite, professional, and have a plan to kill everyone you meet" right?
David Emerson : Pretty much
Jack Bauer : That's the question, isn't it? What are the rules of engagement? And where the crimes begin? You want to know why I came back? That's why
David Emerson : I'm not sure I follow
Jack Bauer : I just got tired of talking to myself. You see, I actually believed everything I did was "right." That's why I wanted to start a "dialog", come clean, set the record straight
David Emerson : First mistake?
Jack Bauer : So I found out
David Emerson : I don't know of someone who hasn't been to "the edge", and looked over, I could never understand
Jack Bauer : Yeah
David Emerson : It's good to have you on board
