Layla M, the Dutch film entry for Academy Award Nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film Category is directed by Mijke de Jong and co-written by Mijke and her husband Jan Eilander. It features a compelling young Moroccan actress, (Nora El Koussour) who brings fire and passion to her role as an integrated 18 year old Dutch-Moroccan in Amsterdam who becomes increasingly radicalized along with her new husband, Abdel played by Ilias Addab.

In 1997 there came a little movie called Trainspotting, adapted by director Danny Boyle and scenarist John Hodge from Scottish writer Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name. It was the loose-limbed story of a group of childhood friends spinning their collective wheels in the working-class gloom of Edinburgh, Scotland, scheming schemes, committing petty crimes, arguing the merits of Sean Connery (and, by extension, Scotland) and trying to sustain those decaying friendships all while rotating in and out of a seemingly hopeless cycle of heroin addiction, indulgence and withdrawal. For me, Trainspotting’s exuberant, hyperkinetic style decorated a somewhat sensationalistic attitude toward tragedy, on a sociopolitical as well as personal scale, and its scabrous energy always seemed too much at odds with the overwhelming lethargy which follows the orgasmic relief of a desperately needed hit. (I guess I’m more of a Panic in Needle Park kind of guy.)
But what do I know?...

Ain’t nothing like a bit of good old fashioned teen rebellion. In the ‘annoying your parents’ stakes, you can’t beat cool classics like dyeing your hair a weird colour, or getting a tattoo, or listening to really angry punk music, or staying out past curfew, or declaring international jihad on corrupt imperialist kuffar pigdogs or …wait, that last one’s not cool at all.
Yet, this is the path that pissed off Dutch teenager Layla (Nora El Koussour) walks in Mijke de Jong’s Layla M, a smart and timely film about radicalization. We’re introduced to Layla as she angrily disputes a decision in a local soccer game, obviously relishing the conflict. Soon after we see a snapshot of the casual racism she’s apparently expected to tolerate everyday.

Exclusive: Acquisitions by Svod giant include Ivona Juka’s You Carry Me.
On the eve of Cannes, Pim van Collem’s Amsterdam-based sales outfit Dutch Features Global Entertainment has signed an eye-catching deal with Netflix for four of its titles.

There was a time when two veteran straight actors such as John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, taking on the roles of a gay couple and their subsequent travails at married life would have been the tabloid equivalent of shock and awe. It still might raise some eyebrows, but Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is a testimony to societal progress in terms of storytelling. Now it will face the box office as the Specialty title platforms this weekend via Sony Classics. A real-life gay marriage takes the spotlight this weekend courtesy of Starz Digital doc To Be Takei about the multi-faceted actor/activist and social media talent who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in TV’s original Star Trek. It will be joined by Millennium Entertainment’s Are You Here with Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler which will open day and date by Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner.

Fifty years ago (on Feb. 7, 1964, to be precise), the Beatles came to America with a sound so blissful and spangly and new that it would have seemed — still seems — counterintuitive to think how much that sound was influenced by America. The four magical mop tops seemed to relish our rock & roll even more than we did (though, of course, they gave it their own incandescent spin). Mind you, I’m not comparing Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, the two brilliantly funny quipster cynics who portray themselves going on a culinary road adventure in The Trip to Italy, to the Beatles...

Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. The long-awaited (and long-covered) film Frankenstein's Army is currently touring film festivals worldwide. This month it was shown at the Imagine Festival in Amsterdam and Tribeca in New York, and it had its World Premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, back in January. Last year I visited the set in the Czech Republic and was very much taken with what I saw. Therefore it was with great anticipation that I awaited the press premiere. After that, and literally a few hours before the official world premiere, I was able to get a few minutes with director Richard Raaphorst, who was at that time excited enough to walk on the ceiling... Twitch: First of all, thank you for taking the time to talk with me,...

I feel as if we've been talking about Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army for like ages. Still, with a little luck and a shooting schedule that's to begin in 2012 maybe we'll actually see it! In any event ... New art! Dig it!
Back in February it was announced that the flick would be financed by Mpi Media Group, La-based Xyz Films and Pellicola of Amsterdam.
Production is set to begin this spring in Prague and Amsterdam, and would be completed by late fall.

That was the week in which Roland Emmerich applied his delicate style to the Bard and our writers fessed up to their favourite films
The big story
Roland Emmerich likes to destroy things. We in the film world know this: we've watched him blow the planet up for years. Let's face it, it's why we love him. But the theatre world is less familiar with his style, and this week they have been traumatised by the unleashing of his new film Anonymous, with which, in characteristic fashion, Emmerich attempts to completely obliterate the reputation of William Shakespeare.
Arguably the most inspired response to the German director's waste-laying ways came from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who this week took to graffitting road signs to make their point. A very sophisticated one, we should point out - if Shakespeare was "anonymous", see, then he doesn't exist. Emmerich is no doubt pulling together...

Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly in Cyrus
Photo: Fox Searchlight Pictures My first time watching Cyrus was following a trip that started in Nice, went through Amsterdam and finally found my feet on American soil in Seattle 26-hours later. Three hours after landing I was in a movie theater -- not exactly ideal conditions. However, I came out liking the film, but felt a second viewing was in order, if only to flesh out my opinion, a decision I'm glad I made. As it turns out, I still liked Cyrus the second time around, just not as much as I did originally, and for very specific reasons.
Sold as a comedy, Cyrus centers on John (John C. Reilly), a desperate man who's been divorced from his wife Jamie (Catherine Keener) for seven years and can't seem to pick up the pieces. The two remain friends, but his feelings haven't slowed,...

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

Fox has announced that it will broadcast the two-hour sci-fi pilot for Virtuality, co-created by Battlestar Galactica majordomo Ronald D. Moore, in its June 26 Friday timeslot...the scheduling bone yard where projects have been essentially sent to die for...oh, the past five decades or so now.
The move fortifies previous reports that the Vancouver-filmed pilot will not net a series after all. It was not mentioned during Fox's 2009-2010 schedule upfronts last month.
Of course, if the pilot does astounding numbers, then everything we've said above will go out the window faster than a kitty at a canine convention—but we're not holding our breath. They would have to be pretty astounding.
