This episode provides the viewer with where subsequent episodes lead. Particularly as concerns Melinda's mother. It in itself is not that all important, but elements of it lead eventually to an enormous revelation in regard to Melinda and her father. When placed in the context of previous and future shows, admiration of the script writers is inevitable.

3rd season opener

Not a particularly august start for GH's third season, "The Underneath" has Melinda dealing with a long-dead ghost who has mistaken her for someone else, possibly the ghost's daughter. Melinda also gets to meet another another one of those boring "We're legion and we're out to get you" specters, this one haunting a public records storage room where Melinda is researching the long-dead ghost's history. Martin Donovan is glimpsed briefly as Melinda's always-helpful dead dad, and Anne Archer is on hand once again as Melinda's less-than-helpful mom. Jay Mohr is back as the comic-relief professor of the occult who occasionally helps Melinda, and has a nice if abbreviated bit with her while dining at a sidewalk café.
