If one is in the mood for an indie thriller that gives off the vibe of a B-movie, then one might consider watching Roadkill, which is the new film by Warren Fast. The story is pretty simple, but Fast tries very hard to lend the film some thematic depth, which just isn’t possible with the kind of story he is trying to tell. For whatever it’s worth, the movie is unintentionally funny in a lot of places, and you can have a good time just admiring the effort the crew must have put into making this film. Although I must say that if the budget was a little better, this could have looked way better than it does. There is no intent to save on shoe leather in the film, which makes this drag a little more than it should have.

Roadkill opens with a boy (Brody Barcellona; When Sharks Attack) getting some food from a refrigerator and sharing it with a cute dog. That doesn’t sit well with his mother who chases the boy back to the dog house where he lives telling him “That’s gonna cost you”. In the morning we see just what it cost as he wakes to his mother giggling over the dog with several butcher knives sticking out of it.
The film moves forward to the summer of 1983 and the boy has grown and is now a drifter referred to in the credits as The Hitchhiker. He crosses paths with The Driver, a young woman with a big muscle car who offers him a ride in return for directions...

On a highway in rural Australia, Connor Shelby lies on top of his seemingly broken-down car while speaking with his girlfriend on the phone. As he promises they will escape their residence by the end of the month, Connor ends the call when he spots an oncoming car. Once a family arrives to offer help, it becomes apparent this is a trap to lure unsuspecting victims into a robbery, as this effectively shot opening offers an understanding of the protagonist and the lengths he is willing to take.
While unaware of how her beloved earns money, Lucy (Sarah Milde) has an inkling that he is being untruthful about working down the mines. All she asks is that he does not lie to her, yet she does not anticipate his determination to not die in Australia.

This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.
This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

“She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives,” Lewis wrote. “She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”
McCrory played Aunt Polly Gray in “Peaky Blinders” between 2013-2019, and she also starred as Narcissa Malfoy, Draco Malfoy’s mother, in the “Harry Potter” franchise, appearing in three films in the series.
Some of her other credits include “The Queen,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Hugo,” “Skyfall” and on TV the series “Fearless,” “Quiz,” “Roadkill” and most recently “His Dark Materials.”

Richard Sharp, the incoming chair of the BBC, believes that the U.K. public service broadcaster’s work culture needs a serious revamp.
Sharp, a former investment banker with one prior tilt at the org’s top job several years ago, was confirmed last week as the government’s preferred candidate for the job.
Sharp’s last hurdle before he can take up the position was to appear at a pre-appointment hearing conducted by the U.K. parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee, which he did on Thursday.
During a questioning process that lasted nearly two hours, Sharp said his priority was to tackle impartiality issues that the BBC faces.
“Impartiality is clearly the biggest issue,” Sharp told the committee. “Clearly some of the problems it had recently are rather terrible and reflect a culture that needs to be rebuilt so everybody [who] works at the BBC feels proud and happy to work there.

Richard Sharp, the millionaire former banker on the cusp of being appointed as the BBC’s next chair, has used his first public appearance to praise the work of the British broadcaster and its role on the world stage — but he couldn’t help having a dig at recent Hugh Laurie series Roadkill.
Sharp was announced as the UK government’s preferred candidate for the £160,000-a-year role last week, and we got our first sighter of the soon-to-be UK broadcasting figurehead when he was grilled today by lawmakers who sit on Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
In good news for the BBC, Sharp — who must act as both cheerleader and antagonist of the BBC’s operations — said he is in favor of the license fee (calling it the “least worst [funding] mode”) and against government plans to decriminalize non-payment of the household levy, which the BBC has said...

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.
Amazon’s original movies in December are just as intriguing. Riz Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing in Sound of Metal on Dec. 4. Rachel Brosnahan stars as a mother...

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. In the new PBS series “Roadkill,” Hugh Laurie plays Peter Laurence, a conservative (both with a big and small ‘c’) who fights scandal after scandal to try and remain near the top of the greasy political pole.
There have been a handful of recent series depicting right-wing demagogues (think “The Comey Rule” in the U.S. and “Years and Years” across the pond), but Peter Laurence isn’t one of those.
Instead, “Roadkill” focuses on the kind of conservatism that has been in power in the U.K. for the better part of the last 50 years, according to creator David Hare.
“The last six governments in Britain have been Conservative. England is a conservative country, we vote in Conservatives whenever we can, that’s our default position. Yet it’s extraordinary how little fiction there is about them, it’s extraordinary how almost nobody studies them seriously,” Hare says.

We’ve been conditioned — mostly thanks to corruption, greed and a steady abuse of power — to mistrust politicians. For many, skepticism is such a deep-rooted emotion when it comes to the government, even being too trustworthy becomes suspicious. But you need not worry, that isn’t that case for Hugh Laurie’s Peter Laurence, the center of PBS Masterpiece’s saucy political miniseries “Roadkill.” Go ahead and bank on those instincts. What begins as a straightforward story unravels into an interconnected evening soap, better paired with gin than tea and crumpets.
When introduced, well-known political figure Laurence has just won a libel lawsuit. A smug grin from ear to ear, he’s off to discuss it with Mick the Mouth on “Alltalk,” a trashy radio show on which he appears weekly. It seems par for the course these days that a once guarded political figure could go off the rails...

She is set to reprise her role as the prime minister in a new series of the hit Scandi drama, but the actor is just as excited to share the limelight in David Hare’s new BBC thriller, Roadkill
Sidse Babett Knudsen had an ulterior motive for joining the cast of BBC One’s new political thriller Roadkill, playing the mistress of Hugh Laurie’s ambitious Conservative minister. Sure, she is a fan of Roadkill’s writer, David Hare (whom she describes as “one of the gods”); in her theatre group days, she would regularly make the trip from Copenhagen to London to see his plays at the Royal Court. But that’s far from the whole story. “One of my favourite shows of all time is Veep, and Selina Meyer’s obsession with Hugh Laurie’s character is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen,” she says.
