Despite the fact that J-horror is long since dead, for the most part, the genre was always one of the most predominant ones in S/Se Asian, and particularly in the Asean countries, where horror was always quite popular. Recently, S. Korean genre cinema also seems to have made a turn towards the category, probably instigated by the huge success of “Train to Busan“, the sequel of which is also included in the list. Lastly, the trend that started in Indonesia with Joko Anwar‘s remake of “Satan’s Slaves” continued this year, with Kimo Staboel‘s “Queen of Black Magic” while the other member of Mo Brothers, Timo Tjahjanto also presented in an effort in the genre.

The subject of the cursed movie or film in horror cinema is a rather played out and frequent trope in modern cinema, with everything from “Cigarette Burns,” “Porno” and “Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made” to name a few of the films utilizing the concept. This lack of originality extends to the rest of director Kim Jin-won’s competently-made if overall generic Amjeon, now available on Shudder.
Working on her thesis project in film school, Mi-jung (Seo Ye-ji) decides to transfer the focus onto a new horror film when one of her classmates informs her about a cursed movie shot by a legacy student. Informed about what happened to the original director and crew that shot the movie, she and her friend Joon-seo (Ji Yoon-ho) begin to investigate the legacy of the tape and discover the truth involving what happened to Jae-hyun (Jin Seon-kyu), the director and...

With regular movie theaters still closed for the time being, digital releases have been giving us movie fans a much-needed respite these last few months, and we’ve got even more new films to look forward to get us through the next few weeks.
June’s Digital and VOD releases kick off on the 4th, with Shudder's streaming debut of the stellar documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street, and the very next day, things really pick up with several more films hitting a variety of platforms, including Shirley, Becky, The Deeper You Dig, and Dinner Party.
The following week we have a few more titles hitting streaming, including the documentary You Don’t Nomi, which is centered on the cult film Showgirls, which is being released on the 9th, and Warning: Do Not Play making its way to Shudder on the 11th. Hey. Did you know it's almost June? I know right? What the hell? Well, however long whatever this is keeps going on the good folks at Shudder are here to help with a good dose of horror delights this coming month. The big four titles next month include the doc Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, Korean horror flick Warning: Do Not Play, horror anthology Scare Package and SXSW Midnighter title Yummy. Pride month happens in June and though celebrations around the World may be a wee bit subdued this year there is still lots of queer horror cinema to celebrate, including one of my favorites from the other year, Knife + Heart. Shudder is also hosting the short films from the Ehteria Film Festival,...

South Korea and Japan are embroiled in a trade war that has led to a boycott of Japanese goods and services, but will it affect business at the Asian Film Market which opens today in Busan?

“Battle of Jangsari,” a Korean war action film with a cast that includes Megan Fox and Choi Min-ho of K-pop boy band SHINee, will be distributed in North America by WellGo USA. The film screened privately for buyers during the Toronto film festival.
WellGo plans to release “Jangsari” on Oct. 4, just over a week after it Korean theatrical outing, and will be targeting Asian-American and mainstream audiences. “We bought ‘Jangsari’ on promo alone, because of its compelling and true story. Also having Megan Fox in a role, we’ll hopefully bring in crossover audiences in Us and Canada,” said WellGo president Doris Pfardrescher in a statement. Fox plays a war correspondent.
A previous war action film “Operation Chromite,” from the same stable of production house Taewon Entertainment and sales house Finecut, grossed $1.02 million in the U.S. That film featured Liam Neeson.
