A Very Lame, Tame Horror Piece
jpatd1 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I like horror films, even formulaic ones but this one was a stretch. It's not completely awful, there are aspects which are interesting and, intentional or otherwise, there are some funny parts too.

Take a film like Saw - a series of set pieces, mix in a little slice of Hostel which had a more sadistically pessimistic view of people – that given a chance we'd love to mangle each other or pay to see it. However, this film isn't as dark, gruesome or scary as those.

It reminds me of The Tournament, or maybe one of the Cube sequels. The CG in all three is a reality check. The fake guns shoot harmless sparks, the girl grabs her cut cheek in the wrong place, and the list goes on. Also, the lighting seems to be too bright – it's just not scary.

With all of the reminders we're given about Elimination's genre, I'm still not buying it.

The opening seemed promising with a funny driver shouting quaint nonsense but when you hear the line about this being the first acting audition, you'll realise that this is going to be pretty rough around the edges.

Costumes stood out scary at times and often fairly ridiculous. The film will make you smile a few times, the comments about the sweatshirt, the 'hand terror' in which a girl and some onlookers are randomly paralysed with fear, as well as some bad star trek and poop jokes.

Some kudos for the 'executive producer' effects which were creepy and voice acted well.

About halfway through the film some interesting character turns start panning out which I thought were more successful. It's nothing unpredictable though.

There is an outrageous Dark City zoom moment but some of the characters do get a little interesting. The acting helped. Some good stunt work too, and lots of nudity, those actors were trying.

Mostly misses. See it if you're bored.

Wow I want my time back!
artyom_aa31 January 2012
I recommend listening to me and other reviewers here. This movie was a total waste of time. To be honest, some parts of it made me laugh (nudity scenes) They were completely unnecessary and funny because it was intentional. The girls were hot but you know the movie is a waste of time. It is very random and not scary at all. Just like what I said parts of it were funny. The effects were a joke! oh yes, and what grabbed my attention is the shitty acting of some of the characters, others did well but some like the burning girl and the bitchy girlfriend were a joke and I wont even put them on a youtube video. There isn't much to say anymore about this movie other than it was very cheap and dirty, the girls were losing their clothes more than blood haha and for some reason the contestants never attempted to kill the amazon woman. So in other words, no logic. No action. No suspense. No mystery.

Very bad film....
jameszxcvbn7 June 2011
The poster looked promising and since I'm a fan of a "trap" movie myself, I decided to watch this.

As the movie starts, I already knew that the film itself will be at its poor quality. The lighting was too bright and the "audition" thing was a bad start up. The actors did the worst acting I've ever seen in a 'horror movie'. We feel no sympathy for any characters and the director tried to evoke the audience by showing some nudity in the intro.

What's with the laser guns, actors who kill people (amazon girl and the fat clown), worthless CG for the traps, random girl trapped in this trap involving fire... All didn't work at all. It came to a point where I was curious of what the movie was actually about.

What was with the amazon girl suddenly revealing herself as an average job seeker thirsty for money?...

What audition did these guys expect ? What's with the old man randomly changing voice in the ending ?

One word "Pathetic"
shams-aamer30 May 2011
I can not seem to comprehend why movies like these are allowed to hit the screens. Senseless violence, needless nudity and just plain simple lame CG. The story itself is well, just okay; a bad copy of the SAW series, but the movie itself is completely pathetic. I actually slept half way in the movie, a complete waste of time. The cast did a fair job acting their characters but the way the whole thing unfold is just simply D GRADE if there is one; and if there isn't well, now there is one :)

A word of advise, save a few brain cells watch something else...I feel dumb already....

bad

Worst movie I've ever watched! Acting is very bad, although some actresses are hot. I just can't believe that professional actors can act that awful. I mean who chose those people, were they just picked up from street?!? Story is OK, but very similar to 'saw' with really poor effects. I had a feeling that this movie is some kind of parody to saw. Even worst parodies are better than this. Some amateur could've film a better movie than this. Worst spent hour and a half of my life. I don't know why I didn't turn it off when I realized who bad it is, probably hoped that it will get better, but it didn't so don't waste your time on this!!

One of the 5 worst movies I have ever seen
Vert6628 July 2011
This movie must have been very low budget, fire effects superimposed over actors, and blood splatter was purple, not red, in one scene.

It was not scary in the slightest, and effects were hilariously terrible to this viewer.

The premise was not believable, and actors in this movie, should not list this on their resumes, this looked like a college class project.

It is an accidental comedy... that pretty much sums it up.

This movie makes all the Saw, Friday the 13ths, Halloween, ...of the Dead, and Nightmare on Elm Streets look like masterpieces.

Not recommended for any one, unless you love really horrible movies.

Jigsaw
kosmasp7 June 2011
Well that is the title the movie got in Germany ... guess why? If you can't guess then I suppose you haven't seen one of the biggest movie franchises of the last few years. The funny fact there is, that you cannot even really compare those movies. Funny if you can laugh at bad horror, combined with bad acting and a really weak script. And that is putting it mildly.

If you are into the nudity thing, there are other movies to enjoy then this. If you are into splatter, again other movies to prefer. Emotion almost reaches zero degrees (in a bad way). Movies like these give horror a bad rep. I hope the makers can get their "stuff" together and do a better job, if they get another opportunity.

I Liked The Movie
sportsbros8081 May 2013
Some of these reviews are way too harsh. I'm not sure what they expected, it's a low budget horror film, not Citizen Kane. But even though it doesn't have a big budget it is still a well-made film. They did the best with what they had.

As for the comparisons to the SAW franchise, sure, I can see that. But all films in a certain genre usually borrow from other films in that genre. Some reviewers say the plot is not believable. Are you telling me that the plot of SAW is believable?

There is some gratuitous nudity but when did that become a bad thing? I will have you look at some horror movies from the 80's and you will see an incredible amount of sex and nudity.

I'm still not sure what some of these reviewers are complaining about. I'm sorry that the Cohen brothers don't make horror films, but until then we are going to have to make do with what we have.

Go take a look at the original The Evil Dead. That was a very low budget film that had some questionable special effects and acting. But it's a cult classic. I'm not saying that Elimination will become a classic but I think everyone is looking at this film all wrong.

The film is good for what it is; a small budget, somewhat campy horror film. It is the kind of film you can just sit back and enjoy for what it is.

Reviews have been too harsh...
scootmandutoo3 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I am someone who tends to be fairly critical of badly-made, low-budget horror movies. There are certainly enough clunkers out there. Yet, I did not think "Elimination" was all that bad. In fact, at times it was very entertaining.

I was especially impressed the way director Vargas set up his shots. There were some very inventive visual elements. Then I checked his filmography and noticed his background in special effects. There is a definite sense of style and craft here.

I think what many people might have a problem with is the brazenly gratuitous nudity A couple of female characters, before meeting their demise, have their clothes absurdly pulled off, exposing their breasts, for no other reason then...well....exposing their breasts. And yet, I thought that was hilarious self-parody in itself. It was just too brazen in a relatively competent screenplay to be anything but a commentary on the gratuitous nudity one often sees in b-grade slasher pics. It was so blatant it had almost an element of 'camp' to it. The only surprising thing is that the director did not have his actors having sex with one another. To be frank, they had no time for it.

I found the film silly but occasionally fun, with a few pretty damn good performances, especially Meredith Grau as the evil Emily. The actors in this flick were uneven, but the good ones really shined.

Far better than I thought, it certainly takes the Hostel/Saw template into a new arena.

SAW Copycat, but, Entertaining!
rajivness25 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I personally love 'Survival' Genre movies where a group of People are in a situation which they don't understand and are coping somehow to survive.

Movie Premise: A group of wannabe actors go for a mysterious audition for a TV reality show only to discover that they're fighting to survive - having to survive grueling challenges and each other!

There is nothing original about this low budget flick. The theme is greatly borrowed/inspired from the SAW franchise with the ominous Jigsaw like character welcoming people along with bizarre ways of being killed.

The film has your usual stereo-types: The mean bitch, the scared girl (think hapless victim), the jock, the hot girl, nice guy and a few random characters thrown in.

They could have made the actors more diverse to broaden the appeal of the movie - like have African American, Asian (Japanese/Chinese), Indian, European (British, Scottish, French, German). But all and all, I found the movie quite entertaining - given its very simple premise and relatable characters.

I don't know why the other reviewers have been so harsh on this movie. I've seen Big Budget Hollywood movies do far worse - to the extent of inducing acute boredom.

6/10.
