Family Road Trip
Beginthebeguine23 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
From Sandy, Utah to Winter Quarters in Omaha, Nebraska. On to Carthage Jail in Illinois and Isaac Morley's farm in Kirtland. Ohio and finally Palmyra, New York to the Hill Cumorah Pageant in July 2008. A long road trip with several stops along the way and a good chance to tie up some lose ends. Nicky's use of Birth Control pills, Bill's use of Viagra, Margene's mother's ashes,Ben's crush on Margene, and Sarah's pregnancy. The best however is Bill's questioning of his faith. It begins with him not defending polygamy to an LDS member in Carthage jail, continues when he is confronted by a Baptist Minister by the Native American Riverboat and ends as he kneels at Hill Cumorah after his family leaves him to attend the pageant and he confesses that he can not find his faith. No wonder, anyone would lose their faith on a long, family trip like this one. I'm not LDS, but I went to the Pageant in 1978 and I thought it was wonderful, so pack up your bags next July take I 90 to exit 43, then highway 21 for two miles to Palmyra, New York for a very interesting evening. I will stay tune to see if Bill realizes that the Baptist Minister may have had some validity to his statements about Joseph Smith Jr. One more thing; toward the end, when Bill & co. are burying this family time capsule on Hill Cumorah I though it would have been funny had he uncovered the "Golden Plates" that Joseph returned to the Angel Moroni. In all fairness though, any anti Mormon statements made during the shows should be weighed against producer Tom Hanks hatred of the LDS Faith. He has really pulled out the stops this year since they (among many people) opposed him in the Gay Marriage issue in California. Every show seems to have some attack on their philosophy and belief system. I know a lot of Mormons and besides the few in Idaho I have come across, they seem like a likable sort and nothing like the people in the show.
