Seriously, do heed the lower reviews.
FreakyDarling27 April 2021
I took the word of someone on just going into this movie not knowing what it was about. Welp... I dislike this movie very much. Not to say that the acting wasn't good. They hit their marks very well. Clearly a decently funded movie, but honestly this was not worth the amount of time that it was made into. The story could have been done in 30 to 45 minutes. Doubling it truly dragged it on longer than was needed.

Good setting of mood and creepy vibe, but almost funny at times
elgatorojo6926 April 2021
I thought the cinematography and sound effects lended to the movie's creepiness, but the positive aspects don't go far beyond that. Like many reviews have stated, the pace of the movie is extremely slow. I kept waiting for something to happen but I was dragged from scene to scene till the final plot reveal ...to absolutely nothing original in horror. The female lead seems to be the only one conscientious enough to realize they've landed in a f-ed up scenario and her companion just wonders about aimlessly taking in everything like, "What's the big deal?" There were elements of the film that had me wondering if there was some kind of supernatural entity at work, but those were dumb plot points that remained unanswered at the end of the film.

Bizarre and disturbing - but not necessarily in a good way
petarilic3211 October 2021
First act is interesting and I really expected this to be a 6/10 movie but it falls apart after roughly 45 minutes. I understand what were they going for with the atmosphere and the soundtrack etc. And it would've worked! If there was a better story/execution.

Protagonists have a very strange relationship which isn't elaborated on a lot so they're not likable as a couple at all. Despite that, I found myself liking them as individuals and rooting for them.

Grandma is creepy and the movie has that weird kind of aura all around but unfortunately it's not the good kind of weird since it leads to nothing in the end.

There was a lot of potential here. It's a common theme this year for directors to ruin horror films with second and third act for whatever reason. There were no memorable scenes or even good ones that I can recall.

Didn't like the ending.

Overall, it was somewhat interesting and I wasn't bored but it profoundly lacked layers of the story and most of all, decent scenes. 4/10.

Waste of time
nadiegil24 April 2021
If a snobby Film School drop-out tried to make their own rip-off of Texas Chainsaw but remove all aspects of horror, thrills and intrigue and replace it with some vague message of consumption it would be this.

Started off OK with some nice photography, and interesting sound design but quickly devolves into drawn out boring monotonous nonsense with absolutely nothing to offer the viewer aside from an overacted almost comical cameo by sister-diddler Lena Dunham.

Props to the poster designer for an interesting straight-up-horror design, but don't be fooled, a more accurate poster would have been the cast sitting at a dinner table looking bored.

This was a 10 minute art-film on Vimeo extended for 2 hours.

Just Awful
FilmFatale17 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you spliced together the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and House of 1000 Corpses and removed every interesting character, every bit of action, every ounce of plot, and every second of horror; left only scenes of unlikable people eating unappetizing food (often in nauseating closeup) while watching staticky TVs/listening to cassette players; and then for some godforsaken reason added Lena Dunham as an armless, legless pseudo cannibal who lives in a plywood box and stretched all that out to one hour and forty-six minutes...you still probably wouldn't wind up with a movie as dull and pointless as Honeydew.

Avoid.

Awful editing
Leofwine_draca14 October 2021
A really awful psychological horror yarn. A couple find themselves stranded at a remote farmhouse occupied by a crazy old lady and her weirdo son. Some tremendously poor editing scuppers this effort early on, and then it becomes apparent that there's very little story so that the whole thing starts to get laboured and overblown, pointless persisting to the non-climax.

Getting tired...
nimitz54129 March 2021
Getting tired of all these art school dropout attempts at movies.

Poorly filmed, unknown cast, story was terrible, and dont get me started on the editing.

I'm sure netflix will give it a home..

A bit ridiculous, and zero point. Also I know you must keep a story going but they way they propelled this story foward was absurd. These are two elders holding you hostage, kick this old lady out the way and let's go.

A Different Kind of Creepfest
eabra484635 June 2022
No question, "Honeydew" is not for everyone. It's a creepy, slow-burning affair that takes a willing viewer on a wild ride. The acting is uneven, but it is strongest when it is needed the most, which helps carry the film and drive it home. For a low budget horror film, it is very well made, expertly filmed and perfectly paced; it's scary in ways that go beyond the typical jump scare fest. It's not a masterpiece and it's not for everyone, but for many off-beat horror movie fans, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Cringeworthy
pravsathi3 April 2021
Don't get fooled by the thumbnails or the posters. This movie is extremely slow and not at all cohesive. It introduces different story lines which does not point towards a common closure. You are always left with wanting some more explanation. Don't get swayed by the Spielberg in the cast.

Is there some sort of conspiracy hate for this movie?
Nikkiangel0021 July 2023
I honestly cannot believe the low review!

It has great tension and mystery, it was grim and bleak. Very clever movie. I've rewatched to be sure I wasn't mistaken but honestly I highly rate it as a horror fan. I'm not sure, maybe the reviews come from folks that done watch this type of horror? But I really recommend.

I loved the subtle tensions building, and yes I hated the boyfriend and his ignorance. Practically screaming at the screen. It's super eerie and the vibes instantly are off but he doesn't see.

The use of sound in this movie is genius in the way it builds tension. Very dark movie, like I said I don't get the low rating at all. Give it a go.

I don't understand the massive hatred against this film
gedikreverdi12 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's kind of art house horror with a creepy atmosphere and it's not on par with Hereditary but rating this less than 5 out of then is absurd. After they got lost, they camped on a field and the owner wanted them to get out of his property. Then they showed up at the door of a house nearby to use their phones. Karen the most interesting character of the film invited them in and fed them saying a friend of her can help them with their car. Then there was an overweight guy whose face was covered partly with bandage and he was eating and watching old black and white cartoons mostly Popeyes and Popeyes looked so ominous in that house. The locals were going mad by getting poisoned with a specific type of wheat they they cultivate. They have gangrene in the extremities and damaged nervous system that led to insanity. Eunice the ex vet and the property owner of the land that they camped and she had signs of gangrene. They stayed overnight down in the basement in a room where no sane person would stay. The man Sam went up to eat because his girlfriend was very dominant and deciding all for himself. Then they were both taped back to back and had oxygen masks on and I guess they were breathing some tranquilizer. They were eating the butt flesh of Sam. The chest in the ruined house contained their daughter whose limbs were amputated. They were using her body for sacrifice to god like the fat man and the couple. When the elderly Cannibals were talking to the police, Sam convinced Gunni the other victim to untape them and he carried rylie to the forest and Karen killed gunni and started feeding and eating the couple. In the basement she also made her daughter and Sam to have intercourse because she wanted a grandchild. Barbara Kingsley is amazing in this film as Karen The score done with human voices was good as well.

Unrelatable characters and painfully boring confusing story
thisisjakea10 May 2021
Completely boring. Also no character in the story is remotely relatable, and they all seem to do random, confusing things all throughout. We finished it thinking there would be a payoff, but nothing. No character growth, no story progression. Every shot was just a confusing closeup.

The lighting was pretty nice, that was about the best part. This movie could have been a 5-10 min short and had the exact same character development and emotional tension.

Yeah but no
BandSAboutMovies26 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From the minute Sam (Sawyer Spielberg) and Rylie (Malin Barr) get lost in the country and have their battery run down, their fate is sealed. I'm not giving you a spoiler warning. The fact is that you're going to know exactly what you're getting into with Honeydew, a film that retells the same backwoods cannibal religious family story you've been seeing since Tobe Hooper grabbed some guts from a butcher shop and let them dry out in the Texas heat to diminishing returns nearly every time.

They make their way to a farmhouse where a woman named Karen and a man we think is her son have both gone mental from sordico, a poisonous spore that infects food and can cause all manner of mental derangement. The more Sam eats - he hasn't been allowed any real food in a while - the more he starts dreaming of characters in old cartoons discussing his stomach problems.

So yeah. I could tell you the story of Honeydew in a few sentences, but it's another one of those movies that take forever and a day to get to its not all that shocking ending. You've seen it all before, but here it is with slick typography, slow-motion sequences and split screens.

Writer/director/editor Devereux Milburn has plenty of talent and I think there could be a pretty great movie from him someday. But this really isn't it. Your mileage may vary because if we've learned anything from the movies that I talk about on this site it's that today's elevated horror just doesn't grab me in the way that it should.

I tried to be reasonable in this review and not go with my gut, which was just to say, "Honey don't."

HARD PASS!
olsonbr-749408 May 2021
I wasted however long this movie is (not wasting my time looking it up) minutes of my life on this trash.

Yeah, it has a good premise, but the directing choices are trash, the scenes are long and drawn out without adding any substance. Plot tie-ins are stretched too thin and don't even flow properly.

It's just dumb. Really. It's a dumb movie. I did rent it, so that's a wasted $6.

Seriously, don't watch it, it's stupid.

Just say no.

D. A. R. E. To resist the movie Honeydew.

Not as bad as some say, not as good as others say
haskel-7295129 May 2021
If the director dropped all the art film oddity, this is a movie you've seen a million times before. Nothing new, nothing great. It is odd. Very odd. I suspect that is due as much to wanting to disguise it's formulaic nature as it is to directorial indulgence.

Took itself too seriously Warning: Spoilers
Too many cliches that were taken too seriously but given no depth. Never got to bond with any of the characters so didn't really care about every foreseeable event. The "big reveal" at the end (and the whole movie) lasted way too long. This old bag can hardly walk down the stairs, how TF can she facilitate lobotomized amputee boning? Everything was annoying- the characters, the pacing, the dialogue. It's just annoying. Fair production value, appreciable cinematography.

One star is to many.

Movie has no direction. Just odd sequences that you have no clue. It truly was a waste of my time. I came away confused. I don't know what has happened to movies that at least make some sense.

I want my $6.99 back, please!
Borntobeactive30 April 2021
This movie was like watching my grandmother walk a full marathon. This was not art, this was not creative, this was not a film. This was a waste of 1 hour and 49 minutes. The movie is extremely slow and filled with unnecessary suspense music, sounds and scenes that made me ask myself why didn't I look up the reviews before watching this. The plot is senseless and abrupt. I did enjoy the first 4 minutes of this movie though. I appreciate the acting but survived the movie. I didn't get it and I would pay not to see this movie again. The world would be a better place if they didn't create these type of movies.

Surprising and unique
calicut11012 June 2022
A 7 is way too generous for this film but I want to help it get more viewers. The film is not for everyone but if you like a slow burning and atmospheric horror this is a good choice. The acting and cinematography were totally fine, this was not a B movie in that sense. How they use music, build tension and unlock little surprises was a unique experience. I would never recommend people go watch this or say it's a "good" movie, but, if you're like me and you stumble upon it with nothing else to watch I'd definitely give it a try. Most true horror fans will think this is entertaining.

TCM Lite
kyleball-5132830 March 2021
This movie seemed like what the Hewitt family from the TCM do in their spare time when Leatherface is nowhere to be found. It started out fine but didn't manage to hold my attention by the final act, it just felt empty.

chrisoc-3587114 April 2021
I understand some of the critical reviews but 1 star is a little much. MUCH creepier vibe than I was expecting and is not you're traditional horror classic which is probably why some of been a little more critical. Stuck with me after the viewing and for sure worth the watch.

Extra star for
johnnymccarthy-6556914 March 2022
Yah HONEYDEW has the classic over used story of "car breaks down, couple knocks on door and a fiendish old lady totures them" yah its all there , but what happens in that formulaic plot is well filmed and acted classic b house horror. What it lacks it makes up in visuals. The editing is a little jarring but all in all I want pissed off watching this to the end and i was entertained.

HONEY DON'T
aloalo-5359110 April 2021
A story that didn't need telling, even the sound was but so was the action and story old as time. Take this as a warning to stop and turn back now before it's too late and you've wasted another minute on this "film". I thought Melissa McCarthys husband was bad but giiirrrlll this is a sure razzle winner.
