“The Conners” and “The Righteous Gemstones” star John Goodman says he misses his “Roseanne” co-star Roseanne Barr, but he’s not sure he’d work with her again.
Hit sitcom “Roseanne” was canceled by ABC in 2018 after a racially-charged tweet by Barr about Valerie Jarrett, an African American woman who was a senior adviser to Barack Obama throughout his presidency. Barr later apologized.
Later that year, Goodman told the Sunday Times: “I was surprised at the response. And that’s probably all I should say about that … I know for a fact that she’s not a racist.” He added that Barr was “going through hell.” Barr then thanked Goodman “for speaking truth about me.”
At the Monte-Carlo Television Festival this week, where he served as president of the fiction jury, Variety sat down with Goodman in the Blue Gin Lounge of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel, overlooking the Mediterranean.

Running the Monte-Carlo Television Festival since 2012, Laurent Puons has always tried to look ahead. From his embrace of streamers and digital platforms back in 2017 to his growing emphasis on diverse formats, the festival director sees his summer showcase as a bellwether event for the wider television industry – and what the industry could use right now, in Puons’ view, is flexibility.
“There are already so many festivals today dedicated to series,” Puons explains. “But Monte-Carlo follows a wholly different concept. We’re a home for all kinds of content, and one of the only festivals with both fiction and factual competitions. And when you see what’s broadcast on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, [you need to cover that full range.]”
This year’s edition runs June 16 – 20 and is set to welcome 10,000 attendees and host 1,500 interviews, altogether reflecting Monte-Carlo’s wider aim to offer global partners a full service festival stopover.

Carlos Alcaraz will make his tennis return at the Barcelona Open starting on Monday and he's excited to get the title defence underway.
Alcaraz won a few trophies last year but he's yet to successfully defend a trophy this year. His first chance came in Rio but he was beaten by Norrie in the final. The second one came in Miami but he was beaten by Sinner so Barcelona will be his 3rd chance to do so. Maybe 3rd time proves the charm for Alcaraz as he is excited about being back in the city. He has many good memories of it.
I love playing in Barcelona, I have very good memories, not only from last year, but also as a child. I'm going to try to avoid the pressure of being favorite and go out on court to enjoy. I will think of everything except defending the title.

Running from June 17-21, the Monte-Carlo Television Festival will mark both its 61st edition this year and its 10th under the watch of Laurent Puons. When the onetime boxer took over in 2012, he looked to reposition the august showcase created in 1961 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, reorganizing the competition and streamlining the juries. He also made the event a lot more public friendly.
“Appealing to the public is one of the best ways to promote a festival,” Puons says. “From my point of view, the public is the key. The public is the consumer, and the consumer decides whether a show will get a new season. No matter in streaming or broadcast or any other format, the audience decides a show’s future.” Working from the principle that if you build it they will come, Monte-Carlo keeps screenings easy to access and free; boasts a busy social calendar full...

This article contains spoilers for the film and book versions of Rebecca.
Leave it to Ben Wheatley to remake Alfred Hitchcock. The younger British filmmaking iconoclast has been nothing if not provocative with his filmography so far, which includes the disturbing horror-crime hybrid Kill List (2011), the serial killer black comedy Sightseers (2012), the psychedelic, very weird A Field in England (2014), and the unsettling dystopian nightmare, High-Rise (2015). But with Rebecca he takes on not just a classic Hitchcock film, but the master’s sole Best Picture winner. Why not, right?
We’re being facetious, of course. Wheatley’s version of Rebecca (now on Netflix) is not a remake of the 1940 film but a new adaptation of the 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier on which it is based. Both films are mostly faithful to the book (with a couple of notable exceptions), but Wheatley and his screenwriters coax a moral ambiguity and feminist...

It takes a certain amount of cojones to remake a movie by Alfred Hitchcock, especially one that nabbed the Academy Award for Best Picture and remains a stone cold classic some 80 years after it first came out. But that’s what British director Ben Wheatley has done with Rebecca, albeit with a film (his first for Netflix) that’s as much a new adaptation of the 1938 Daphne du Maurier novel as it a remake of the master’s Gothic melodrama.
Wheatley is no stranger to risky filmmaking–his resolutely indie resume so far includes extremely unsettling horror (The Kill List), genuinely weird psychedelic experimentation (A Field in England), disturbing dystopian sci-fi (High-Rise), and darkly comedic yet hyper-violent crime thrillers (Sightseers and Free Fire). His biggest risk here, of course, is having his work compared to a landmark from one of film’s most iconic directors. Yet he largely manages to pull off the attempt,...

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again,” begins both Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 best-seller “Rebecca” and nearly every adaptation of the Gothic novel that has followed, including Alfred Hitchcock’s atmospheric 1940 best picture winner. With such a definitive version already on the books, why reboot “Rebecca”? Well, as the opening line itself suggests, one can and does return to the film’s tragi-romantic estate — shrouded in fog and mystery as it is — as often as one pleases. A fresh take may be foolhardy, but it’s not without interest, and “High Rise” director Ben Wheatley aims to entice those who may be visiting for the first time.
If Rebecca was the first Mrs. de Winter, and Joan Fontaine’s character was the second, what does that make the two wives in Wheatley’s latest update? The third and fourth? Or thirty-first and -second? No doubt, many out there...

“Rebecca” is a story about a second wife who is bombarded with reminders that she will never be as glamorous, as worldly, or as seemingly beloved as her predecessor. Netflix’s new “Rebecca,” directed by Ben Wheatley (“High Rise”), is a remake that constantly reminds us it will never be as suspenseful, as witty, or as unsettling as its own predecessor, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 adaptation of the popular novel by Daphne du Maurier.
This new “Rebecca” has its own sense of style, and it’s not above fully embracing the pulpy delights of du Maurier’s book, but unlike the unnamed second Mrs. de Winter, it can’t quite break free of the inevitable expectations placed upon it.
That anonymous heroine is played this time around by Lily James, and as the story begins, she’s supposed to be a mousy little nothing — except that she looks and comports herself...

Mubi's double bill Renoir, Beginnings and Endings is showing September 15 - October 15, 2020 in the United States.Above: NanaJean Renoir, one of the greatest French filmmakers, if not the greatest, was a passionate raconteur. Not only did he write his expansionist memoir, My Life and My Films (1974), and rendered some of his life in prose in his late novels, but, according to his biographer, Pascal Merigeau, he also had a prodigious talent for molding fact into myth.Renoir’s dramatic story begins with his second feature, Nana (1927). Renoir adapted the tale about a striving actress from Émile Zola’s novel, to launch the career of his wife, Catherine Hessling. Hessling dreamed of Hollywood, as eventually did Renoir. Some ten years later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he lived till his death, in 1979. The film’s Nana plays hussies but dreams of a tragic role. When a theater director humiliates her,...

Ben Wheatley has emerged as one of contemporary cinema’s most dynamic genre filmmakers, thanks to projects such as “Kill List,” “Sightseers,” “High Rise,” and “Free Fire,” and now he’s taking on one of the most famous genre stories ever written: Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic classic “Rebecca.” Backed by Netflix, Wheatley’s “Rebecca” is the first major film adaptation of the novel since Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Hitchcock’s adaptation won the Oscar for Best Picture. Can Wheatley deliver a retelling of the same caliber? After a prolific streak the first half of the previous decade with Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, and Free Free, it’s been awhile since we’ve seen Ben Wheatley. While Happy New Year, Colin Burstead is still awaiting a U.S. release, he’s now returning this fall with an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel Rebecca, famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock for his 1940 Best Picture winner.

Thomas Bezucha, whose 2000 feature “Big Eden” was a queer festival favorite, is back with his first film as writer-director in nearly a decade. While his last effort, “Monte Carlo,” was a lighthearted family comedy, his next feature, “Let Him Go” is a much darker effort. The film’s first trailer plays like a Western riff on the “Taken” franchise. “Let Him Go” is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Larry Watson.
“Let Him Go” stars Kevin Costner as a retired sheriff and Diane Lane as his wife. Following the loss of their son, the couple leave their Montana ranch to rescue their grandson, who has fallen into the clutches of a dangerous off-the-grid family headed by a matriarch named Blanche Weboy (played by “Phantom Thread” Oscar nominee Lesley Manville). The couple are forced to fight for their family when they discover the Weboys have no intention of letting the child go.

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.
