Very bland and forgettable

While I didn't hate this short as the other reviewer, I have to agree with him about many things, specially concerning the lack of personality and convincing motivations of the main characters. And yes, he is also right about the love scene from this short being "corny to the extreme": When I saw it, my first reaction was to chuckle, since it was the kind of scene one would find in some bad fanfic written by a teenager.

The rest of "Candy Boy" isn't much better, unfortunately. The aforementioned scene isn't the only part of this french animation which shows a fanfiction-level writing, with the main characters being just mere cardboard stereotypes: The eponymous Candy Boy is the typical naive and innocent hero (Which won't be so bad if at least he or the rest of the cast had more discernible personalities) Samy is the typical "bad boy" of the school who is always smoking, the mother superior is strict and villainous and she looks as she was always angry...You got the idea.

In my opinion, anime aesthetic doesn't go very well with flash animation. Most of the time, the flash animations influenced by anime look cheap and poorly made, and sadly, this short isn't the exception.

While the premise is somewhat interesting, the final result leaves too much to be desired due the flat characters, bad animation and entirely unconvincing script, where the only remarkable moment is a incredibly cheesy love scene that literally came out of nowhere and feels shoehorned. This is a short which I personally won't recommend.

Also, "Candy Boy", seriously? What kind of of name is that?

Cheap images for a cheap story

Warning: Spoilers
That's possibly the worst French animated movie I've seen in my long life.

Graphically, it's a cheap Japanese manga clone; Big Eyes Small Mouth, long still sequences, etc. Although a percentage of mangas have some personality put in the art, this short film is not one of them. This is a classic example of graphical garbage with no redeeming qualities.

What's worse, the narration is a disaster. The characters have zero-personality and act with no sensible motivations. A love scene comes out of nowhere, not making any sense, and is corny to the extreme, complete with Hollywood-like orchestral music, glitter, and even literal ascension to the 7th sky (as they say in French). The smaller things make no more sense; for example, one guy lights a cigarette, takes one puff only, then tosses it away, accidentally starting a fire. Hard to find a lower form of plot device.

At this point, it's not necessary to enumerate the numerous other flaws of this pile of clichés. Skip that one; watch instead something fun, or clever, or emotional, or interesting in any way.

What The Actual?

I just don't get Anime! It's weird, so exaggerated and over the top. It's actually an artistic style that should work really well and could be beautiful if it wasn't so ridiculous.

And that psychedelic kiss was so odd and extreme! Where did it even come from?

The story itself had merit, but was in the wrong hands as far as I'm concerned.

It's also really strange to see anime in French.
