Actor David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the horror films The Boogeyman, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and Late Night with the Devil, has just launched a new talk show called Grave Conversations, with “first guest” honors going to actress Kate Siegel, whose credits include Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Grave Conversations interviews are expected to last just six to eight minutes and can be viewed on the official Instagram page. What makes Grave Conversations stand out from other talk shows, other than having Dastmalchian as the host, is the fact that interviews are conducted while Dastmalchian and his guest are both lying in Titan caskets.
Dastmalchian told Forbes, “After playing a talk show host in my most recent film Late Night with the Devil, I felt myself longing to take the...

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

What makes the horror genre so interesting is the variety of means used to convey certain ideas established by the author, as well as the aspects on which its 'scary' component is based.
Thus, when we talk about horror in cinema and television, many of us prefer those that scare us with their menacing atmosphere, such as the folk horrors The Wicker Man and Midsommar, as well as the series Midnight Mass. Some of us prefer movies that play directly on common phobias, like the sharks in Jaws, the spiders in Arachnophobia, or the clowns in It. Some of us like scares that come from a sense of the unknown, as was perfectly conveyed in The Exorcist, Poltergeist, and The Thing. And some of us just like quality scares, as was the case in Drag Me To Hell and Insidious.
So the concept of 'scary' can vary from viewer to viewer greatly,...

CinemaCon is currently going on in Las Vegas, with theater owners and members of the industry on hand to examine the state of the movie business. One issue that's already come up in a big way is piracy. Motion Picture Association (MPA) Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin took the stage during the State of the Industry presentation on Tuesday and spoke passionately about the matter of people pirating films. Rivkin boldly claimed that piracy costs theaters an estimated $1 billion at the box office annually right now. But the MPA isn't content to just let that continue, as it's also announced a plan to help fight the problem.
Rivkin revealed that the MPA now plans to work with Congress to enact site-blocking legislation in the U.S. This is not the first time that such legislation has been proposed, but as Rivkin pointed out, more than 60 countries around the world have adopted such measures.

You've likely heard plenty of JFK assassination theories over the years.
(And there have been numerous movies and TV shows on that specific, much-obsessed-over topic.)
But did you know that certain aspects of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln remain shrouded in mystery?
Sadly, there was no Reddit in 1865, so the amateur sleuths of the time were unable to share their theories or join in the pursuit of John Wilkes Boothe as he managed to evade authorities for 12 days.
Thankfully, the new AppleTV+ series Manhunt promises to plunge viewers right into the center of the days of crisis that followed Lincoln's shocking death.
The show stars Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass) as Lincoln and Tobias Menzies (Outlander) 16's close friend and Secretary of War who helped to track down his killer.
We're sure the show will provide all the details you'll need in order to grasp this watershed moment in American history.

For a guy who writes about awful stuff happening to people, Stephen King sure likes liking things. Just think about how many times he’s used his position to praise other creatives and projects. “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” declared his blurb for the American release of Books of Blood. “Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel,” he said of The Fall on Twitter in 2022. “Wish I’d written it.” Heck, his horror history book Danse Macabre ends with an appendix recommending over 100 books and nearly 100 movies.

Listen close! Follow my instructions. There is no time for introductions. The score for "Five Nights at Freddy's" is officially getting the vinyl treatment from iam8bit, and these albums are going to go fast. Officially licensed with Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, the "Five Nights at Freddy's" score contains the music from The Newton Brothers as featured in the smash-hit film adaptation of the ridiculously popular video game series. If you're reading this, you probably already know that and don't need me to explain why "FNaF" is so popular, so I won't waste your time. For the rest of you, here's your homework.

Back when we heard that Georgina Campbell was starring in the psychological horror film Lovely, Dark, and Deep, she was best known for winning a BAFTA TV leading actress award for her role in the 2014 TV movie Murdered by My Boyfriend. Since then, we’ve seen her name around here quite a lot, due to her roles in films like All My Friends Hate Me, Barbarian, Bird Box: Barcelona, T.I.M., and the upcoming The Watchers, Cold Storage, and Psycho Killer. As for Lovely, Dark, and Deep, it’s set to receive a VOD release on February 22nd, and we have the trailer embedded below.
This project marks the feature directorial debut of Teresa Sutherland, who previously wrote Emma Tammi’s horror western The Wind and was a staff writer on the Netflix / Mike Flanagan series Midnight Mass. The story of this “cosmic thriller” sees Campbell taking on the role of Lennon,...

Some horror properties naturally lend themselves to incessant sequels, while others seem to will themselves into existence through sheer will, as if they’re the result of a demonic possession. William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, while over 50 years old, is still considered to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. Various Exorcist sequels and even a two-season television series have materialized over time. However, none of these projects generated the same level of skepticism that accompanied Blumhouse’s announcement that they’d be producing not just a legacy sequel to Friedkin’s original film, but an entire trilogy, directed by David Gordon Green. Green had just pulled off a similar spectacle with his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy, yet Michael Myers’ slasher antics are much more conducive to this formula than repeated returns to The Exorcist’s MacNeils.

The best TV shows of 2023 have something odd in common: before they happened, most of them felt impossible. On paper, the idea of a complex and satirical retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest hits sounds strange, as does a real-life "Truman Show" style reality experiment built around one of America's most tedious pastimes. Before this year, we had no reason to think that our favorite cable drama would blow up its entire premise three episodes into its final season, or that the TV adaptation of a near-perfect video game would in some ways prove better than the original.
TV can and should elicit all sorts of responses from viewers, but by virtue of its continuous format, it's especially well-equipped to leave us surprised. With seasons' worth of watercooler conversations under our belts, viewers become confident prognosticators sure we know exactly where our favorite shows are headed, but some of...

With the corporate-friendly copyright laws printed on current edition U.S. law books, film distribution and production companies are the default custodians of cinema. That doesn't mean they approach the responsibility of ensuring people can watch what they want, with the attitude it deserves. Quite the opposite; films and TV are devalued as mere "content," can linger in rights-holding limbo away from public exhibition, and in the streaming era, it's easier than ever to just destroy a film, as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has proven.
Now, it's Sony's turn for some anti-consumer activism. Kotaku reports that Sony will, come December 31, be deleting Discovery reality TV programs from PlayStation 4 users' digital libraries. People who have already bought and paid for these Discovery shows will lose access to them; it's like returning an item to the store where you bought it, except you don't get your money back.

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. While talking about the film, Hiddleston also compared it to one of the most popular King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption!
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Hiddleston is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

When it comes to horror television, I think it’s safe to say that Mike Flanagan has cornered the recent Netflix market with five fantastic series on the streamer. But with great influence comes great debates about which show of the five is the best. Ultimately, that honor should go to Midnight Mass, Flanagan’s 2021 series about a small island that is rocked by a religious revival with deadly consequences. Yes, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club, and this year’s The Fall of the House of Usher are all great in their own right, particularly Hill House, but there is just something so special about Midnight Mass, which out of the Netflix TV mix is Flanagan’s only fully original work. While Hill House set a high bar as Flanagan’s freshman TV outing, Midnight Mass takes the elements fans have come...

Spoiler warning: This article openly discusses the full plot of “The Others.”
It’s been said many times that every love story is a ghost story, and the pop art of the 21st century would seem to suggest that the opposite is also true.
The rise of “elevated horror,” the traumafication of genre narratives, and the ever-increasing role that supernatural forces appear to be playing in arthouse fare have combined to recenter the heartsick longing — romantic or otherwise — that has always haunted tales of grief and loss, even if only from the shadows or in the subtext. These days, a movie or TV show about ghosts is less likely to scare you than it is to make you cry, and the ones that manage to do both tend to rely on the former as a means of accomplishing the latter; look no further than the work of Mike Flanagan, whose...

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. This post contains spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Mike Flanagan's partnership with Netflix has resulted in some of the finest works of horror of the past few decades. Between "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass," we have two masterpieces of horror. Plus, there's "Gerald's Game," one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever. Before that partnership ended, however, Flanagan gave us arguably his angriest and gnarliest work yet in "The Fall of the House of Usher."
The limited series, which is a loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's literary work, follows the titular Usher family, whose patriarch Roderick made a fortune in the pharma industry. Their nightmare begins when Roderick's children start dying. One of those children is Camille L'Espanaye. She is the head of PR at Roderick's pharma empire and a ruthless, sharp-tongued woman with dirt on every member of the family.

With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

[This story contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.]
With Mike Flanagan’s latest, the Edgar Allen Poe-inspired The Fall of the House of Usher, production designer Laurin Kelsey had a lot of houses on her hands.
The Netflix horror series goes full-tilt into Poe, complete with episode titles referencing one of his notable works, and the main home of the series’ patriarch (played by Bruce Greenwood) being a twist on the one featured in the late writer’s original short story. It also stars Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Kyliegh Curran, Carla Gugino, Carly Lumbly, Zack Gilford and Willa Fitzgerald.
The Fall of the House of Usher follows the lives (and deaths) that surround siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, the ruthless founders of the Fortunato Pharmaceuticals empire. Literally built on the pain of others, their family’s wealth, privilege and power...

Mike Flanagan, the filmmaker behind Netflix horror shows like "The Haunting of Hill House," "Midnight Mass," and the recently released "The Fall of the House of Usher," has a stable of actors he uses over and over again. Folks like Carla Gugino, Kate Sigel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, and more. It's fun to see these actors pop up again and again in Flanagan's work, and it is just as fun when he adds a new player to the mix. One such new player is none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. In "House of Usher," Hamill plays Arthur Pym, attorney and fixer to the infamous Usher family.
Hamill is clearly having a lot of fun with the role, adopting a gruff voice and playing the morally dubious Pym as a weird little guy. Hamill fits in perfectly with Flanagan's usual ensemble, and he makes the most of his limited...
