- "Heroes" - "Chapter Ten '1961'" - April 13, 2009
Previously on HEROES...all roads point to Coyote Sands, including the deleted scene from last week between Mohinder and his landlord, who says Chandra had nightmares, screaming into the night.
We pick up at the archaeological dig in Coyote Sands. Nathan, Peter, HRG, and Claire have uncovered several skeletons. Peter thinks digging up the graves is wrong. Claire tells Peter to give Nathan a chance. Peter thinks Nathan has pulled the wool over her eyes. He asks Angela what they're doing here. He says they need answers and wants to know what happened here.
She turns and the picture fades to black and white as a bus arrives to "Coyote Sands - Relocation Center" in February 1961. An Indian doctor checks off his clipboard and calls out for Angela and Alice Shaw. They are standing in a line of people. The doctor welcomes them, it is Chandra Suresh. He shows them around the area: playground, dining room, game room- they show movies every night with the best popcorn you ever had! The folks follow along with suitcases. The girls are put in a cabin across the way from their parents. Angela notices guards with guns. Suresh says the guards are there to keep them safe.
As they get settled, three good looking young men enter their dorm to give them a proper welcome, asking if they got the milk and cookies- they are a young Daniel Linderman ("Welcome to Crapola Sands."), a black man named Charles Deveaux, and a young Bobby Bishop (who should really be about ten, not late teens). They come in to say hi and flirt with Angela. Alice doesn't like being separated from their parents. Angela says it'll be fun, like camp. Alice wants to go home. Angela opens Alice's suitcase to find toys and books. She protests that "Banana" told her to pack what she 'needed'. Angela hands her her copy of Alice in Wonderland, promising to get her some clothes.
Angela explains that this place will cure her of her nightmares, the ones from which she wakes up screaming. Alice likes this idea. Angela says it's genetic so they have to stay and figure it out and since she's always had Alice's back she hopes Alice will have hers this time. The sun comes out and Alice agrees.
We cut back to the present. Angela explains to Peter that her sister and her parents all died here and if the family doesn't come together she's afraid history will repeat itself. Someone watches this from a second floor window of a nearby house. A hand runs over a torn lace curtain in the window.
Angela stands in a dilapidated house and explains that it was a different time in 1961. "Kennedy was President and we were all patriots." When the government found out about the abilitied they told them they could cure them and they rounded them up and put them in this camp. Claire asks what happened. Angela says she doesn't know since she was lucky enough to have survived. Her family didn't. Peter wonders why they're here since she could have told them this in a restaurant. Angela says she's been dreaming a lot about her sister. The dreams are confusing but she thinks she has to find her body or a piece of clothing to give her a proper burial. Peter says she should have told them. She says it's a mother's right to protect her children from pain, besides it was her nightmare.
She says they made everyone forget. Claire wonders who "we" is. Angela explains "the Company" started here with a vow by the survivors to never let this kind of round up happen again. She says "they" destroyed files, erased memories, blackmailed and killed people. (You know, the usual). She says it worked for 50 years (give or take a few years, it's only been 46). She says that HRG and she have tried to fix the situation but Danko is too resourceful. Angela says the important thing is to put their secret back so they can stop running. It's time to go back to the "old methods." Claire wonders if that means erasing memories and killing people. Angela says it's a necessary evil. Peter says he's sorry for what happened here but it didn't give Angela and the others the right to do what they've done. Angela says they need him. Peter says he won't be a part of it and flies off. Nathan says he'll get him.
Angela watches them fly off and then flashes back to her youth, rendered in resplendent black and white. A young Angela awakens from a nightmare. It's March 1961. She walks outside her dorm to be confronted by the trio from the last flashback who know her nightmares come true. Deveaux says she's not the only one that knows something strange is going on. Linderman asks about a scar on her leg. She says she got it in a bicycle accident. He heals her. Deveaux says it's one big science experiment and that they're the rats. Angela says they'll be cured. Deveaux is unconvinced and likens the camp to Nazi Germany and "America did it too, with the Japs.". Angela says this is different. He asks about her nightmare. She says her dreams are confusing. Deveaux says she has to stop being afraid and start believing in her dreams. She tells them not to trust Suresh. Alice comes out, Angela shoos her back in. They go back to bed. "Say goodnight, Alice." Alice replies, "goodnight, Alice," then complains her feet are cold, so Angela promises to get her some socks. Alice says she overheard Angela talking to the boys. Angela says the boys have an overactive imagination. Alice confesses fearfully that she has a power too, she says she thinks she can control the weather, explaining she damaged their father's car with hail after getting upset over her bad report card. She makes it snow to prove her point. She wonders fearfully, "Is Dr. Suresh going to come for me?"
We flash back to the present. Claire wonders why Angela didn't tell Nathan and Peter about her sister. Angela asks where HRG is. Claire says she wanted alone time with grandma, and wants to help Angela. Angela says she was about Claire's age when she came here. All she cared about was boys. She says she wishes she was strong and not self-doubting like Claire, who counters with "Maybe sometimes." Angela says if she had trusted herself like Claire did all of this might not have happened. Claire says she didn't answer her question. Angela asks Claire if she's ever done something so awful that if she talked about it she'd never stop crying. Then the winds begin to blow. Angela says this is what happened in her dream and that it must be Alice and runs out into the storm calling for her. Claire pulls her back inside.
Nathan catches up with Peter at the Burnt Toast--er, Coyote Sands Cafe. Peter accuses Nathan of creating this problem. They argue about an '86 Mets' game, going to the playoffs or the World Series with Arthur. Nathan told Peter to go to the play off game so he was sure to see a game. The upshot is underneath Nathan's generosity is selfishness. Nathan says they have to find a way to forgive each other. A severe storm warning comes on the TV.
HRG stumbles in the storm calling out to Claire. He's whacked by a sheet of metal and falls. Someone grabs him and pulls him inside a building. It's Mohinder. Over the storm winds, he demands to know how HRG found him. HRG explains about Angela and the past and how they didn't "find" him, they came here on her directive. Mohinder is freaked by the news. HRG asks what Mohinder is doing there. Mohinder shows him the file he found on his dad, which includes pictures of Angela and Alice. He says 50 years ago his father was a doctor here and he came looking for answers, but now he's not sure he wants them.
We flashback to April 1961 and Dr. Suresh is talking to the Shaw girls. He pulls Angela aside. Alice goes to the window to watch them walk away, fearfully. Suresh takes Angela to a testing facility where he shows her the back side of flashcards (3 wavy lines, triangle, etc). She's nervous about the cameraman, but telling him what's on the cards without being able to see the front. She says she's not reading his mind but had a dream about this exact moment. She says not all her confusing dreams come true. He makes a note and asks what else she's dreamt about. She says she dreamt that he's going to kill everyone at the camp. He assures her that's not going to happen. She says he's a good man but it's going to get out of his control. He says if she leaves that she will ruin the good work they're doing here. They banter and she finishes a quote he's reciting to her -- not because she's read Einstein's work, she explains, but because Suresh recited the quote in the dream. He goes to give her an injection from an enormous needle.
In another windswept building (in the technicolor present day) Angela tells Claire that she tried to warn them but it didn't work and that this storm is an angry Alice trying to get her attention. Angela insists she has to deal with it alone. Claire says it's too dangerous out there and asks her not to go, but Angela takes off anyway. Peter and Nathan fly up as the storm clears. Claire tells them that Angela is gone.
The storm is over. Mohinder wonders if his father was Dr. Mengele. HRG says they don't have the facts and working with the enemy doesn't make you the enemy -- Mohinder should know that. HRG says he met Suresh and he was a good man and not to make assumptions when Mohinder asks who they're talking about. Nathan, Peter and Claire stumble upon them looking for Angela. They regroup to continue the search.
Mohinder and Peter team up to look in the old testing facilities, where Peter steps on an old syringe. Mohinder thinks they're destined to repeat their parents mistakes, pointing out that he's tested human beings like guinea pigs, just like his dad did. Peter says he knows Mohinder and he's a good person. Mohinder says he's weak, corruptible, and selfish. Peter says they're all selfish to a degree. He says Angela brought them here to start a new Company. Mohinder says maybe Peter can get it right this time since he didn't suffer the pain of the place like the original Company founders.
"My Two Dads" time: HRG, Claire, and Nathan look elsewhere. HRG says he and Nathan made a mess of things. Claire picks up a cover of "Alice in Wonderland" that used to be Alice's. (Although she doesn't know that). HRG tells Nathan about Sylar, now a shape-shifter, and he almost made him kill his wife. Claire asks what the last book they read was, the last movie they watched. She laments their lost leisure time and wonders when they get to go back. She says she should be a basket case, but she's not. She says she tried so hard to impress them, becoming an agent, trying to stop the bad guys. HRG says she was very brave. She says she was an idiot, all she wanted to do was grow up. that's all teenagers ever want to do, her father Nathan laments. Claire says once upon a time, she wanted to be a doctor, a chef, class president. Not an agent.
We flashback to May 1961. Deveaux and Angela are preparing to sneak out and save everyone. They argue about leaving Alice behind. Deveaux says it's dangerous, she'll slow them down. Angela says she promised to never leave her. Deveaux tells Angela to lie to her and leaves. Angela goes to her and tells her that the boys are sneaking out. Alice wants to come and Angela says she can't because she wants to hang out with kids her own age. She asks Alice to cover for them. Alice says she's scared. Angela says she had a dream last night about Alice and that it's going to be safe there. She promises and says she'll be right back, she'll even bring her socks for her cold feet. "Now say goodnight, Alice." "Goodnight, Alice," she replies.
Back in the present Angela awakes in a room crowded with junk- old papers, a bed, a copy of "Alice in Wonderland" with no cover. It appears to be a storm cellar. A door opens above and feet descend the stairs. Angela confronts her sister, who now has tangled gray mane of hair. The wind picks up.
WE see the cellar is a bunker built into a hill. Angela begs her sister to look at her, talk to her. Alice puts on an old record. It's "Crying" by Roy Orbison.
They flash back to May 1961, Coyote Sands Cafe. Angela tells the boys that the cops don't believe her and that they have to do something. They're more interested in their french fries. Deveaux asks Angela to dance, since he knows this is her favorite song and she missed her prom. They dance, and as an interracial couple, draw negative attention. The cook asks them to stop, they don't allow that, especially with "colored." Deveaux apologizes, then makes all the diner patrons who have stopped to watch, forget they saw anything. Angela realizes this is his power. A severe storm warning comes on the radio. Angela says they "have to get back to Alice. Now!"
Back in the present Alice tells Angela she's not going crazy, she's really alive. Angela asks how it's possible, has she been there for 50 years? (2007-1961=46, Angie!) Alice says when she found the shelter it had food and when it ran out, she stole what she needed, clothes, food, stuff. Angela asks why she stayed. Alice says Angela told her she'd be safe if she stayed there and Alice trusted her. She thought she'd be safe and the world would be safe...from her. Angela asks what happened the night she left. Alice says Dr. Suresh came for her that night.
We flash back and see Dr. Suresh trying to give her the injection. The cameraman holds her arm. Alice makes him stop by creating a storm, including lightning that strikes someone standing by the door. She runs out. Suresh tries to stop her and calm her down. He slaps her to break her concentration. He says he's sorry as Mr. Shaw comes to Alice's defense and throws a shockwave blast at Suresh that sends him flying. A soldier shoots Mr. Shaw in the right soldier and he drops. At that point, it's a riot, as the bullets and the powers start flying. Alice hides under a building as we hear the chaos. She looks back to the one she just fled. a sign says "BLDG 26. LAB" and she covers her face.
Back in the present, Alice cries into her scarf, recalling the story. Angela tries to comfort her and says she doesn't have to stay here anymore and that it's time to go home, she has socks for her. Angela says whenever she's felt lost, hasn't known what to do in her life, she's stolen socks to remind herself that there are simple ways to protect the ones we love. Angela apologizes. Alice says it's not her fault. Angela admits that it is her fault and that she lied to Alice about her dream of safety that night.
Alice freaks out at this news and creates a storm inside the shelter. Angela is blown back by a near miss of lightning. Mohinder and Peter run in and try to help. Mohinder reminds Alice of his dad on that night and she throws him away with some lightning drawn from outside. Peter holds Angela. Angela breaks away and says she has to talk to Alice. She tells Alice that this is her family and that they're the only ones that can make everything alright and to not punish them for her mistakes. Alice quiets, as does the storm. Angela tells her it's time to come home. "Say goodbye, Alice." Alice says "no" and runs up the stairs. Angela runs after Alice, but she's gone without a trace.
Mohinder looks out over the camp. Peter comes and tells him that Alice is gone. Mohinder says he thinks he knows what his dad was doing judging by her reaction. Peter hands him a film canister saying it might hold some answers about the elder Suresh. Mohinder notes that the storm covered all the graves and maybe the story should stay buried. Mohinder says he's not coming with Peter because he's not ready to move on, to forgive himself. Not yet. They shake hands and Peter walks away.
At the Coyote Sands Cafe in the present Angela listens to kd lang's version of "Crying" on the radio. She flashes back to the same spot and sees herself saying to the boys, "We can never let this happen again, ever." Linderman says the government already knows about them. Angela says not for long since she had a dream that they were going to form the Company, a group that would protect people like them. Bobby Bishop protests, "We're just kids". Angela says they're not kids anymore. Deveaux wonders what they do in the dream. "Whatever we have to," says Angela, noting that the government is right to be afraid of them especially given the things that they're going to do to keep their secret safe. She says it's a necessary evil. Back in the present Angela is watching Claire, Nathan, Peter, and HRG eat. Nathan walks over and hands her the copy of "Alice in Wonderland," reunited with its cover. She laments she'll never see her sister again. Nathan says she doesn't know that and he understands how she feels, the guilt she's feeling but that she has to let go of it. He asks her to join them. She sits with them. She holds hands with Peter. Claire asks someone to say something. Angela asks, "how are the fries?" Peter speaks up, saying this isn't a company but a family, and families have the capacity for forgiveness. He says they're stronger together than they are apart but no more hunting, they have to make their existence secret. HRG tells Claire they'll try to put their lives back together.
Claire asks what they should do now. Nathan says he'll go back to Washington, take ownership of his mistakes and talk to the President. Claire notes that it looks like he already has -- as they all glance at the TV where "Nathan" is at a live press conference, giving a speech about bringing purpose back to the White House. "Who the hell is that?" he asks.
"Sylar." HRG realizes. No one is amused.
