As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

Hallmark Channel has gone country. The network’s new rodeo-focused drama Ride is airing on Sunday nights. The show follows the McMurrays, a Colorado ranching family. They are fighting to hold on to their land while also moving forward after the shocking death of one of their own.
The Ride cast includes Nancy Travis as family matriarch Isabel McMurray, Tiera Skovbye as Isabel’s widowed daughter-in-law Missy, and Beau Mirchoff as her second son, Cash.

Austin (Marcus Rosner), the eldest McMurray son, is a big-time rodeo star, and Cash has always felt somewhat overshadowed by his older sibling. He joins the Marines to make his own way in the world, but in the Ride series premiere, he returns home to Colorado after having spent several years away.

October is here and you know what that means: time for the streaming services to put their spookiest foot forward. Amazon is doing its part for its new releases in October 2020 by rolling out some horror originals and library titles.
This is the month that the much-hyped Blumhouse horror anthology series Welcome to the Blumhouse arrives. “Episodes” of that, Black Box and The Lie launch on Oct. 6 and Evil Eye and Nocturne arrive on Oct. 13. Another horror-adjacent release of note is Truth Seekers, a comedy-horror series from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.
That’s about it for notable originals. Thankfully October 1 brings the usual burst of fascinating library movie titles. A Knights Tale, Spaceballs, and The Departed all debut on the first of the month. Terminator: Dark Fate arrives on Oct. 9. The superb final season of Mr. Robot will be available on Oct. 6. Start playing Pixies “Where is My Mind?...

At one point, back in the noughties, it seemed like there was a mad craze for adapting Asian horror cinema for Western audiences. Beginning with the unexpected commercial and critical success of Gore Verbinski’s The Ring (based on Hideo Nakata’s Ringu and Koji Suzuki’s 1991 novel), the remake trend only grew but sadly not in quality. As pale imitators like The Eye, One Missed Call, Shutter and The Uninvited poured in, one of the most successful was The Grudge in 2004. Based on Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), this remake was also directed by Shimizu and went on to earn mixed reviews but a near $200 million haul worldwide. Naturally a sequel followed in the puzzling The Grudge 2 (also from Shimizu) and even worse straight-to-disc film The Grudge 3. I mention this history for two reasons. One because this new film simply titled The Grudge was initially a...

We’ll be seeing more of Jamie in the upcoming season of Freeform’s Good Trouble. Beau Mirchoff, who has recurred as the character since season 1, and before that in the mothership series The Fosters, has been promoted to series regular for season 3. Production on season 3 gets underway today in Los Angeles.
Mirchoff’s Jamie is the handsome, charming, corporate lawyer and the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Callie. He’s also the brother of Callie’s brother’s wife. Jamie and Callie have had a passionate relationship that has been tested at times by their divergent political and ethical points of views.
The Freeform series follows residents of The Coterie as they deal with the consequences of their personal and professional decisions and realize that sometimes standing up for what you believe in comes at a price. The current season picked up with Callie and Mariana’s relationship on the...

The “Ju-On” movies are among the most influential and prolific horror franchises of the last 30 years, but good luck trying to watch them all. Created by Takashi Shimizu, they tell the story of a murder so horrendously violent and hateful that it leaves a house horrifically cursed, so that anyone who enters it takes the evil with them, like a supernatural virus. What began as a couple of short films and TV movies eventually became a full-blown feature film franchise, which then led to a hit American remake franchise, and recently a showdown spin-off in which the ghosts from “The Grudge” fight the little girl from the original “The Ring.”
But since most of the “Ju-On” movies are currently hard to find in America, the remakes are holding down the fort for the series. With a new “The Grudge” in theaters, let’s see how the American films rank up against each other.

Curse Strings: Pesce Reawakens J-horror Cornerstone with Studio Reboot
Director Nicolas Pesce becomes the first Borderline Film alum to enter studio filmmaking with his reboot of The Grudge, a seminal entry from the J-horror craze of the mid-2000s, a period littered with glossy American remakes of genre films from Hideo Nikata, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and of course, Takashi Shimizu. While more recent attempts to resurrect these franchises haven’t been successful, Pesce seems an inspired choice for the inevitable attempt for this Sony Pictures property, which saw its last entry, The Grudge 3 dispel its nasty spirit back in 2009.…...

A new clip from The Grudge has been released, which may put you off taking a bath ever again. The film will be the fourth installment of the Stateside branch of the unkillable franchise, and the first in over a decade after the sorely disappointing Dtv The Grudge 3 in 2009.
In comparison, its older cousin, the Ju-On saga is now up to eight films, not including the two shorts that preceded it, or Sadako vs Kayako, a crossover with the Ring series that began as an April Fool’s joke before becoming a real film.
This reboot and ‘sidequel’ is set in 2004 and runs concurrently with the original Us The Grudge, which was itself a remake of 2002 Japanese flick Ju-On: The Grudge and I’ll stop there to avoid confusing things too much. Sony Pictures have recently uploaded a behind-the-scenes featurette, which showcases interviews with the cast and crew who all share one idea: that The Grudge is going to be utterly terrifying. Lin Shaye (Insidious) said that “this is real horror” while John Cho (Star Trek Beyond) insists that audiences are “gonna be screaming.”
There’s also a clip of producer Sam Raimi singing praises for The Grudge as a franchise. While it originally started life in Japan, the Americanized versions have gone on to become enormous successes,...

In perfect time for the Halloween season, a brand new trailer has been revealed for the upcoming reboot of “The Grudge”. Watch below: Back in 2002, Takashi Shimizu made Ju-on: The Grudge, the first movie in a lengthy Japanese horror series. The film led to a three-part American remake: The Grudge in 2004 (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar), The Grudge 2 in 2006, and The Grudge 3 three years later. The first two films in the trilogy of remakes were directed by Takashi Shimizu himself, while the third installment was directed by Toby Wilkins. Now Nicolas Pesce to try a new take on the Japanese horror classic. This new version of “The Grudge”, which will be R-Rated in the United States, will be hitting theaters in January. The movie is produced by Sam Raimi, of “Evil Dead” fame.

True to its name, The Grudge is a cult horror franchise that refuses to relent.
Not since the release of 2009’s lacklustre The Grudge 3 have we welcomed a new entry into the supernatural series, but that’s all about to change very soon. According to Deadline, The Eyes of My Mother filmmaker Nicolas Pesce has climbed aboard to write and direct The Grudge for Ghost House Pictures, which will be based on a spec script from Midnight Meat Train writer, Jeff Buhler. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise are all on board to produce the horror reboot, working in tandem with executive producers Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.
Little is currently known about the plot, but it’s safe to assume that Ghost House Pictures’ reimagining of The Grudge will chronicle the titular entity as it moves from one grief-stricken victim to another, leaving...

More freaky-balls horror movies on the way: The Grudge is getting a reboot. According to Deadline, Midnight Meat Train screenwriter Jeff Buhler has been tapped to write the new installment in the franchise, which will be the first American Grudge movie since 2009. The Grudge, which spawned The Grudge 2 and The Grudge 3, is itself a remake of the Japanese horror movie Ju-on: The Grudge, which is the third of seven movies in the Ju-On franchise. That's a lot of Grudge! Plenty of Grudge to go around.

Below is a list of many of the newly released titles, along with titles we previously covered. Keep in mind that this list is from the Us Netflix streaming library and may differ depending on the deals Netflix has in place in other countries.

Roy Lee is looking to revisit two horror franchises that put him on the Hollywood map. Shock recently visited the Los Angeles set of 7500 - one of Lee's most recent efforts that pairs him with Ju-On / Grudge director Takashi Shimizu. There, Lee revealed to us that he was "looking to do a new version of The Grudge ." He stressed, "We haven't decided exactly what [the approach] will be. We've just put it out to film community that we're hearing takes from writers." The last installment in the series, The Grudge 3 , went direct to DVD in 2009. Fans of The Ring series, however, have not seen a new film since 2005 when The Ring Two was released. Lee hopes to remedy that absence with a new installment. "For The Ring , we're actually having...

Everyone remembers their first high school sweetheart -- unless, that is, you didn't have a high school sweetheart, and now things just got really awkward, much like the quasi-relationship between Jenna and Matty on MTV's hit show "Awkward."
You see, Jenna (Ashley Rickards), a high school nobody, had a summer camp fling with high school jock Matty (Beau Mirchoff), but then Matty started to be secretive and act like a jerk to Jenna, so she started to fall for nice guy Jake (Brett Davern). And that's when things started to get awkward. Jenna likes Matty, Matty like Jenna, but Jenna also likes Jake, who also likes Jenna -- but also has a ditzy blonde cheerleader girlfriend.
And just when it looks like Jenna has chosen her man -- when her and Matty share a passionate kiss on her crummy sweet sixteen -- Jake comes back into the picture. With only two more episodes this season,...

You learn something new about particular genres every day. Today, I learned that "The Grudge" was still alive and breathing, much to the consternation of horror fans. This might seem a stupid thing to not know -- I write movie news, after all -- but once a franchise goes beyond, say, "The Grudge 2" and into those direct-to-dvd installments, I stop paying attention. But thankfully, Bloody- Disgusting is around to remind us of these things, and they hear there's a new Grudge on the way. What they're trying to figure out is exactly what the hell that means. It's said to be "a reboot." But is it a reboot of "Ju-on", the Japanese original? Is it a remake of the American remake of "Ju-on"?What's even more perplexing is what format this might take. Will it be a big splashy theatrical release like "The Grudge" and "The Grudge 2" received?...

It never forgives. It never forgets was the tagline of the first 'Grudge' movie in 2004. And, apparently, it never dies either: Get ready for yet another remake of the Japanese horror franchise.
'The Grudge' started life as 'Ju-On' in two low-budget straight-to-video Japanese TV movies in 2000, which were then remade for the big screen by director Takashi Shimizu, as 'Ju-on: The Grudge.'
Cue the American remake and two more sequels. The last one, 'The Grudge 3,' went straight to DVD in 2009.
Now Ghost House Pictures and Mandate want to go back to the well for another retelling of the creepy curse that just won't die. No word whether it'll be headed to theaters or also to DVD

When Takashi Shimizu remade his 2003, Japanese horror movie Ju-on: The Grudge into the 2004 American horror movie The Grudge, the Japanese director helped solidify the J-horror movement that started in the States with the 2002 remake of The Ring.
Shimizu followed his success with the Grudge by directing 2006's The Grudge 2, but chose just to produce (along with franchise producer Sam Raimi) the direct-to-dvd 2009 sequel, The Grudge 3. While the third installment was a financial success, critics hated it, with one review calling it "an underwhelming cash-in".
Rather than plan another sequel, however, Bloody-Disgusting reports that Raimi's Ghosthouse Pictures is planning another remake of the original Ju-on movie. Whether Shimizu will return for this Grudge is unknown as is whether the latest remake will go straight-to-dvd or have a theatrical run. A third question might be, does anyone want to see another Grudge?

Like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and other stalwarts of the horror genre, The Grudge refuses to die. Bloody Disgusting breaks the news that Ghost House Pictures and Mandate are developing yet another remake of the long-running franchise, which has existed (and succeeded) in various formats over the years. First, a brief history. The series started with two straight-to-video, made-for-tv Japanese horror films released in 2000. Because those films worked so well, their director, Takashi Shimizu, helmed a theatrical version, titled Ju-on: The Grudge. A Japanese sequel followed. Right around that time, lazy Hollywood executives also were hunting down creepy Japanese properties (see The Ring), so Shimizu was hired in 2004 to direct an American version of his own film. Leading lady Sarah Michelle Gellar returned with Shimizu for The Grudge 2 in 2006, while The Grudge 3 went straight to video. Got all that? You almost need a flow chart. So now...

One of the most terrifying J-horror franchises of them all, Ju-On (or The Grudge as it's known here in the States), is still alive and kicking, and apparently there's a new one on its way!
According to Bloody Disgusting Ghost House Pictures and Mandate are currently developing another remake of the Japanese fear film.
Now a little history - Before the 2004 American remake, entitled The Grudge, Ju-on was originally released as two low-budget straight-to-video Japanese television movies in 2000. Three years later, due to the success of the videos, Takashi Shimizu, director of both telefilms, made a theatrical version based on the videos, Ju-on: The Grudge.
Now it gets tricky as that version spawned a sequel titled Ju-on: The Grudge 2. Then a year later Takashi Shimizu directed The Grudge, an American remake. It is based on the theatrical version of Ju-on, but it contains scenes re-enacted from all of the Ju-on movies.

Details are skimpy at best. But, what B-d does know is that Ghost House isn't done with The Grudge . Another film is in development, likely a reboot since the American version of the spookshow arguably turned sour by the time The Grudge 2 hit theaters and was followed with the direct-to-dvd The Grudge 3 . Overseas, the series has thrived with the recent release: Ju-On: Black/White (now available on Netflix instant). It's unknown if this new Grudge film is intended for DVD or for theaters. Sony, which released the American films, has been doing a deft job of exploiting the franchises it owns for the direct-to-dvd market, so perhaps this is a small-scale project. Time will tell. Just watch, it will be a "found footage" take on The Grudge ...

Director Toby Wilkins may be best known to genre fans as the mastermind behind movies including Splinter and The Grudge 3, but he recently took his career in a new direction and helmed a trio of episodes of MTV’s newest genre show, “Teen Wolf”, and the first of his three episodes kicks off tonight.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Wilkins about his experiences working on “Teen Wolf,” why diehard fans of the original classic film shouldn’t be so quick in dismissing the new series as a direct remake and just what’s up with the Splinter sequel that so many of us are dying to see.
Wilkins discussed how his longtime friend Jeff Davis (“Teen Wolf” series creator) was integral to getting the director involved with the series and why working on “Teen Wolf” appealed to him on a creative level. “I’ve known Jeff a long time,...

I must have watched the 1985 Michael J. Fox version of Teen Wolf dozens of times. It was one of those movies I must have asked my mum to video off the telly to watch with my friend Steven when I was about 10 and would just continue to watch until the video tape wore out! I wasn’t too sure how I felt about a TV series of the movie being announced by MTV a while back but then I heard that director of Splinter & The Grudge 3 (and one of our first ever friends on Twitter, Toby Wilkins) would be co-directing so I jumped on board with the idea.
The TV series stars Linden Ashby, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Tyler Posey, Colton Haynes, Holland Roden, Robert Pralgo, Jr Bourne and Sharon Morris.

In the world of direct-to-dvd sequels that's shortly to bring us Lost Boys 3, all an enterprising studio needs is the rights to a good title and a director who's willing to work fast
Lost Boys 3, the second sequel to Kiefer Sutherland's 80s vampire hit, is coming out later this year. What? You missed Lost Boys 2? Don't worry, so did Kiefer (although it does feature his half-brother Angus). Lost Boys 2, which went straight to DVD in 2008, is a poor retread of the original, but recouped its $5m budget in less than a month, paving the way for a third film. Welcome to the world of DVD sequels, where profits are high, stakes are low, and quality lower.
Back in the 90s, the direct-to-video sequel industry mainly produced animated or family films, with Disney in particular happy to churn out weak sequels for everything from Bambi to Pocahontas. However, the decreasing...
