There were many shows, both animated and non-animated, that were necessary for helping me through stressful times. Needed throughout school and still needed as a now disabled post-undergraduate and classical singer. 'Ducktales' was a personal favourite as a child and love it even more now actually with even more to appreciate and love, some not paid attention to as much before.
Wasn't totally enamoured with all the five parts of Season 2's first of two story arcs "Time is Money", too much Bubba being a big problem with "Bubba Trubba" (one of the lesser 'Ducktales' episodes in my view and a big disappointment, although not terrible) in particular. The fourth and penultimate part, "Ducks on the Lam" is one of the best ones and enough to make "Time is Money" a certainly more than watchable if inconsistent arc. A huge improvement over "Bubba Trubba" anyhow.
Bubba is much better used here in "Ducks on the Lam". He doesn't feature too much and serves a purpose to the plot, and an important and crucial one. One that makes him endearing, one with a big heart and not the "character that is to be taken in small doses" character he can be. He is amusing but it is his heartfelt chemistry with Scrooge where he shines most, a chemistry that allows for some genuine pathos without over-doing it, something that is especially evident in the jail scene. His destruction also doesn't irritate or is overdone. Scrooge is as ever a great character, a strong example of how to make a miserly character likeable, and Glomgold a fun antagonist. The Beagle Boys are hilariously awesome as always.
It is not just the Scrooge and Bubba chemistry, that aforementioned scene or the tear-jerker that is the time machine scene that shine. One of the episode's highlight is the exciting and wonderfully creative chase sequence. The animation is fine, it is very vibrant, fluidly drawn and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is also note-worthy. Can say nothing wrong about the music, the score is dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Just as animated shows of this kind should be. It is impossible to resist or forget the theme song, one of the catchiest in animation and ever. The dialogue is smart and a nice mix of funny and emotional. The voice acting is without complaint here.
"Ducks on the Lam" is not perfect. The imposter subplot was resolved in a way that was very half-baked and makes one go what and why.
Another what and why moment was how easily the police were fooled by the ridiculously obvious Scrooge portrait. Not very flattering or fair whenever the police are portrayed to be dumber than they actually are.
Overall though, a very enjoyable penultimate part to a more than watchable (mostly good actually) but uneven arc. 8/10
