Money have frozen over

Season 2 for 'Ducktales' was unique for the show. In that it comprised of two story arcs with five parts each, "Time is Money" ("Marking Time", "The Duck Who Would Be King", "Bubba Trubba", "Ducks on the Lam" and "Ali Bubba's Cave") and "Super Ducktales" ("Liquid Assets", "Frozen Assets", "Full Metal Duck", "The Billionaire Beagle Boys Club" and "Money to Burn"). Notable for introducing Bubba and Fenton/Gizmoduck, both acquired taste characters.

"Frozen Assets" is the second part of "Super Ducktales", and for me it is a marked improvement over the previous part "Liquid Assets" and easily one of the best episodes of both the arcs. That part though was still enjoyable with actually a lot of great things, but Fenton left me with very mixed feelings which did bring it down quite a bit. At times relatable and loved his chemistry with Scrooge but his idiocy was overdone and he could be irritating. Hence what was meant by the above comment saying he is an acquired taste character.

He works much better though in "Frozen Assets", and we are not talking about by a little, we are talking significantly so. A good thing as he is practically the main character here, if he was written the same as before this episode would not have worked. Here he is funnier and easier to relate to, he whines and self-pities less and the idiocy doesn't go too far. The Gizmoduck guise makes for some of the season's most creative moments and character writing.

Gyro makes one of his more interesting appearances in both arcs put together and in a while, while the Gizmoduck and Beagle Boys chase is one of the most exciting, most visually striking, most entertaining and most inventive scenes of the second season. Have always loved the Beagle Boys and "Frozen Assets" does absolutely nothing to change my mind. Likewise with Scrooge.

On top of being imaginatively done and exciting, "Frozen Assets" is also very funny. The lengths Fenton go through to retrieve the dime raises a number of laughs, especially when at Ma Beagle's cabin. Something that could have gotten tired quickly but done with a lot of variety and invention to avoid repetition and fatigue. There is even a falling for disguises play on, which was very clever and not what one that one expects. The writing is typically smart and the story absorbs straightaway and never lets go.

The animation is bright and colourful, with nice detail in the backgrounds. The music is dynamic in character and the theme song is one of Disney's catchiest in a period full of catchy theme songs for the studio at the time. The voice acting is great, Hamilton Camp continuing and earning his worthy addition status. Alan Young is superlative as Scrooge.

Altogether, great. 9/10
