'Blood Highway' tells an extremely claustrophobic story about life, hope and mortality.
A late-night phone call leads to tragedy when Martin Rose answers a call from his heavily pregnant daughter. An absent father and hopeless drunk, his chance of redemption comes in the opportunity to drive his daughter, Jenny, to hospital when she goes into labour. During the journey tempers flare, with the pain of past hurts stirred up upon the realisation that Martin has been drinking. A debate laced with bitterness and resentment becomes a heated row. The still birth of Jenny's first child the previous year, her father's inability to care for her mother when afflicted with early onset Alzheimer's disease and Jenny's partner's inability to deal with the loss of their child and subsequent reliance on cocaine; all this unvocalised pain and turmoil comes to a head in an explosive tit for tat argument which results in a catastrophic car crash. Martin and Jenny are hurtled from the road and trapped in the upside-down vehicle, at 4 o'clock in the morning, in the middle of nowhere. Jenny's phone is smashed and thrown from the car. Her father is trapped, impaled through the stomach by a tree branch and in desperate need of medical care.
Jenny is pinned, upside down, in her seat. Bruised and cut with a broken leg, she assesses their perilous situation. Her father is unconscious with blood spilling from a severe abdominal wound. Fuel drips through the chassis onto them both as smoke surrounds the car. It's the dead of night. Nobody knows their whereabouts. They are alone. And then her waters break.
Jenny is faced with a life or death struggle to free herself and her father, racing against time before the baby arrives. From an agonising inch by inch journey to retrieve a first aid kit from the boot of the car, to freeing her father and stitching his wound. The stakes continue to raise as Jenny must smash out a window and stretch her upper body through shards of razor-sharp glass to quell a fire that begins to spread outside the car.
