The Tempest.
morrison-dylan-fan6 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When looking at the Soho Horror Film Festival line-up, the Comic-Book style poster design made it stand out instantly to me. With it also being the longest of the feature films to be played, I got set to experience this tempest.

View on the film:

Introducing the screening/stream detailing the years it took to get this title made, writer/director Joe Badon reunites with cinematographer/ The Hunt (2020-also reviewed) drone pilot Daniel Waghorne for an ambitious genre mash-up,where the revelations of the crumbling relationship Anne Hutchinson (played with a fitting hazy vibe by Kali Russell in her feature film debut) has with her missing sister, dives from over saturated, surrealist Musical Pop-Art one moment, to icy supernatural High School Horror chills.

Stretched out to two hour runtime, Badon's initial spark of creativity, suffers from everything being pulled pass breaking point, with the plot being picked up,then dumped each time it hits a self-imposed dead-end which Badon can't find an exit to.

This causes the genre crossing to have an awkward, jarring atmosphere, via one moment staging a ultra-stylised set-piece, but dragging it out,to the point where attempts to cross over to another genre/style comes off as a stop/start of this performance of the tempest.

Believe the hype!

I saw this film yesterday and had to sit and let it marinate in my mind for a bit before I said too much too soon. Then went back and rewatched it to make sure I meant what I wanted to say. This movie is absolutely beautiful, in the strangest of ways. As the other review stated, it's a brain-melting film. But it's perfect. There's no such thing as a "perfect" film. But it's perfect TO ME. From the atmosphere, to the set locations, to the direction, cinematography, the editing (good lord, the editing in this film), it's everything I wanted and more when I saw the trailer. First few minutes make you think it'll be an anthology film, which at first I was like "ah, ok, well I guess that lends itself to do some cool stuff without being tied down by a narrative" but then the movie kept going, and I realized "no, everything has meaning and purpose. Nothing here was accidental." And by the end, I was truly wowed, moved, and mesmerized. This is a film that I want to STUDY. When this thing comes out on dvd and blu-ray, I hope it comes with a directors commentary to explain everything in great detail. From set designs, to deeper meanings, Easter eggs, everything. This is the type of film that makes me want to make films. 2020 has been a slow year for films (for obvious reasons), but this one made it worth it. Joe Badon is showing the big Hollywood directors how it's done.

Woah...

This was a brain-melting psychotic film. And I loved every scene. It's the type of movie that makes me mad because I wish I made it. Fantastic editing. The actors were quirky, just like the rest of the film. Everything that SHOULD be a flaw works so wonderfully with the movie's tone and style. This isn't a movie, this is a film. This is art. That said, it's a very strange and outlandish film. Within 1 minute, you know what you're getting into. And to me, that's perfect. Writer/director Joe Badon has not only crafted a masterpiece, but a new kind of masterpiece.

Watch the trailer before the movie and know what you're getting into

I have nothing bad to say about the movie and it is sure to be a cult classic. I hope so, anyway. In an oversaturated film market, I can imagine it would be difficult to get your work seen, but honestly this is such a weird movie that I think it'll stand out enough to be seen. Hope to see more from Mr Badon.

If you did not like it, you didn't pay attention!

The movie has elements of horror, comedy, dark comedy, mystery, sci-fi, music, and all far a low budget. This is what filmmaking is about, practical sets and costumes! Going against the grain and trying to make something new and exciting! This is why we watch movies, this is why film festivals exist; to give the little guys and girls a chance to show us all why they're made of. This is an imaginative movie that begs to be watched again and again.

Putting the art back in art house movies

I don't have any major gripes about the movie from my own personal taste. But I can see how the movie is so strange and has so much going on, that it could lose the a lot of people before each plot thread ties in together. And believe me, everything does tie in at the end, but I can see how the movie could potentially lose someone before then. As for me, I thought this was the best film of the festival I saw it at. And that says a lot.

Its trippy, its bizzare, its mezmerizing. give it a shot and support indie filmmakers. honest to the lord above, its my favorite movie of the year. it was every bit as smart as tenet, but was twice as innovative.

Great movie

It was crazy, but I loved it! Hope more movies like this start getting made. Wasn't predictable, there wasn't a stale formula to it. Whole thing felt fresh and different. Some performances might have been considered poor in other movies, but here it worked.

Just watch It.

Sister Tempest is without doubt one of the finest Indy films I have ever seen. In a competitive market oversaturated with crap, this film shines like a beacon of hope in a morass of boring badly made awfulness. You may think when you pick it up that it's just another pretentious artsy film, that it has a nonsensical story that will never come together... The film is so solid it makes steel feel like butter. A great cast, beautiful cinematography direction, editing... It goes on. I recommend it, and you've never heard of me... What have you got to lose?

No fluff, just art. Everyone did great. Lots of good work put in for such a small budget. I was highly impressed. Great job, everyone.
