Shiori Ito’s feature documentary “Black Box Diaries” about the investigation of the director’s own sexual assault, earned a standing ovation following its Hot Docs Canadian premiere on Monday.
The 103-minute film tracks Ito’s arduous, five-year struggle to bring to justice renowned TV reporter Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who sexually assaulted her. In 2015, Ito – then a 26-year-old intern at Thomson Reuters – went out for a drink with Yamaguchi, only to become intoxicated and taken against her will to his hotel room.
In Japan, according to the film, only 4% of victims of rape report their cases to police. But Ito “felt a strong desire for the truth to be known and to change Japanese society in order to prevent what happened to me from happening to more women.”
In 2017, Ito’s memoir about the rape, titled “Black Box,” was published and went on to win the Free Press Association of Japan...

Shiori Ito – face of Japan's #MeToo movement, one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2020, and author of award-winning memoir “Black Box” (2017) – assembled a documentary recording her rollercoaster of a lawsuit against her rapist, Noriyuki Yamagauchi. This marks her debut feature, “Black Box Diaries,” which premiered as a part of the World Cinema – Documentary Competition at Sundance Film Festival last month.
“Black Box Diaries” premiered at Sundance 2024 in the World Cinema – Documentary Competition. Its sales are managed by Dogwoof.
The documentary follows the heels of other stories that have been published that focus on the #MeToo movement, such as Chanel Miller's memoir, “Know My Name” (2019); Ursula Macfarlane's Weinstein investigation “Untouchable” (2019); and more recently, the prolonged court battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard (2022). While many of the previous examples are centered in the US, however, Ito's investigative journalistic take on her own rape case explores the legal murkiness of the Japanese court.

Combining two popular themes, an author struggling with writer’s block and AI run amuck, Blank is the story of Claire Rivers who can’t seem to put words on paper even as the bills pile up and the calls from her agent become more frantic. Finally, facing a one month deadline to either produce a book or lose her publishing deal she decides to spend that time at The Retreat, a high tech facility for the creatively blocked.
Her room comes complete with a holographic concierge named Henry and Rita an android assistant. There’s also a weird little device for Claire to attach to her head in order to stimulate her creativity. It doesn’t seem to help though as we mostly see her drinking wine and falling asleep in front of the TV.

Black Box (2023) kicks off with a simple but interesting opening scene which sets the tone for the rest of the film. Director Asli Özge does not waste any time in introducing us to many characters in a short period of time. She starts setting up the different pieces of the film and reveals them in layers one by one. Black Box is a claustrophobic, fast-paced drama that paints a stark picture of the lives of residents in an apartment building in Berlin.
The film starts with a tall construction crane moving a glass structure into the backyard of an apartment building. We later know that it belongs to a management company and the landlord Johannes Horn (Felix Kramer) plans to use it as his new office. The next day police blocked the entrance to the building prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving the building. The residents begin to question Horn...

Hey, fellow, "Big Brother" fans. Happy Friday and weekend. We are back in your faces with another very important Big Brother season 24 update. The latest Hoh (Head Of Household) competition was played in the very early morning hours of today, September 9, 2022 and the results are now in. As we previously reported, Terrance and Michael were evicted during last night's Live, Double Eviction episode and sent off to the jury house. That left only 5 remaining houseguests to play in this latest Hoh comp. Actually, it was just 4 houseguests that could play in it because Turner was the outgoing Hoh and could not play. According to the folks over at Big Brother Network, this latest Hoh comp was the Black Box comp, which required the houseguests to crawl around in the dark. It was a Horror Fest themed competition.

Nobody's telling horror stories quite like Mike Flanagan right now. His films and TV shows are equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying. His characters are often holding onto deep-seated emotional wounds, many of which are brought painfully to the surface in the face of some monstrous threat or supernatural danger. Even when he's adapting the works of literary titans like Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, Flanagan carefully re-works and re-purposes the source material, making it firmly his own.
His latest Netflix series, "The Midnight Club," once again sees Flanagan adapting someone else's work, this time that of Christopher Pike's 1994 young adult horror novel of the same name, with "Once Upon a Time" alum Leah Fong serving as the show's co-creator. Flanagan was among the young readers who took to Pike's book upon its release and he's been hoping to adapt it to the screen ever since. With its premiere...

Buckle up. “Black Box” is the kind of smart, taut conspiracy thriller Hollywood used to consistently make, only this one hails from France, which has been beating the American studios at their own game lately in the good-movies-for-grown-ups department. Centered on the eponymous device, recovered from a freak airplane accident, this engaging if slightly overlong film stars Pierre Niney as an obsessive forensic analyst who hears the words “Allahu Akbar!” on a recovered cockpit voice recorder and can’t quite believe his ears.
If the setup sounds a bit like Brian De Palma’s “Blow Out,” that’s hardly a bad thing, except “Black Box” centers on high-altitude hijinks, rather than a Chappaquiddick-like car crash. Opening the movie in mid-air, director Yann Gozlan leaves the crisis mostly up to the imagination, firing our neurons rather than our adrenaline receptors as he dollies backward from the cockpit, through the cabin, all...

Guilt By Aviation: Gozlan Delivers Intrigue with Paranoia Tinged Tech Thriller
Director Yann Gozlan returns to the realm of social pariahs in his fourth film, Black Box, an elegantly constructed tech thriller hearkening back to intelligent genre films from the 1990s. Focusing on familiar themes regarding his protagonists (who always seem to be hemmed in either by their considerable specific skill sets or a lack of them), Gozlan also reunites with his 2015’s A Perfect Man (read review) headliner Pierre Niney. Slick and unexpectedly intelligent, even with its inclusion of familiar conspiracy tropes, its navigation of aviation technicalities crafted by global terrorism and evolving industrial possibilities suggests a world on a wire subjected to the same unpredictable human factor as of old.…...

Even for the twisty paranoid thriller sub-genre, there is a whole lot going on in Yann Gozlan’s Black Box. Not boring yet not quite enveloping, the film never reaches its boiling point despite plenty of bluster. The story concerns Mathieu (Pierre Niney), a young black box analyst tasked with examining the recorded remains of a tragic plane crash. All 300 passengers died in what appears to be a terrorist attack aboard a brand-new aircraft. The deeper Mathieu digs, the more complicated things, of course, become. This plus a senior colleague (Olivier Rabourdin) who mysteriously disappeared breeds an obsession to discover the truth. A request to quickly clean up the mess from his stalwart supervisor (André Dussollier), alongside some willful ignorance from a friendly airline executive (Sébastien Pouderoux), and additional pressure from Mathieu’s own partner Noemie (Lou de Laâge)––herself responsible for certifying the planes that fly, including the one...

In the early days of what we used to call “coronavirus” in March 2020, before we all became budding epidemiologists, people flocked to Steven Soderbergh’s eerily prophetic 2011 drama “Contagion” on streaming services. Within a month or so, the movie was propelled from the 270th slot to the second most watched film in the Warner Bros. library, according to numbers from iTunes.
Two years down the line, Covid-19, which shut down the world and altered our way of life, hasn’t yet made its way into many series and movies, apart from a handful of fleeting acknowledgements. For comparison, the Spanish Flu, which killed more than 50 million people worldwide over roughly two years following World War I, is still nearly invisible in popular culture to this day.

Anytime a movie employs something to do with the mind, memories, and the kind of thrills that make people cringe when they try to sit through them, one can bet that there’s going to be a seriously messed-up reveal close to the end. Black Box kind of delivers on that idea, but not in a fashion that would be considered traditional or even typical. It’s fair to state that switching one’s consciousness from one body to another is something that’s been done before, but the manner in which it’s done this time isn’t just creepy as hell, it’s disturbing enough

After just more than a month on the air, Fox put Surviving Jack (1.2/3) out of its ratings misery yesterday as one of a group of comedy cancellations. and its short run wrapped with a 20% jump up from last week’s rating in adults 18-49. Maybe news of the cancellation got Jack some juice as did the 7% rise American Idol (1.6/5) saw last night with its live half-hour result show as the lead-in. Fox’s night started off with Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen (1.5/5), which dipped 6% from its May 1 show.
