Fox alternative entertainment head Rob Wade said the quick spread of the Covid-19 delta variant this summer caught everyone off guard — and led to the outbreak of cases registered on the set of “The Masked Singer.”
Last month Los Angeles County’s Public Health department reported 12 confirmed positive Covid-19 cases at Red Studios Hollywood, where “The Masked Singer” was shooting its sixth season. Production wasn’t shut down, however, and Wade says the season — the first with an audience back in studio since the pandemic began — will look and feel much like a return to normal for the show.
But that took a lot of effort — and the outbreak had a “huge impact” on the show, Wade said. “You have to realize with ‘Masked Singer,’ we had done two seasons of ‘Masked Singer’ and a season of ‘Masked Dancer.’ This was our fourth ‘Masked’ franchise within 18 months. It’s all...

Exclusive: Fox is getting the ball rolling on its own dating format aspirations.
The network is piloting Masquerade Ball, a non-scripted entertainment format from Natalka Znak’s ZnakTV and Fox Alternative Entertainment.
The one-hour dating competition gives singles the opportunity to escape their regular lives and enter a period when romance was formal, dressing up was compulsory and the search for love was a serious affair.
In Masquerade Ball, there is no swiping or liking, rather singles must rely on their own wit and charm. Because, in this world, it’s who you are and not what you look like that really matters. It’s all about chemistry, body language and conversation. The centerpiece of every episode is the decadent Masquerade Ball, where our singles have just a few fleeting moments on the dance floor to impress. Can they make these brief conversations count in their efforts to find the...

The non-scripted television business is made up of a wily group of people who deftly navigated their way through the Covid-19 pandemic to get a large volume of shows on air.
There is now new light at the end of the tunnel and shows that were shut down, forced to adapt or paused during the last twelve months are starting to find a sense of normality with the likes of American Idol bringing back audiences, Survivor finally getting back into production and American Ninja Warrior returning to its traditional summer time slot.
There is also a widespread sense of optimism that the next twelve months will be buoyant for the business – the “roaring ‘20s of non-scripted” as one buyer called it – with the pandemic having an encouraging impact on development that will see some wild and noisy ideas emerge.
Deadline has spoken to close to 50 senior buyers and sellers from across the broadcast,...

Univision continues to shine this summer, leading Wednesday night’s broadcast ratings delivering a 0.5 in the adults 18-49 demographic with Te Doy La Vida, Médicos (0.4, 1.39M) and Como Tú No Hay Dos (0.5, 1.42M).
Tough As Nails powered through at CBS, climbing a tenth from last week. The network’s night ended with repeats of The Price Is Right: Big Brother Edition and Seal Team.
ABC sandwiched reruns of The Goldbergs, The Conners and American Housewife between the latest episode of United We Fall, which held steady in the demo and was the night’s most-watched program, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (0.2, 1.32M), which stumbled in the demo.
At the CW, the night kicked off with a repeat of The 100 and ended with the Bulletproof season finale, which rebounded from its rock-bottom rating last week.

“Tough As Nails” proved on Wednesday night that its title is well earned, at least in ratings terms.
After dipping to a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 for the previous couple episodes, the CBS competition show bounced back up to a 0.5 rating and 3.5 million viewers this time around. Replays of “The Price is Right: Big Brother” and “Seal Team” followed it up with a 0.4 and a 0.3 respectively. The former drew just under 3 million viewers, the latter 2.2 million.
ABC’s comedy “United We Fall” matched “Tough As Nails” to top the night, scoring the exact same numbers in both metrics, which means it was roughly even on last week. However, in less heroic news, “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” ticked down to a 0.2 rating in the 10 p.m. time slot for only the second time in its final season so far. Only 1.3 million viewers tuned in to the Marvel show, which was...

Fox’s “Ultimate Tag” season finale didn’t ultimately win Wednesday night, but at least it stayed steady with last week’s Nielsen ratings. Also just like last week, Univision won primetime in the key demo and NBC repeats averaged the most total viewers. Univision was first in ratings with a 0.5 rating/3 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and fourth in total viewers with an average of 1.5 million, according to preliminary numbers. Also Read: Ratings: The CW's 'Tell Me a Story' Debut Doesn't Have a Fairytale Start NBC, CBS and Fox tied for second in ratings, each with a 0.4 rating. NBC and CBS had 3 shares, Fox got a 2. NBC was first in total viewers with 3.4 million, CBS was second with 2.9 million and Fox was fifth with 1.3 million. NBC aired all reruns last night. Fox is plotting a September bow for mystery-singing competition format The Masked Singer. This comes despite the fact that the show, which entered the Emmys race yesterday, scoring a nomination for Outstanding Competition Program, has not yet begun production.
The network has posted a teaser clip promoting the fourth season, which will air during tonight’s season finale of Ultimate Tag. Watch it here.
Deadline understands the broadcaster is hoping to get the show back in the studio over the next six weeks so it can hit the September deadline, but obviously, as with all things coronavirus-related, the situation remains fluid.

“Masked Singer” fans better reach for their magnifying glasses.
Fox has released the first teaser for the upcoming fourth season of its ratings and social media sensation.
Airing tonight during the season finale of “Ultimate Tag,” the teaser doesn’t offer too many clues, but there are a few scattered around the screen for viewers to find.
A photo of assorted vegetables appears about 10 seconds into the teaser, which must be a clue of some kind, while later on, an image of a baseball glove holding a massive diamond pops up in the background. Make of those what you will.
Then, as judge Ken Jeong states with typical confidence that he knows “exactly who it is,” an assortment of clues appear around him, including a gavel, a purple bowtie, a maple leaf, and the number 11 written twice on a piece of paper. It’s fair to say that those alone...

“Game On!” aired its season 1 finale on Wednesday night to unspectacular numbers, as “United We Fall” remained steady on ABC.
The CBS panel show, which is hosted by Keegan-Michael Key, scored a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49 and drew 2.3 million total viewers with its finale. That’s almost exactly even on the penultimate episode, and represents a tie for its lowest numbers in both metrics. Earlier on, “Tough As Nails” kept on hammering away with a 0.4 rating and 3.5 million viewers, making it even week-to-week. The Eye rounded things off with a “Seal Team” replay, which delivered a 0.3 rating and 1.7 million viewers.
The Will Sasso and Christina Vidal comedy “United We Fall” aired its third episode to a 0.5 rating and 3.7 million pairs of eyeballs, the same scores as for episode 2. Later on, a new episode of the finale season of “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” also came in even at a 0.3 rating and 1.3 million total viewers.

The two-hour premiere episode was followed by a rerun of S.W.A.T, which gave the network a 0.5 average and a share of the demo top spot overall with Univision.

“Game On!,” CBS’ new game show hosted by Keegan-Michael Key and featuring tennis champion Venus Williams and Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski as team captains, dropped to its lowest rating and total viewership so far in its freshman season campaign.
On Wednesday night, the game show scored a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and drew just over 3 million total viewers. That represents a 33% in the former metric and an 8% drop in the latter. The show had been hovering around the 0.6 rating mark earlier in the season. Afterwards, CBS aired reruns of “Seal Team” and “S.W.A.T.,” both of which scored a 0.3 rating and around 2.3 million viewers each.

After a highly promising debut four weeks ago, “Ultimate Tag” sank to its lowest rating and viewership total to date on Wednesday night.
The Fox series tagged in with a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 1.6 million viewers, which represents a decent drop-off from last week’s low of a 0.5 and 1.8 million viewers. It wasn’t exactly helped by a “Masterchef” replay lead-in which served up a 0.3 rating and only 1.4 million viewers.

CBS' Game On was Wednesday's top original show on the broadcast networks, but the night was once again soft across the board. Univision snagged the top spot in the key ad demo across primetime.
Game On posted a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49, up slightly from 0.5 last week, and 3.35 million viewers (off by about 170,000 people week-to-week). That was good enough to lead the handful of original shows on the networks in both measures, though a rerun of NBC's Chicago Med topped broadcast in total viewers with 3.82 million.

Following a slight drop from its series premiere, the new James Corden-inspired CBS show “Game On!” continued to slide on Wednesday night.
Coming in with a 0.5 rating and 3.6 million total viewers, the sports-themed game show was one of the most-watched and highest-rated programs of the night, but still ticked down 17% from last week. In fact no show including the Keegan-Michael Key-hosted competition series managed to get above a 0.5 on the night, as replays of “Seal Team” and “S.W.A.T.” scored a 0.3 and a 0.4 after “Game On!” Both reruns drew around 2.5 million viewers.
Meanwhile over on the CW, “Bulletproof” premiered its second season to a series low audience of 386,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating. For comparison, the first season averaged just under 600,000 pairs of eyeballs. “The 100” continued its final season even week-to-week at a 0.2 rating and 678,000 viewers.
“Marvel’s Agents of Shield” came in even at a 0.3 rating and 1.6 million total viewers for ABC.

The highest-rated show on Wednesday night wasn’t a TV show, but a rather sweet animated movie called “Up.” Many of you may have heard of it?
ABC won the night overall, as the classic 2009 pic scored a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49 and drew 3.4 million total viewers. “Agents of Shield” came in after with a 0.3 rating and 1.5 million viewers, roughly even in both metrics on its seventh and final season premiere.

Wednesday night was a weird one on broadcast television. The highest-rated TV show wasn’t even a TV show — it was an ABC airing of 2009 Disney-Pixar movie “Up.”
The film was enough to carry ABC to a first-place finish among adults 18-49. Everything was out of line in terms of total viewers, however.
ABC was first in ratings with a 0.6 rating/3 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and third in total viewers with an average of 2.8 million, according to preliminary numbers. The team behind Fox’s Ultimate Tag hope that NFL stars JJ Watt and his brothers Tj and Derek fronting a physical competition format will sate viewers missing out on live sports.
It’s certainly a bit louder than live marble racing.
The show, which is based on the playground game of chase or tag, essentially sees regular folk competing against a group of professional taggers, some are parkour experts, to vault, dodge, tumble and dive across a massive course to avoid getting caught. The show launches tonight, Wednesday May 20.
Natalka Znak, who runs the U.S./UK based production company Znak & Co and exec produces the show, alongside JJ Watt and Conrad Green, tells Deadline, “The timing has actually worked out well for us because we’ve got a sporty type show with three footballers hosting it, which is what everyone wants right now because there’s no sports.
