The Ghost Ship
claudio_carvalho17 August 2009
Sam discloses to Dean his unsuccessful meeting with the Crossroad Demon while heading to New York to investigate the mysterious death by drowning of Sheila in the shower. They interview her aunt Gert Case and finds that the young woman had seen a ghost ship before her death. Then they read about another similar case and they find that the other victim had also seen the vessel with his brother, and they decide to protect him and save his life, but they do not succeed in their intent. Meanwhile they find that Bela Talbot is luring Gert to take her money; further Bela discloses that the ghost ship is the "Espírito Santo" and the killer was hanged by the captain a couple of centuries ago, returning every thirty-seven years to kill sinners. They need to retrieve the ghost's hand in the Sea Pines Maritime Museum to end the curse, but the despicable Bela has other intentions.

"Red Sky at Morning" is another funny episode of Supernatural. The crush of Gert Case on Sam is hilarious and the worthless but sexy Bela Talbot is too smart for the Winchester brothers. The humorous situations she causes specially for Dean, and the sexual tension between them, are entertaining. My vote is seven.

I get the hate but I am just gonna say it Bela is a good character
CubsandCulture1 October 2019
That most fans hate this episode and/or Bela is such a granted aspect that the writers' later made it text of the show that this was a bad episode and Bela wasn't a good character. (This opinion becomes canon in season 5). I will grant that Bela episodes, this especially, do have a much different tone than most of the series. The writers never did know quite what to do with her outside of being a vague foil for Dean. As a result the Bela story ends up being ultimately fairly lame. Fortunately, the first couple of episodes with her are not all that serious and I love the character as a comedic foil for Dean. It is also true the plotting in this episode is quite contrived.

At its core this episode is a screwball comedy. It has all the classic elements of sexual frustration coming out as banter, battle of the sexes, high society etc. It even manages to work in some deconstruction by having Dean acknowledge Bela's objectification of him. It is all delightful to me and funny. The humor is old fashioned-yes it is ultimately misplaced in the overall narrative-but it works well enough here to be hella entertaining.

The ghost story, as well as the clues to Bela's past, is quite engaging. And apart from anything else this episode has some of the finest visual effects and atmospherics on any other on the show.

This is one of my favorite episodes even if yes I get why it is disliked so much.

Nautical references, vengeful ghost.
samgronning8 November 2007
Just watched it and was taken with Bela. She will add much to the series. I have watched and followed most of the horror films and books for many years and the writers of this show are seemingly well versed in the arcane lore. Some of this story line has not seen the light of day since the 30's. Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre would be ecstatic with their use of legends that fit with the story. So many of the writers these days are using graphic novels, not historic reference. Not so with these gentlemen. Either their fathers are helping them out or they are the scholars that writers should be. Commendations and accolades for the episode and the series. I will watch with anticipation for the next adventure.

Sam get's attacked by a cougar
mm-3916 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
10 out of 10. A great story well acted and directed. Sam and Dean battle a cursed object. Humor rules this episode with the following plot devices: Dean takes hits at the expense of his Impala. Bella becomes Sam and Dean's problem. The Bella, Dean rivalry begins, and the sexual tension starts. Sam has sexual tension of his own and takes a hit for the mission, while Dean calls Sam a cougar hound. (the best comic part of the show) Sam reminds the women of her late husband. The show has the usual twist, and different endings. Bella will most definitely return for a later show. I like this show. On a more serious note Sam and Dean are starting to fight with Dean's character flaw of not caring about him self hero mode at the expense of others.

Brilliant, as always
hobbits4eva27 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Well the Supernatural boys have delivered again. Fantastic plot line and as always the writers have outdone themselves! There were some hilarious moments, Deans hyperventilating when he realized the Metallicar was gone, Sam's extreme awkwardness with the widowed old lady and of course Bella who seemed absolutely smitten with Dean in a tux, which we can't really blame her. Bella seems to be taking on a permanent role, which in the beginning I wasn't too happy about but now she has really grown on me. All in all this was another brilliant episode. Suspenseful, edge of the seat entertainment with side splitting snippets of humor just to lighten the mood ! Congrats guys!

A Hand of Glory
zombiehigh188 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Eric Kripke apologized for this episode on season 4's "The Monster at the End of This Book", and you were right man, that one was not good. But don't go too hard on yourself, it still had some pretty moments:

  • I liked the two scenes with the boys in the Impala.

  • Dean hyperventilating over the lost Impala and the "Can I shoot her?"/"Not in public." conversation was hilarious.

  • It was a treat seeing the boys in tuxedos, and Dean's reaction to Bella's complement was cute. "Don't objectify me"

  • The Gert's crush on Sam was hilarious despite being a bit over the top. And I liked his reaction to it.

  • Though, she is becoming overly annoying, We can't but wonder whose blood did Bella spill in her family?

Funny!
candygremlin3 August 2019
I loved this episode! There were many hilarious parts in the episode and the story line was entertaining. I love the actress Lauren Cohan! In this episode, she made the character come alive with her witty banter and her cunning ability to get what she wanted. It is one of the many episodes that I will watch over and over again.

Where's the heart?
PrivateBozz12 December 2007
I'm surprised about the high votes, because I pretty much hated this episode.

I read a lot about how the majority of the fans want Bela out of the show, but I decided to give her a fair chance. And I must say: Sorry, I just can't stand her. Her character annoys me like hell, so much that I have almost a problem watching the scenes she's in.

I liked Jo, because although a bit stereotype, the actress was able to fill that character with some sort of life. Bela doesn't seem like a real person, rather like some kind of farce. She is the perfect example for the current problem of the show: a total lack of heart.

The jokes don't fire right, the dialog is affected, and all the characters seem lifeless.

Please, give me back the show I loved so much. Give me back the grungy on-the-road-feeling, give me back Sam and Dean as human beings, not those zombies you have replaced them with!

Can't stand Bela
hnt_dnl5 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As I'm binging the series, so far, there's something off about Season 3. Apparently, there was a writer's strike that caused the season to be shortened and it shows. The "freak of the week" episodes from the first 2 seasons just felt more interesting to me, while there's something boring about the ones this season. But in particular, so far I'm really not feeling these new recurring female characters, especially this Bela character, played by the chick from The Walking Dead sporting her real English accent. Ironic because the actor who plays John Winchester (also from The Walking Dead) is superb on this series. What is this Bela character? She's a real annoying pest that just feels more in the way of the Winchester boys than a help to them. Sam is a walking encyclopedia of supernatural knowledge and Dean knows a ton, too. I don't believe for a second they couldn't have found out the vital information about the ghost ship without Bela's help. Is it just because the actress is British that the writers feel the need to turn the show into cheesy James Bond knockoff anytime she shows up? Her "witty" barbs and "sexy" glares are so cringe, like she's doing a bad cosplay of a hot Bond girl. She just doesn't fit the vibe of this series. Even if she's somehow ends up important to the plot (she certainly isn't so far), it won't make her character any less obnoxious. I'm pretty sure she'll show up later this season, but hopefully this is the only season she's in. More natural, interesting characters like Meg and Jo from the first 2 seasons were so much better than this try-hard Bela character.
