At the beginning of the episode, Ed Zeddmore mentions a writer's strike. This writer's strike really did happen between November 5th, 2007 and February 12, 2008. Because of this, majority of television shows had shorter seasons during this time, including Supernatural. In fact, a mere two episodes before, Mystery Spot (2008) was actually intended to be the season finale if the strike had not been resolved.
The lead members of the Ghostfacers are Harry Spangler and Ed Zeddmore. These names are inspired by Ghostbusters (1984) characters Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore.
The song playing as the Ghostfacers set up base camp in the Morton House is "Hocus Pocus" by Focus (1971).
This episode and the "Ghostfacers" in particular are a parody of the show Ghost Hunters (2004) on SyFy.
When Harry first runs into Sam and Dean inside the Morton House, he asks if they are the same guys from Texas (albeit in a more colorful manner). The instance in which they are referring to is from Hell House (2006) (season 1, episode 17). Ironically, though, both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are native Texans.
