Hero
Colcatron20 April 2011
Pete Ross returns after nearly a 4 year absence, and unfortunate for him, it's in the weakest episode of the season.

There are so many minor problems with this episode that all add up. The biggest issue is that it's a lousy plot for an episode. Very cheesy plot and very cheesy powers (seriously, does ingested meteor rock now cause CLOTHES to develop super powers as well?). On top of that you have Kara's amnesia story, which just feels dragged out and repetitive at this point. The relationship between Kara and Jimmy always felt forced, but even more so in this episode. It doesn't make sense that they're apparently so tight when if you actually add up all the scenes they've had together, it's probably less than 10 minutes of screen time all season, and before now, they've never even mentioned spending any real time together outside of the handful of scenes earlier in the season.

Pete himself is a problem with this episode too. It's not completely the actor's fault, but some fault has to lie with the fact that he never gave that much personality to his character. "Hero" in a way is a reminder of how wasted Pete was as a character in the past. It also doesn't help that his absence was close to 4 years. If Pete was going to do a guest spot it should have been incorporated in season 4 or 5, or at least saved for something relevant, and not a cheesy filler episode. The single most annoying this in this episode is the overuse of product placement for Stride gum. All shows have product placement, and even Smallvile's product placement in the past has been worked in effectively (from an advertising POV) and subtly (so as not to feel forced and pull you out of the story). Here it is neither. Still to this day if I ever see Stride gum I laugh and remember how cheesy the placement was in Smallville. "Hero" is probably the worst example of product placement I've ever seen.

However the biggest problem with this episode is still that it's a weak story, and another poor portrayal of a pivotal character in Superman's comic history.

Longest Stride Gum Commercial Ever!
Amelia40517 February 2022
I had no idea Stride Gum had a 40-minute long commercial! & the music was by One Republic!

Even the party goers looked bored as all get out. This "episode" was a major miss. Unless Stride Gum & One Republic really get ya going, just skip this one.

Welcome back, Pete Ross
Rcwilkinson12317 March 2008
Memorable Smallville character Pete 'The Boss' Ross is back for an episode that has a silly premise but a story that improves on the premise.

Pete Ross (Sam Jones III) is back in Smallville while on the tour with One Republic. While at the concert, a kryptonite piece of Stride gum causes him to develop a power, which allows him to save Kara. This power causes him to want to share it with the public and use it to help people, rather than living in the shadows like Clark usually lives. Back in town, Pete learns that many things have changed, including Clark's relationship with Lionel and the fact that others know about Clark's secret. However, Lex uses his power as CEO of the Daily Planet to monitor Chloe's computer and turns Pete's compassion for Chloe against him to retrieve an important piece of jewelry related to Kara, who gets closer to Lex in her jaded trust of him.

Looking past the premise, this episode does just enough, due to including undercurrents of the major threads to this season's story, to break it away from most "fillers" that are the 13th episodes of Smallville seasons. A lot of this can be attributed to the return of Pete Ross, a favorite character among fans of the show.

Warning: Spoilers
Oh great, Pete Ross is back. I really missed him! He was such an important character.

Does anyone not know exactly how this episode is going to unfold from the first five minutes before the opening credits? And haven't we already seen almost this same exact episode with Pete Ross before, when he got addicted to kryptonite street racing? Pete Ross is doing kryptonite stuff, he thinks its great, but Clark thinks it's terrible. Pete gets mad, says he's tired of Clark being the only one with powers, tired of living in Clark's shadow. SOUNDS FAMILIAR.

As for the Kara storyline, why are Lana and Clark being so secretive about Kara's history? What's the worst that can happen if they tell her the truth? What's the worst that can happen if they DON'T tell her the truth? Oh, she'll go to Lex and get answers from him. Is everyone on this show an idiot? I mean, really, why can't Kara know? They never give a reason. This is a needless obstacle, and a pointlessly frustrating storyline.

Also, does One Republic play a lot of shows in gum factories?

Decent story, with disappointing results

I was SO excited about Pete coming back, I really expected this episode to be much better than it was.

Instead, it was a story that seemed to have been originally written for a one-off character (perhaps another DC comics alumnus; won't say which one, that would be too much of a spoiler), but altered slightly to allow Pete's return; then altered a lot to make sure that the entire episode revolved around GUM!

I don't mind that there were product placements, they've done that before and it didn't distract from the story much (maybe you roll your eyes for a couple seconds, but this time they were riffing off of the company's slogans).

All in all, this episode had so much potential, completely WASTED. Sam Jones left the show because his character was being wasted; I guess we can say good bye to Pete for good.

What a waste of time with this episode. Super boring. Very very lazy writing trying to place Stripes Gum to this episode. Overall shouldn't be ever show.

Complex

Warning: Spoilers
Aside from Clark's savior complex, there is false unproven accusations of real people in this episode. Clearly the writers want audiences to believe that the person Clark trusts more than anyone, is Lex Luthor. It makes you take a whole new look at superman. People apologize to and thank Clark more than he does to them, though he owes them just as much. Pete's courage is astounding.
