Some years ago, Josh Gad received an out of the blue email from Frank Miller, someone whom he had never met.
The legendary comic creator behind The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City asked Gad, the stage and screen actor who is also the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen movies, if he would be interested in writing a comic book. Miller believed Gad would be good at it.
“I was petrified,” Gad tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t think I was capable of it. Conceptually, I didn’t have a way into it and make personal and create something worthy of people’s time.” He politely replied to Miller and declined his invitation.
In the intervening years, however, Gad found his voice, so to speak. Though Miller is not involved, the actor now has co-written a comic that will be published by indie powerhouse Dark Horse Comics starting June.

At the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia, the Baltic Film sidebar has showcased an impressive range of work from the Baltic states – Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia – including the post-Soviet documentary “The Last Relic” and the 3D fable “Twittering Soul,” the hand-painted animation “The Peasants” and the Estonian oddity of “Spit in My Face.”
A palpable urgency can be felt as these former Soviet countries find themselves once more quite literally on the frontline between Europe and Russia and seek to affirm more keenly their own identity.
Leading the way this year has been “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood,” an intimate documentary of women ridding themselves of their demons in the smoke sauna of the title. Having picked up prizes in Sundance and now Tallinn, the film is heading into the Oscar race as Estonia’s nominee and is in the running in the documentary category also.

Dima (Jamie Day) and Kostas (Bruce Ross) in The Writer. Romas Zabarauskas: 'I believe that we cannot allow ourselves to isolate. And these isolationist tendencies are happening on both sides of the political spectrum' Lithuanian director Romas Zabarauskas’ The Writer sees two former lovers Kostas (Bruce Ross) and Dima (Jamie Day) reconnect over the course of a day and night after an absence of 30 years. The film reveals their relationship history but also explores more philosophical and political questions about left and right, conflict and gender identity. We caught up with Zabarauskas at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival - where the film is in the Baltic Film Competition - to talk about its themes.
You’re still quite young but you’ve chosen older characters to work with in this film, can you tell us a bit about that?

Developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Game Studios, the video game Alan Wake begins with the narrator quoting a line that was written by Stephen King – and during an interview with Eurogamer, Remedy boss Sam Lake revealed that King only charged them $1 to use that line.
In case you’re not familiar with Alan Wake (as I wasn’t before seeing the article on the Eurogamer website), Eurogamer provides the information: Alan Wake begins with a sequence where we see the title character driving through the lonely countryside, over which we hear him deliver the following lines: “Stephen King once wrote that ‘Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.’ In a horror story, the victim keeps asking ‘Why?’ But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be one. The unanswered...

When the original Layers of Fear was released back in 2016, the survival-horror genre was in a dire position. Sure you had games like Amnesia and Outlast carrying the torch of horror in the indie scene, but you saw most publishers shy away from the genre as a whole in a post Resident Evil 6 world. This was upended when Konami revealed that none other than Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and director Guillermo del Toro were collaborating on a brand new Silent Hill game, which was revealed with a playable teaser called P.T. That game never saw the light of day but ideas and concepts in the teaser helped inspire Bloober Team to create Layers of Fear, a moody and atmospheric horror game that focuses less on outrunning enemies and more on telling the story of one man’s descent into madness as he struggles to create his magnum opus.

Understandably, Bloober Team’s upcoming Layers of Fear is getting overshadowed by the developer’s other big project in some fans’ eyes. It’s then probably a good idea that Bloober Team has released a new walkthrough video showing off the new mechanics and visual upgrades for Layers of Fear.
Featuring the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear 2, as well as all of the DLCs (including a new chapter entitled “The Final Note” that provides an alternate perspective on the first game’s storyline), the game will also introduce the never-before-told story of The Writer, which aims to tie each entry in the series together.
Bloober Team refers to Layers of Fear as a “tribute” to the fans of the series. “The game has shaped the way in which we strive to make the best horror experiences possible, and we’re hopeful that our community will enjoy what we...

Breaking into the world of filmmaking is never an easy prospect.
And when you are a queer filmmaker who wants to focus on LGBTQ subjects, and lives in a traditional, Catholic, former Soviet Eastern European country, the bar to success is set pretty high.
Romas Zabarauskas’ career proves that with grit, determination — and, as he says, “no bitterness” — it is possible to create your own path on the international stage.
The 32-year-old producer and director — currently in production of his first English-language feature, “The Writer,” the second in a trilogy of films examining gay relationships — says being in the public spotlight as a queer filmmaker is a “complex issue.”
“In Lithuania, the reality of my country is complex; on the one hand, here I am engaged to my fiancé Kornelijus, but we cannot get married because Lithuania does not recognize same-sex partnerships, but on the other hand, I am here...

The Affair Season 5 Episode 11
“When the shit hits the fan, we show up.”
Some series finales tend to take a more humble and understated approach as they go gently into the night. The Affair series finale is a final installment that’s big in as many ways as possible. Not only is this a 90-minute offering, but it begins in a grandiose way with a quote from Richard Wilbur's poem, "The Writer." This is an eerily perfect quotation to utilize in regards to The Affair's finale.
"The Writer" is a poem about a father who wishes his daughter good luck, but beyond its surface level it's actually about the difficulties and challenges of being a writer. The...
