Jasmine Cephas Jones posted a heartfelt tribute to her father, Ron Cephas Jones, to Instagram on Wednesday. The actor passed away earlier this month.
“Grief. This one is a battle. I keep looking at my phone wanting to call you and wanting to hear your voice,” Jones wrote. “You listened… you Really listened to me. You valued my opinion and you never judged me. We all know you were a great actor but my god you were a damn good father.”
The two made history at the 2020 Emmy Awards when they both took home prizes, Jasmine for her role in #FreeRayShawn and Ron for his guest appearance on This Is Us.

After just one season that aired late last year, Showtime has already made the decision to cancel the horror series “Let the Right One In,” Deadline is reporting this afternoon.
Tomorrow Studios, Deadline notes, will be shopping the series to other platforms. In other words, “Let the Right One In” could eventually come back to life on another platform.
Deadline adds to the story, “Paramount Global just announced that Showtime will be integrated into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear later this year.”
“Let the Right One In” is a victim of this impending merger, the site notes.
A new adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, which became Swedish movie Let the Right One In in 2008 and then American remake Let Me In a couple years later, Showtime‘s “Let the Right One In” began streaming in time for Halloween on Friday, October 7, 2022.

For an actor, landing a role on a TV series provides steady work in a business in which employment is usually uncertain. If that show becomes a hit, then all bets are off, with the gig escalating to something more akin to winning the lottery thanks to instant celebrity and an often giant salary. Of course, the odds of being cast in a hit TV series can be just as improbable as hitting the jackpot, which is why it can seem puzzling when a star decides walk away from a hit show. Sometimes, it's because an actor has been fired for whatever reason, but on other occasions, the exit comes at the behest of the star, who makes the risky decision to leave a sure thing for an unknown future. For viewers who earn in a year what a TV star rakes in for one episode, this can cause head-scratching,...

Exclusive: Blumhouse and Miramax’s Dracula film Mina Harker isn’t happening, Deadline has learned.
Originally, Blindspotting actress and #FreeRayshawn Emmy winner Jasmine Cephas Jones was set to headline Karyn Kusama’s Mina Harker, with cameras set to roll in three weeks.
However, the production isn’t moving forward, and sources say Miramax exited over creative differences with the filmmaker. The crew was informed hours ago.
The movie was to be set in contemporary Los Angeles, centering on protagonist Mina Harker, who plays opposite Dracula in the movie, with the classic Bram Stoker protagonist going by the name of Vladimir in the film. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi penned the script that is based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula; both writers are frequent collaborators of Kusama.
Kusama was producing the movie with Jason Blum, Hay, Manfredi and Miramax’s Bill Block. Bea Sequeira was EP and had been set to oversee the film for Blumhouse.

Beloved “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actor and comic J.B. Smoove won his first-ever Emmy Award this year thanks to his work on a short-form comedy from the long-defunct streaming platform Quibi.
Smoove was honored with Best Actor in a Short-Form Comedy or Drama Series for his performance on “Mapleworth Murders,” one of the Quibi shows that has since moved to Roku after the failed network dissolved. It marked the only Emmy Award given to Quibi at the 2021 Creative Arts Emmys ceremony. Overall, the former streamer earned three total Emmy Awards in its short lifespan, all for acting.
“You know, you almost wish it was longer. I almost wish it was longer, but in wishing it was longer, is it as effective?” Smoove previously told Gold Derby. “This right here, it’s very calculated, very precise in the joke writing, very precise in their performances, which resonates more with you and you remember more.

One of the most unusual quirks of this year’s Emmy nominations was the fact that Quibi managed to land eight of them — quite a feat, given that the streamer doesn’t actually exist anymore.
Quibi shut down in December, less than a year after its much-heralded launch. The Jeffrey Katzenberg-Meg Whitman startup and its promise of delivering “quick bite” content to users exclusively on their phones became a bit of a punchline in the industry. But the programming itself was rather solid, attracting top Hollywood producers and stars. Clearly TV Academy voters found it Emmy-worthy: Last year, Quibi won two Emmys (for “#FreeRayshawn”).
This year’s three nominated Quibi shows — “Die Hart,” “Mapleworth Murders” and “Reno 911!” — live on via Roku, which acquired the Quibi programming slate earlier this year for its Roku Channel. Here’s the awkward thing: The Television Academy still lists the network for those shows as Quibi,...

Reno 911!, Die Hart and Mapleworth Murders, which all began as original series on the ill-starred Quibi and now stream as Roku Originals, collected a total of eight Emmy nominations.
The tally was higher than seasoned Emmy regulars like Showtime and Paramount+ (née CBS All Access), which had six apiece. Fox, with seven, also had fewer, though the pool is different for short-form fare.
Die Hart, which Roku has renewed for a second season, stars Kevin Hart as a comedian looking to break through as an action movie star. It scored acting noms for Hart, John Travolta and Nathalie Emmanuel.
Reno 911!, the long-running Comedy Central spoof that was rebooted by Quibi, was recognized in two categories. It is up for Short Form Comedy, Drama Or Variety Series as well as Kerri Kenney-Silver’s performance as Deputy Trudy Wiegel.

A year after his surprising Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy victory for “This Is Us” — complete with a wrong winner announcement — Ron Cephas Jones will not be back to defend his crown. The actor was eligible to return for his guest appearance on the NBC tearjerker last season, but he is Mia on the nominating ballots released on Thursday.
Jones’ absence has significant impact on the race. Had he submitted, he would’ve been in the contention to win a record-breaking third drama guest actor statuette. He’s currently in a four-way tie with Charles S. Dutton, John Lithgow and Patrick McGoohan. Jones’ upset win last year — he was in last place in fifth place in the odds — made him the first person to win the category twice for the same role. He took him his first award for his performance as William, Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) birth father,...

Now that Quibi ended up lasting, well, a Quibi, the Emmy Awards’ short form categories seem further destined to become more of a curiosity than a major part of the competition. Roku picked up Quibi’s scraps, but doesn’t appear interested in launching new originals in the short-form space. And elsewhere, outlets including YouTube are bulking up in unscripted, but are less keen on adding more scripted, short form or not, to an already crowded marketplace.
The Television Academy first expanded the short form categories in 2016, buoyed by the promise of original fare from Maker Studios, Fullscreen, AwesomenessTV, YouTube Red, Adult Swim and others. Maker and Fullscreen basically don’t exist anymore, and the excitement of the short form races has perhaps further cooled after the Quibi debacle.
But although the Quibi business model was questionable, its programming wasn’t. The service premiered quite a bit of quality fare in its short life,...

“Black-ish” has quietly been a player at the Emmys in one form or another since it premiered in 2014. Star Anthony Anderson was nominated for the first season, followed by three consecutive years of him, Tracee Ellis Ross and the series all landing nominations. The ABC sitcom was then dropped from Best Comedy Series for its fifth and sixth seasons the past two years, but Anderson has accumulated six consecutive bids in Best Comedy Actor while Ross has four in Best Comedy Actress, with additional mentions for guest acting, costumes and hairstyling along the way. Now, after wrapping its seventh season, “Black-ish” is in a solid position to return to the Best Comedy Series lineup and pull off a comeback like few other shows have done at the Emmys.
Generally speaking, when Emmy voters decide a show is no longer worthy of the top category, they are done with it for good.

Quibi is coming back from the dead next week… sort of.
On May 20, Roku will debut the first batch of Roku Originals — a collection of 30 shows originally produced for Quibi, the short-lived mobile entertainment startup led by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman. Roku paid substantially less than $100 million for the assets of the defunct company, including rights to more than 75 shows overall.
The shows span genres and formats, comprising scripted series, documentaries, alternative and reality programming. Among the first “Roku Originals” coming next week are Kevin Hart’s action series “Die Hart,” Emmy-winning drama “#FreeRayshawn” starring Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas Jones, the revival of Comedy Central’s “Reno 911!” and “Dummy,” starring Anna Kendrick as a woman who befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll.
The lineup also includes “Chrissy’s Court,” a “Judge Judy”-style show starring Chrissy Teigen; a reboot of MTV’s “Punk’d” hosted by Chance the Rapper...

A raft of 30 original shows developed for — and briefly distributed by — now-defunct streaming startup Quibi are getting new life as Roku Originals, with a premiere date of May 20.
The shows, which include Emmy winner #FreeRayshawn as well as series starring Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen, Anna Kendrick, Chance the Rapper and more, will be available on the Roku Channel. (See the full list below.) The remaining titles from the full roster of 75 titles will go live on Roku by the end of 2021.
The free, ad-supported Roku Channel offers 190 live, linear channels and 40,000 movie and TV titles, to viewers beyond Roku’s sizable base of connected devices and smart TVs. Unlike the subscription model of Quibi, the originals will be available for free. Limited advertising will be shown in between the seven- to 10-minute episodes.

Roku presented its first original programming slate to media buyers at the NewFronts, showcasing programming acquired in separate deals with Quibi and This Old House.
In a 30-minute virtual pitch, the streaming provider noted the median age of its viewers is 39 (compared with 60-plus for the broadcast networks), and they are less tethered to the traditional cord. About 57% of Roku users have no pay-tv subscription, but many of them are willing to pay for SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+.
This “streaming-first audience is unreachable on linear TV,” said Julian Mintz, Roku’s national brand sales lead.
Roku Originals include a number of the shows that had a brief run on the now-defunct Quibi. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile-focused subscription streaming outlet fizzled last fall, after burning through most of its $1.75 billion in start-up capital. Not surprisingly, no mention was made in the presentation that shows like Dummy, Survive and The Fugitive...

Roku is officially dropping the Quibi name.
Roku announced that the content from its January acquisition of Quibi — the short-lived, short-form mobile entertainment startup founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg — will be rebranded as “Roku Originals.” The 75-plus original shows from Quibi will be available to watch for free on the ad-supported Roku Channel starting sometime this year, the company has said.
Roku Originals also will be the brand name for future original programming for The Roku Channel, which is currently available in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. The company said it will provide additional details next month about the launch of Roku Originals.

Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.
It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. Quibi’s #FreeRayshawn, written by Marc Maurino, captured the Writers Guild Award for Original & Adapted Short Form New Media.
The victory had a much different feel from last September, when the show won two Creative Arts Emmys in a breakthrough for the startup, which earned 10 Emmy nominations. A month after that bright spot, Quibi said it was shutting down after failing to gain traction during Covid-19 and burning through most of its $1.75 billion in funding. In January of this year, Roku announced it had acquired Quibi’s library, which plans to start streaming it later in 2021.

The 73rd Writers Guild Awards is underway in a virtual ceremony, honoring the best in original and adapted screenplay and documentary, TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing.
For the first time, in recent history, the awards ceremonies for both WGA West and WGA East will be in lock step as both have been merged tonight in one live stream. Typically, two ceremonies are held separately in both L.A. and NYC at the same time, with both reading off winners at separate times. Quite often, the NY awards ceremony will get ahead of LA’s and announce winners, completely spoiling the suspense for anyone in the Beverly Hilton ballroom.
Tonight’s host Kal Penn, clad in a satin purple tux jacket, was live from what looked to be his home. The Harold & Kumar actor mentioned that he just became a WGA member.

The 73rd Writers Guild of America Awards took place on Sunday (March 21) in simultaneous non-televised ceremonies held in Los Angeles and New York. The WGA was the first of the guilds to be heard from in this extra-long Oscar season. But don’t look to these results for any clarity on the screenplay races at the Academy Awards.
The stringent rules of the WGA prohibit non-guild members from competing. This year, three of the 10 scripts nominated by the writers branch of the academy were deemed ineligible here: the adapted screenplays of “The Father” and “Nomadland” (which we predict will win the Oscar) and the original screenplay for “Minari.”
The guild did align with the academy three-for-five in Best Adapted Screenplay, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees. Our...
