- During the opening narration, Maria Jackson explains her new life on Bannerman Road, having saved the world recently from an alien invasion with her friends, Sarah Jane Smith, and Luke Smith, Sarah Jane's newly adopted son and former Archetype for the Bane. School starts for Maria and Luke at Park Vale Comprehensive, and both Sarah Jane and Luke struggle to not be awkward when she drops him off, making the other kids laugh when Sarah Jane kisses him goodbye. Luke tells Maria that Sarah Jane said she does not want him to call her 'mum', which Maria is skeptical about. She tries to explain when they spot a brand new tech building for the school. Somewhere hidden inside, a portly man watches on a screen as another overweight man, Mr. Jeffrey, comes in to teach, deeming him "perfect". He takes Jeffrey to stand next to a blank wall, which slides open as a huge clawed hand kills him.
At the first day assembly, a boy sits down next to Maria and Luke and introduces himself as Clyde Langer. He offers to hang out with them, though he is soon skeptical after Luke is overly formal and shows no social intelligence. The headmaster of the school, the man from earlier, is disinterested and flippant in his speech to the assembly, and is soon joined by Mr. Jeffrey. Strangely, the headmaster keeps passing gas, the humor of which also escapes Luke. After the headmaster takes the class on a tour of the impressive new tech building, Clyde finds Maria in the cafeteria for lunch. Like her, his parents have also split up, and he moved with his mother to the area recently. They both find their food to be rotten, something the headmaster seems unconcerned about, and Clyde comments about the strange metallic smell in the new block as well. As the first day draws to a close, Sarah Jane drives Maria and Luke home. Sarah Jane observes Maria and her father's close relationship and casual banter, and asks Alan about the new block at school. Alan tells her he worked on an identical building for another school, which similar issues. Meanwhile in the secret control room at school, the headmaster and Jeffrey are preparing a grand experiment. Luke tells Sarah Jane about his numerous social mistakes at school and how he feels he will never fit in, but she tells him they will both adjust eventually. To take his mind off things, she shows him her research about Coldfire Contruction, the company building all of the new tech buildings around London. At Maria's house, her mother Chrissie comes over to visit, while the two teachers throw a switch and suddenly the power goes out across London. Strangely, the power is also drained from flashlights, candles, and even Sarah Jane's scanner watch. Jeffrey and the headmaster are pleased as first, but the equipment starts to overload and they race to turn it off, which brings pack power and light. They promise to find a way to fix the machine and destroy the entire planet when they do.
The next morning, Sarah Jane asks Alan about his contracting job building one of the Coldfire Tech buildings, and he is able to provide her with blueprints detailing an unexplained empty space. At science class, Luke demonstrates his prodigious knowledge on the subject, which gets the attention of Jeffrey, who is halfheartedly teaching the class. Jeffrey becomes fearful when he finds out Clyde has snuck in a homemade sandwich rather than eat the rotten cafeteria food, and quickly confiscates it. Sarah Jane goes to another school that has had a new tech building installed, and the headmistress tells her about identical problems as at Park Vale. Someone watches the conversation on the security camera.
Mr. Jeffrey tells the headmaster about Luke, and they decide to use him to fix their machinery. Luke has signed up for Jeffrey's lunch hour science club, the only other member of which is a bullied boy named Carl. Jeffrey shows them the model for the "theoretical" capacitor, and Luke quickly recognizes it and finds a work around for the storage problem. After school, Sarah Jane decides to visit Coldfire Construction Headquarters while Maria and Luke split up to investigate the new block. Clyde tags along with Luke and asks questions about the strange pair, but Luke is distracted buy the odd layout of the building, concluding that it is hiding a secret room somewhere. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane is meeting with the only spokesperson at Coldfire, a large woman named Janine, and confronts her about the strange happenings at schools across the world. Janine threatens Sarah Jane to stop writing her story, when she refuses, Janine unzips her forehead and sheds her skin to reveal a giant green clawed alien, a Slitheen. At school, Mr. Jeffry finds Maria and sheds his skin as well. Clyde leaves as Luke finds the entrance to the secret room, and catches up with Maria as she runs from the Slitheen Jeffrey. She and Clyde hide, but are beckoned into a classroom by Carl. Upstairs, Luke has found the way in to the secret control room. He finds it filled with alien technology, but is confronted by the headmaster. Carl takes Clyde and Maria to a back classroom, however it is not an escape route, but a trap, as he also unzips his skin to reveal a bloodthirsty Slitheen child.
