Horrible awards show! If the quality stays like that, it's best to end it there. Warning: Spoilers
The title "2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards" is pretty telling here and at the same time it is still slightly new (maybe clumsy) with the inclusion of television that was added not too long ago to the MTV Movie Awards, but I must say that pretty much all the small screen awards felt rather forgettable, be it because of the formats that won (or were only nominated) or the people who triumphed. Some categories also had really stupid names, but that is nothing new for the MTV Movie Awards. This awards show is not even a year old as of today and ran for slightly over 80 minutes, but if we add commercials and advertizing breaks, they extended it to two hours apparently. That is one third basically. Shameful stuff. At least, the host Zachari Levy mentioned this running time early on. I thought he was a really bad host, so i was not mad at all that he was barely a part of the show anymore at some point. He disappointed me for sure, not only because I am a big "Tangled" fan. Of course, he also pushed his (then) new superhero movie, but after seeing him in here, I have almost zero interest to check that one out. But he was far from the only failure of the show, hich is pretty disappointing because director Joel Gallen is an Emmy winner and there were so many writers in charge here, including head writer David Ferguson, who is also an Emmy nominee. But the outcome here is clearly the epitome of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Just a few examples: It is linked to television and movie, so if you already include 2-3 music numbers, then pick studd from soundtracks, pick movie songs, pick maybe intro songs from TV shows etc. Do not just randomly pick commercially successful songs, especially if those are as shallow and forgettable as the ones in here. This was just one of many areas where they apparently wanted to make 100% sure that no Black audiences would complain about "their own" being shut out. I mean diversity is a good thing, but at some point, this almost felt like the Black Guilt Awards 2019. The only thing missing was a Black host, but yeah, like I said, Levi was barely in this anymore and made room for everybody else. So yeah, pick whatever you like (or dislike), but Lizzo's performance, the anti-R.Kelly scenes, Moore, Cannon, Thompson, Latifah, Haddish, Keys etc. were perhaps a bit much. The real moment when it all hit rock bottom, however, was Jada Pinkett Smith winning something like a Lifetime Achievement Award was truly an abomination. No words for that. You can probably somehow justify one for her husband with how long he has been in the industry and also with how younger audiences (i.e. the MTV target group) still really like him despite being in his 50s now already too, but giving one to his wife? Come on. Utter fear I say because of the power she and her husband have. I guess they picked her because they also wanted to get in the female component because, you know, right now it is the politically correct thing to do. They sure had to take #metoo into consideration. They also did so with the R. Kelly documentary award I mentioned already and of course the recipient was (almost) crying. Well, so am I because of what happened will keep us from getting many more beautiful songs from this utterly talented singer.

Okay, what else can I say. In terms of political messages, this show was clearly on the same level as the Oscars, maybe even more try-hard. There were more cringeworthy moments, like when Haley Lu Richardson (actually really attractive, oh know I reduced her to her physicality! how mean and all this because she did not even put any makeup on to appear attractive!) said how much she appreciates that in one particular category, there are only female nominees. Sad stuff somehow to see them all approve, especially beacue Shipka and Moss are two actresses (have they removed the "I am an actor" part for females already from the SAGs by the way?) I like and it's nice to see them get appreciation for their new projects after "Mad Men". Besides, now I know why many people say they don't find Gal Gadot attractive at all. Yeah, as for the show, it was also severely unfunny. Even those parody parts that usually almost always worked with the MTV Movie Awards they messed up and for example the "Us" sequence is not half as funny as it could have been, although you could feel how all these writers tried so hard to make it entertaining. Again, Levi fails there. By the way, he was not the only Levi (or Levy, actually) being part of the show, but Dan was about the same level and it's pretty embarrassing to see how he acts so humble while he in fact could not copy his dad's style any more. Pretty sure he'd never have a career without his father and he does not possess 10% of the talent his old man has. I cannot say too much about the winners here. The biggest category of the night went to the Avengers movie, which is alright, also because how it was funny to watch how the audience was really cold on that decision because it was not the teenage favorite that won several awards before ("To All the Boys I've Loved Before"), also for Noah Centineo and he was so cringeworthy with how he sat down on the stage and then got up to give us his pseudo important speech about ho he does not care one bit about the fame and money (yeh, right!), but only about doing what he loves. Well, let me tell you: I sure don't love seeing him do what he loves. I actually struggle with calling it "acting". Anyway, what I wanted to say was that the young people wanted his film to win and many others wanted one of the Black-themed films to win ("Us", "BlacKkKlansman", maybe Spidey even counts as a 0.5 Black film), but the award went to another movie. Admittedly, those I just mentioned would not have been entirely undeserving either, except the Centineo film probably. In general, I felt this show was really packed with people that are extremely overrated, especially in terms of the big stars like The Rock, Downey Jr. and Bullock. They had to give her an award if she shows up right. This is also where my general award show criticism applies. It is okay if they only had minimally over 80 minutes time, but it is not okay that they omit crucial categories like basicallythe one for the best acting performance (or whatever it is called). Lady Gaga took it (what a travesty over Malek) and apparently she was not there, so they simply actes as if the category did not exist, not even announced her quickly before or after a commercial break. Or maybe I just overlooked it. I cannot rule out such a possibility because literally this show was making me really tired. This is also why I think the only scenarion in which you yould want to watch it is to cure your insomnia. Yes, it was that bad. Even the slightly better moments, like Aubrey Plaza's little comedy routine with David Spade was overshadowed in a negative sense by the two shamelessly promoting each other's next show/movie. No, guys, it does not make it any better if you don't promote your own projects. It still feels needy. Nanjiani was also not 10% as funny as in his movie and that seems to be a recurring event. He has been in quite a few awards show recently and messed up almost every time and it feels almost always the same, which is pretty shocking because he definitely has more comedic training than 99% of the people in the room. Not even Bautista could save him. Okay folks, time to finish. Like I said in the title of my review: I think that as long as they won't clearly improve almost every aspect of this show, maybe it is better if it's not gonna take place anymore in the future. One nice way could have been to have award winner be a part of the show. I mean he could not have saved this mess, but at least made it worth watching for two minutes. Then again, I can see why really established talents do not want to be associated with garbage like this. Instead we get Dan Levy winning awards. Sigh. There's a reason the likes of him are there to accept. Shameful stuff that gives MTV a bad name, especially looking at how good they once were. Now they have really hit rock bottom, also with their program in general, but this show proves it as well. Highly not recommended. And don't even get me started on Ruth Bader Ginsberg being nominated for Best Fight for her fight against injustice. Are you kidding me? The cringe is real. Of course, they made sure she won at least another award as she and injustice came short in said category. But hey, once Trump is reelected, I am sure the injustice will even be bigger (according to them) and they can wholeheartedly give her the award. Can't put into words how disgusted I am by this whole travesty.
