Enid Blyton’s iconic series of adventure novels, “The Famous Five,” is being made into a TV series, thanks to a pact forged by the BBC Studios, Germany’s Zdf and Spain’s The Mediapro Studio, in the latter’s continued bid to partner in more English-language productions.
Produced by Moonage Pictures and Nicolas Winding Refn’s byNWR, the series is an ambitious adaptation of the iconic children’s adventure novels by the English author.
Said The Mediapro Studio CEO Laura Fernández Espeso: “This significant agreement with BBC Studios to co-produce forward ‘The Famous Five’ aligns seamlessly with our objective of augmenting English-language content production at the company.”
“It not only contributes to our international expansion but also solidifies a partnership with an exceptionally prestigious collaborator, engaging in a major production inspired by a literary saga of immense global acclaim,” she added. The Mediapro Studio will hold distribution rights to Spain,...

“Kensday” may soon be everyday. “Community” star and “The Masked Singer” panelist Ken Jeong is eyeing a daytime talk strip for 2024, to be developed and produced by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury shingle. Jeong will executive produce with Jim Biederman (“The Kids in the Hall,” “The Howard Stern Radio Show.”
“Ken is one of a handful of people in the world who has what it takes to succeed as a talk show host and we are excited to be in business with him,” Debmar-Mercury co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a joint statement. “”Audiences connect with Ken on many levels – not only because is he so talented, entertaining and unapologetically hilarious but their sense that he is sincere, compassionate, fearless, friendly, just genuinely nice – all essential ingredients that make for long-term success as a talk show host. Ken Jeong is setting his sights on daytime television.
The actor, comedian and Masked Singer panelist is developing a syndicated talk show with Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury (Sherri), with an eye toward a 2024 premiere. Jeong will also executive produce alongside Jim Biederman, a veteran producer of talk and sketch comedy shows (The Howard Stern Radio Show, Kids in the Hall and others).
The show will be produced under SAG-AFTRA’s so-called Network Code, a different contract than the one that actors are currently striking. The Network Code governs talk shows, variety shows and other unscripted programs.

The Kill Room, a dark comedy crime thriller from director Nicol Paone, is set to reach theatres on September 29th, courtesy of Shout! Studios – and with that date less than two months away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Jonathan Jacobson, The Kill Room has the following synopsis: Patrice Capullo has a big problem: her art gallery isn’t making money. Gordon has an even bigger problem, while arranging hits for the mob is lucrative, he & his ”colleague” Reggie need a better way to launder their money. A chance introduction from Patrice’s drug dealer has the art world meet the underworld, and a plan is hatched. The one hitch: Patrice needs something to sell. With that, Reggie taps into his inner artist and makes a painting which immediately “sells” for an incredibly high price. When the...

Bet you weren’t expecting the eyebrow-raising TV news of the day to involve a new adaptation of beloved children’s author Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series. But the surprising twist in the BBC’s announcement today didn’t concern the bestselling series of whimsical, jolly-hockey-sticks children’s adventure novels from the 1940s-1960s – rather the creator behind this new series: Nicolas Winding Refn.
Considering this Danish director is famous for stylish but graphically violent films like The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives and Drive, The Famous Five will be somewhat of a left turn for him.
The series will have three 90-minute episodes drawing on Blyton’s 21 Famous Five novels, which detailed the adventures of five daring young explorers – Julian, Dick, Anne, George and their dog Timmy – as they spend their school holidays gallivanting around the English countryside and coastline, solving mysteries, finding treasure and catching criminals. It’s safe to say that no one saw this one coming. Danish enfant terrible Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive, The Neon Demon and the Pusher trilogy, has been tapped to reboot The Famous Five, based on Enid Blyton’s classic series of children’s books.
Blyton wrote 21 books on the adventures of the group of four children — Julian, Dick, Anne and George, along with their dog Timmy — beginning with Five on a Treasure Island, first published in 1942. The books have been adapted for television multiple times.
Refn will act as creator and producer on a new The Famous Five limited series adaptation, which has begun filming across the southwest of the U.K. The Danish director is executive producing through his byNWR Originals company together with BBC Studios-backed Moonage Pictures (Amazon Prime’s The Pursuit of Love) for the BBC and German public broadcaster Zdf. “Shrek 5” could be on its way very soon.
Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed the exciting news during a chat with Variety ahead of the release of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
Meledandri, who also serves as a creative partner to DreamWorks Animation, said there had been early talks with the film’s original voice cast; which includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy.
Meledandri shared, “It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario’, where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements.
“And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”

Thanks to "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and its remarkable box office run, the "Shrek"-verse is suddenly looking more alive than it has in more than a decade. Rest assured, this hasn't gone unnoticed by DreamWorks Animation, which is already well into development on "Shrek 5" -- a project we've been hearing rumblings about since at least 2017, back when the sequel's then-writer Michael McMullers ("The Boss Baby") referred to it as a "pretty big reinvention" of what's come before.
During an interview with Variety, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri -- who's also a creative partner at DreamWorks Animation -- confirmed the intention is to bring back Mike Myers as the voice of the titular lovable, smelly ogre for the as-yet-untitled new "Shrek" movie, along with his co-stars Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy as Fiona and Donkey, respectively. Although Meledandri cautioned that "talks are starting now" with the original "Shrek" cast,...

It's fair to say that Mike Myers has struggled to find an audience in recent years. If 2022's "The Pentaverate" is anything to go by, relevancy isn't exactly Myers' strong point. Not that his Netflix series was without its charms, it's just the Canadian had a major moment in the '90s when his farcical shenanigans went over much better than they do today. In fact, Myers had a legendary run during that decade, making arguably the most successful "Saturday Night Live" spin-off franchise with "Wayne's World" and going on to create a cultural phenomenon with his spy spoof "Austin Powers."
The 1997 comedy remains one of my personal favorites simply because it's unapologetically ridiculous and over-the-top in its skewering of my homeland's pop cultural history. The "Austin Powers" films most obviously parodies James Bond, but Myers, who was raised by Liverpudlian parents in Toronto, takes his cues from a wide...

Before Canadian actor Mike Myers was yelling "Yeah, baby" through fake teeth or battling (and playing) Dr. Evil in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" and its sequels, he was a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" from 1989-1995. Myers created unforgettable characters like the strongly-accented Linda Richman from "Coffee Talk," the severe Dieter, host of the German dance show "Sprockets," the basement-dwelling Wayne Campbell, who later headed the movie "Wayne's World," and the angry Scottish man Stuart Rankin, owner of the fictional store "All Things Scottish."
In addition to his memorable creations, Myers has recently appeared in David O. Russell's "Amsterdam" and played almost every character in the Netflix original series "The Pentaverate." "SNL" was where we got to know him, though, and it turns out that getting on the show was important to Myers because of original "SNL" cast member Gilda Radner.

Over his decades-spanning career, Mike Myers has crafted some of comedy's most memorable characters. You might know him most fondly as the headbanging hero Wayne of "Wayne's World," whether on "Saturday Night Live" during his '89-'95 tenure or in the celebrated movie adaptations. Perhaps you recall how he dominated the late '90s as both villain and swinging protagonist in the spy-parodic "Austin Powers" movies, and the subsequent inability to walk down the street without hearing a poorly-feigned Dr. Evil impression. Maybe ogres are your bag, making Myers' turn as an unrefined Scottish mean green machine Shrek the zenith of his talents. Or perhaps the name is fairly new for emergent comedy fans, the product of stumbling upon the cult-centric laugh-fest "The Pentaverate" on Netflix. Myers' influence on comedy is well-established, but what influences the influencer?

Exclusive: Jax Media’s Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns are leaving Imagine Entertainment where they have been Presidents for the past year.
According to sources, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine exercised their purchase of the remaining 49 of Jax over the holidays, and Hernandez and Burns decided to leave both Imagine and Jax, taking what they have learned from building upstart Jax into a prolific production company known for finding creative ways to efficiently produce high-end content, especially comedy, and start a new company together.
The exit is said to be amicable and the duo will continue to provide producing services on about a dozen Jax/Imagine shows. An Imagine Entertainment President replacement is expected to be announced soon.

Maria Menounos has signed with UTA for representation, Variety has learned exclusively. She will continue to be represented by Kevin Yorn at Yorn Levine and Adam Lilling. The agency will now help Menounos expand her already strong portfolio across television and other areas.
Menounos broke into the TV landscape when she became a correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight” in 2002. She then went on to work for shows like “Access Hollywood” and “NBC Nightly News.” It was during her time at Access Hollywood that she facilitated a sit-down interview with the entire Obama family while Barack Obama was on the campaign trail for his first run at the presidency. Menounos currently hosts Noovie and is frequently a guest host on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
She is also the host of the podcast “Heal Squad x Maria Menounos,” where she speaks with healers, health experts, and celebrities about ways to improve all aspects of one’s life.

With dozens of shows like What We Do in the Shadows and Chucky representing our favorite genre on the small screen, there’s no denying that we’re living through a horror renaissance on television. However, the amount of quality programming being produced is simply staggering, and it’s becoming hard to keep up with all these new releases, especially when we have to keep track of so many different streaming services. That’s why it’s understandable that a few televised gems would slip through our fingers, destined to become lost in a sea of streamable content.
But fear not, because we here at Bloody Disgusting have come up with a handy list of six underseen horror shows to watch during this Halloween season! While none of these were hits on par with a Mike Flanagan production, I firmly believe that they all deserve more fans and are all still worth a watch.

As has been pointed out by many, “Amsterdam” is a star-studded film.
Its cast includes (deep breath) Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldaña, Andrea Riseborough, Rami Malek and Robert De Niro (among others). It’s a lively, spirited historical mystery about World War I and a vast right-wing conspiracy on American shores. But the movie becomes even more electric when two stars appear on screen together: Mike Myers and Michael Shannon.
The two performers play spies who assist our heroes, first in the title city and later in New York, as they attempt to thwart a growing threat to democracy. Their camaraderie is easy, natural and fun. Myers deploys a British accent that is somehow familiar and unlike anything he’s done before. (The closest comparison is probably his cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.”) “Amsterdam” is fun but when Shannon and Myers are on screen,...

They’re two of the funniest Canadian comedians of all time — and in a country that gave us John Candy, Norm MacDonald, Seth Rogen, and Eugene Levy, that’s saying something! Jim Carrey and Mike Myers broke out big thanks to their classic sketch comedy shows before lunging onto the big screen, smashing box office records whether through talking out of their butts or having monkeys fly out of it!
It’s a pleasure to have Myers return to the realm of comedy (outside of a Super Bowl commercial) with the recent television series, The Pentaverate, streaming on Netflix. At the same time, it’s a bit disheartening to hear the news that Jim Carrey will essentially be retired following his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) made history as the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2022 Best Character Voice-Over ballot list below consists of a whopping 222 performances. Seeking a third consecutive victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Netflix’s “Murderville” is angling for major Emmy attention with the streamer submitting the show for consideration in the variety sketch series categories, where it would potentially face-off against the likes of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and reigning champ, “Saturday Night Live.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that the Television Academy deemed the Krister Johnson-developed show a comedy series, where it will now compete with shows such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Ted Lasso” and its streaming counterparts “Cobra Kai” and “The Chair.”
Along with vying for attention for outstanding comedy series, star Will Arnett, who plays the clumsy and hilarious detective Terry Seattle, will submit for lead actor (comedy). Three of the guest detectives have been submitted for guest actor (comedy): Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch and Kumail Nanjiani. While other guest actors Annie Murphy, Sharon Stone and Ken Jeong have not been submitted by Netflix, each has other...

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

“The Afterparty” just got another suspect … or another victim … in the form of Ken Jeong.
Jeong has joined the just-started-filming second season of the Apple TV+ whodunit comedy show as a series regular, TheWrap has learned.
Details about Jeong’s character weren’t provided, but he joins the cast of the sophomore season along with fellow newcomers Elizabeth Perkins, Zach Woods, Paul Walter Hauser, Poppy Liu, Anna Konkle, Jack Whitehall and Vivian Wu. Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao and Tiffany Haddish return from the first season.
Like the inaugural season, this season of “The Afterparty” takes place at a gathering – this time a wedding (speculation suggests its Richardson and Chao’s wedding). Also like the first season, each episode will follow the format of a different movie genre.
Series creator Christopher Miller returns, although this time around he won’t be directing every episode, which is understandable considering how many projects...

Photo: ‘The Pentaverate’ A Tried and True Style Mike Myers built a solid legacy in the 1990s and early 2000s as one of the most influential and recognizable comedy stars in the world after making a name for himself on Saturday Night Live with his cast of outrageous characters. In films like ‘Austin Powers’, ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘So I Married an Axe Murderer’ Myers puts the skills he learned on SNL to work by taking on the roles of multiple characters within the films. This developed and became Myers’ calling card with all of his future projects, including ‘Shrek’ and later the ‘The Love Guru’, where for comedy he plays different parts throughout the films often sharing the screen with himself. Mike Myers’ limited comedic series “The Pentaverate,” about an ancient secret society trying to save the world, didn’t register with Netflix viewers in its first week of streaming, and didn’t make Netflix’s Top 10 Most-Viewed English Language Series chart for the week of May 2-8.
It was the comedian’s first real project since his appearance as a record producer who gives Queen a thumbs down in 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” While The Guardian found the series “sweet, silly [and] charmingly harmless,” many echoed The Daily Beast, who labeled it “embarrassingly bad.” The series costars Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazer and Jennifer Saunders.
Meanwhile the series finale of “Ozark” kept the No. 1 spot globally with 102.1 million minutes viewed, up from last week’s 78.4 million. The first season also made the chart, landing at No. 7 with 13.6 million minutes viewed. It’s now been in the Top 10 for nine weeks.

“The Pentaverate,” Netflix’s limited series starring Mike Myers as eight different characters in a story about five “nice” guys who run the entire world, didn’t make a dent in the streamer’s newly released Top 10 rankings.
It’s a significant flop for Myers, who was a box office darling in the ‘90s and early 2000s for his starring in projects including the “Shrek,” “Austin Powers” and “Wayne’s World” films. But as Variety’s review noted, Myer’s heyday is behind him, and “The Pentaverate” points to “a feature, not a bug” in Netflix’s content strategy of “writ[ing] giant checks to anyone who might bring in more viewers.”
The May 2-8 viewing window marked the first full week of availability for Season 4 of “Ozark,” which remained in the No. 1 position with 102.1 million minutes viewed, up from last week’s 78.4 million. As fans rewatch the series or come to...

Season 4 is being split into two volumes, with four or five episodes premiering May 27 and the remaining entries debuting July 1. Moreover, the creators have promised Season 4 is nearly twice the length of past seasons, featuring thousands of VFX shots spread across more than 800 pages of scripts. No wonder reports have claimed Season 4 cost upwards of 270 million to produce. Heaven, hell, and office romances: real-life couple and comedy duo Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone lead Netflix comedy “God’s Favorite Idiot,” premiering on the streamer June 15.
McCarthy and Falcone co-founded On the Day Productions, and have written and produced films like “Tammy,” “The Boss” and “Life of the Party” together with Falcone directing. Now, the creative partners lead “God’s Favorite Idiot,” which is part “Bruce Almighty” and part workplace comedy.
Falcone stars as unassuming tech support employee Clark Thompson who pines after his co-worker Amily Luck (McCarthy). After being struck by lightning, Clark begins to glow — and not just because his crush is reciprocated. Turns out, Clark is now anointed, and must battle Satan (Leslie Bibb) with the help of Amily.
The eight-episode series also stars Kevin Dunn, Usman Ally, Steve Mallory, Chris Sandiford, Ana Scotney, and Yanic Truesdale. “God’s Favorite Idiot” is Oscar nominee McCarthy’s follow-up TV role...

A remake of "The Graduate" starring Mike Myers: can you picture it? "Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels apparently could. According to Myers, Michaels offered him the starring role in just such a movie, though Myers turned it down and it obviously never came to fruition.

The timing for "The Pentaverate" debut couldn't be worse: it's a bloated Netflix original by an aging white male movie star that in no way justifies its cost. The six-episode series has a wacky premise: a Canadian local-news anchor, Ken Scarborough, is fired for being old and out of touch, leading him to investigate a secret underground organization that pulls society's strings from the shadows, hoping the "big story" will win him his job back. The comedy feels woefully outdated, the premise stupid, and the attempts at diversity forced (at least initially). The jokes are so crass they're uncomfortably unfunny. Generally, the show is all too...

Watching “The Pentaverate” with the purpose of reviewing it gave me enormous sympathy for Wile E. Coyote trying to trap the Roadrunner while knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it would end in him getting flattened. The mission felt doomed from the start, and yet I just kept marching onward through Netflix’s newest comedy starring a comedian whose most relevant and lucrative days are long behind him. Making sense of “The Pentaverate” simply isn’t the point of “The Pentaverate,” which exists to let Mike Myers do whatever he wants almost 15 years after he last starred in a project of his own.
With “The Pentaverate,” which dropped its six episodes on May 5, Myers gets to play as many characters as he likes in a story about a centuries-old cabal resisting discovery. As narrator Jeremy Irons (yes) tells us in the opening credits, the difference between other secretive...

In Mike Myers’ new six-part Netflix series, “The Pentaverate,” the Canadian comedy legend plays eight new characters. Add them to a repertoire that includes such beloved weirdos as Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dieter, Dr. Evil and Shrek, and the streamer seems eager to tout their partnership with the actor, pairing him with director David O. Russell for an hour-long mutual-appreciation session at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.
Asked by Russell to describe the idea that inspired the new show, Myers — who showed up, despite having lost his voice to seasonal allergies — flashed back to his 1993 feature “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” in which he played both main character Charlie Mackenzie and his dad, a cuckoo conspiracy nut who ranted about a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world who run everything.

As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.
Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.

It’s another week of unstoppable television. As we barrel towards the end of Emmy eligibility, the mixture of highbrow prestige fare (like “The Staircase”) and four-quadrant blockbusters (like the Mike Myers-led “The Pentaverate”) just keep on coming. Plus, we’ve got new documentaries about Sheryl Crow and a social security scam artist that you won’t believe, Guillermo del Toro’s masterful “Nightmare Alley” like you’ve never seen and the Muppets invading “Holey Moley.” Buckle up. It’s a big week.
On with the television!

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew Greg Daniels and Steve Carell’s comedy series Space Force for a third season.
The decision on the series, which starred John Malkovich and Ben Schwartz alongside Carell, comes two and a half months after Season 2 was released February 18. It did not break into the overall Nielsen streaming weekly Top 10 ranking but made a brief appearance on the streaming originals Nielsen charts, debuting at No. 8 and rising to No. 7 the following week. It also had a short presence in Netflix’s Daily Top 10 raking, peaking at around No. 5 after Season 1 had had a lengthy stay at No. 1.
