Olivia says that a preacher's wife killed her husband with a shotgun and got only 67 days. She is referring to Mary Winkler (b.1973) who killed her husband Matthew (1974-2006) on 22 Mar 2006 during an argument. On 19 Apr 2007, the jury found her guilty of voluntary manslaughter, based on testimony about his combination of emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. The murder trial was the subject of the TV film The Pastor's Wife (2011), based on the book of the same title by Diane Fanning.
This episode shares similarities with the movie Saw (2004) in which a serial killer kidnaps and tortures his victims, similar to what is depicted in this episode. The movie also has FBI agents trying to locate the serial killer, some of whom are strongly affected emotionally, like Lauren Cooper, who is an FBI agent.
