A lovely and illuminating portrait
Woodyanders18 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This 63-minute long documentary provides an affecting and informative portrait of actress and director Barbara Loden. Loden speaks with disarming candor about her modest roots growing up in a small town in North Carolina and living with her grandparents after her parents separated. Moreover, Loden talks at length about moving to New York City as a young woman and working as both a model and a showgirl before going on to become an actress in stage productions. Moreover, we also see Loden teaching an acting class, practicing ballet, and reading literature around the table with her family as well as discussing a play that she wanted to produce with acting teacher Paul Mann. In addition, this documentary explores Loden's complicated relationship with her famous director husband Elia Kazan and delves into the making of her sole feature length directorial effort "Wanda." Loden in the doc comes across as a sweet, smart, and appealing person who cared deeply about love, life, and her art. The fact that Loden was suffering from breast cancer at the time this doc was filmed that eventually killed her at age 48 gives the whole thing a certain wrenching poignancy.
