One of the best episodes of the series!
collectorofsorts11 January 2022
No fan can forget the moment when Dexter owned Doakes and initiated the attack that got him suspended and removed from the building. After all these years, I still get the same rush when I get the BluRay's out for a watch and get to that episode. Truly one of the best!

Dexter makes a potentially fatal mistake
chillwill9221 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Dexter sends a manifesto to a newspaper, completely changing the game for Lundy and his Bay Harbor Butcher task force. In addition, he attends a school event for Cody despite his breakup with Rita, and manages to frame Doakes in order to ensure his suspension from Miami Metro. While he appears to make great strides in this episode, the manifesto puts him further at risk, and Doakes' suspension means that he can now pursue Dexter full-time. In addition, Debra decides to forge a relationship with Lundy, being charmed by him despite their age difference. The twist at the end reveals Lila's psychosis, and basically expresses that her relationship with Dexter is living on borrowed time.

Excellent Episode!
g-bodyl18 June 2014
This is the seventh episode of the second season of Dexter and it's an excellent, character-driven, action-packed episode. Many things happen in this episode, so you better not blink. I loved this episode in part because the intensity between Sgt. Doakes and Dexter has gotten even stronger with the happenings in this episode.

In this episode, "That Night, A Forest Grew," Dexter sends a 32-page manifesto in order to confuse the task force. Meanwhile, Dexter realizes he must fight back against Doakes if he is to protect his secrets. While on a romantic dinner with Lila, she gets jealous when she finds out he will be seeing Rita at Cody's school play. Finally, Debra begins a relationship with Secret Agent Lundy.

Overall, this is a fantastic episode and it's even more intense. This show has a knack of wanting you to see more and I do want to see more. I rate this episode 10/10.

Solving a Problem and Divided by Two Women
claudio_carvalho16 August 2010
Dexter sends a messy manifesto to the Miami Herald to mislead the investigations of Lundy's team. With Sergeant Doakes on his tail, Dexter plots a Machiavellian scheme to get rid of the hassle. Gail punishes Cody for calling Dexter and Rita takes an attitude sending her back home. Debra dumps Gabriel and shows affection for Agent Lundy. Meanwhile Dexter sentimental life is divided between Lila that supports him in his addiction and Rita and her kids that give sense of family to him. Out of the blue, Lila decides to call the attention to her.

In this episode, Dexter frames the dangerous Doakes and this attitude will probably bring consequences in the next episodes. However the reckless attitude of Lila seems to indicate that the woman will be trouble for him. My vote is eight.

BuildUps and PayOffs
CinemaFX10 October 2022
First of all, we have gotten to a point where Dexter feels like he has finally gained control.

This episode shows how you can weave intricate webs and storylines to have a great payoffs and moments within the series mid-term. Like :

The scene that started the storyline of Maria starting to believe Doakes being instable lately with the 2 shootings within 6 months... tied with him tailing Dexter for few months.

Another one with Rita and her mother being so controlling to reach the dramatic point this episode which makes Dexter between him viewing what is Contol and be Human and inclusion of Lila which leads to the last moment in the series- - and my favorite one so far which I will talk about at last.

All these storylines with Buildups over a season or almost that gets paidoff when Dexter confronts Doakes and frames him. Also, the moment where Dexter says - "They are still playing my tune. It's like I'm conducting a final symphony - requiem for demonic Dexter." He frames Doakes, makes whole Department dance in his tune. But here comes a moment - "Hey, you got your light fixed" Lila, the one who made Dexter feel in Control can control him without any suspection as she said ... she will always get what she wants.

Very interesting take on a "serial killer"
jp-ryan3 April 2008
This is the type of series that gets its hooks in, to such an extent, that you hang for the next episode. The cast is great in typical HBO style with depth of character developed for many regular cast members. Unlike most American series with the emphasis on zero character developments for all but the "stars".

With Dexter, his voice over of inner most thoughts, lets you share the drivers seat as he corrects flaws in the Florida justice system.

In my view he may have erred in his choice of lady, as "The Bill's" Don Beech's daughter is minor league compared with the former ice skater. However one can forgive him this minor blemish when considering the entertainment value provided by this excellent series.

This series, in the tradition of "Cracker", "Prime Suspect" and the Danish series "Unit One" and "The Eagle", despite being from a different perspective, provides very enjoyable viewing in the "police/crime" genre.

Good episode, but Deb and the weak females on my last nerve
magsandwill16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Loving the series-except for a couple of things. 1. DEB: Her character is annoying as hell. We're to believe Lundy - the dapper, brilliant, disciplined, older, handsome G-Man - would fall for her? She's a mess - and there's nothing compelling or attractive enough about her to make someone like Lundy overlook that. She's not an intellectual, a beauty, a witty conversationalist, sexy - just a foul mouthed, insecure mess!

2. WOMEN: I know this is 15 years old, but every woman so far (up to S2.7) is weak, needy, desperate for a man's attention, or a conniving, manipulative witch. Rita, Rita's Mom, Deb, Lila, both Lieutenants and that whole story line with the fiancé .... Hope that improves in later episodes.

Dexter: I just pulled from various blogs on the internet, mixed and matched. Presto manifesto.
antisocial110 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Dex lies to Doakes, to have him lock up and interrogate an innocent man. He can just spin any story regarding the blood, because only an expert can understand it technically haha. Doakes confronts Dex about it. Dex head-butts him, Doakes retaliates and gets suspended for it.

Rita and her mother feud. Could of done without this...introduce her mother then get rid of her, what's the point of this.

Dex's manifest backfires as Lundy works out it was done to create chaos, and therefore the Butcher is most likely involved with law enforcement. Dex's new ways, which are a result of Lila's influence, are making things a lot worse for Dex, and he wants to go back to Rita and the kids but Lila keeps pulling him back in with deceit.

Good episode but nothing special in it.

S2.E7 Reaction/Review [9/10]
panagiotis199311 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 2 Episode 7 ''That Night, a Forest Grew'' (S2. E7): Episode 6 was awesome and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Doesnt Dex miss Rita and the kids? It seems like he has already forgotten about them. I don't understand really Dex's plan for Doakes. I didn't expect that Dex would send a manifesto to the newspaper, sounds hardcore. Doakes now understands who he is messing with. Doakes attacks Dexter, ive been waiting for this, so cool, now Doakes lost his job, well done Dex. I knew there was something going on between Deb and Lundy. Wow, Lila lied about the fire just to get Dex's attention? She is dangerous. Overall an amazing episode, my rating is 9/10.

Dexter is in trouble
dannylee-7808229 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. Dex sets up Doakes 2. Debra breaks up because of a song and kissed Lundy.

3. Rita's mom gets kicked

Bit of a slower episode. Dexter is confused on how to handle two beautiful women. Doakes get kicked off the force due to Dexter's manipulation. Worried that because Dexter briefly showed his true colors, Doakes may be his biggest enemy now. Huge wtf moment for Lundy and Debra. Lila is a bit psychotic. Dexter may have to get out of this fast. Police force is now aware that someone with law enforcement background is the killer. A bit of a stretched thinking but I could live with it.
