Dull melodrama with mismatched leads
JRB-NorthernSoul7 March 2022
On the plus side the production values were nice and it looked great, though a few more light bulbs would have been good - do all interiors have to be shot in cave like darkness all the time these days?

I like Martin Compson and Tuppence Middleton but they didn't make a convincing couple in or out of love and I felt little connection with either of them. It felt more style than substance, the storyline was quite a stretch and wasn't helped by the frequent time jumps.

It wasn't terrible, but overall I found it dull and far-fetched with unengaging characters, so for me a miss.

Great, then average, then rubbish!
simon196311 March 2022
Really unusual and original start, which made me eagerly watch episode 2/4. Started to go downhill mid-way through this episode, and by the final part, I was close to turning it off before it ended. The ending was complete nonsense and totally farcical. Love Perry-Jones and Compston in other productions, but this....uuugghh!!

House of Mystery
Lejink8 March 2023
This intricately plotted four-part thriller started intriguingly and dramatically with Tuppence Middleton's Fiona character returning to her home after a weekend away just in time to find that another couple is moving into her plush London family town house and that she knows nothing about it.

From this arresting opening, we soon learn that she is in a rocky marriage and indeed is separated from Martin Compston's Bram (Bram?) who despite being a doting dad to their two young boys, can't resist the old forbidden fruit when Fi's best friend knocks on his door in an inebriated state after she's fallen out with her own husband, although oddly we don't get to see her guy's reaction to the fling.

Anyway, it soon becomes obvious that everything leads back to Bram who has conveniently disappeared and can't be reached leaving Fi to turn detective to try to get her £2,000,000 house back. Everything she tries seems to lead to a dead-end but at least there's some respite for her in the form of handsome hunky Rupert Penry-Jones Toby character who seems ever so nice and supportive, or is he what he seems...?

Bram, meanwhile, on this enforced break has been enticed into bed by a confident young woman who afterwards seems to know a lot about him and just won't go away...

Cue multiple flashbacks and criss-crossing story-lines as we crucially learn that Bram has previously been lured into a dead-of-night road-rage encounter with fateful consequences not only for him, but even more so for the young passenger of another car innocently caught up in the incident.

It's strange at first to credit that it's all about the house but when you realise the price of property in London these days, perhaps it's not that much of a stretch. Anyway, over four taut, if improbably plotted and characterised episodes, each ending on a good-old fashioned cliffhanger, this show certainly kept the viewer guessing right up to the end. Well acted by the principals, once you swallowed all the improbable coincidences and plot-holes in the narrative, this was exciting and satisfying prime-time entertainment.

Not so bad, really

Warning: Spoilers
Love Tuppence Middleton but not a fan of one trick pony Martin Compston so I was a bit trepidacious about embarking on this, especially as I rarely watch any ITV programmes.

Dark rooms, poor lighting, lots of wine drinking. An infeasibly expensive house. A turgid plot. Far too many close-ups. And the titular Madness song was going through my head all the time.

However, it kept me gripped to the end so I have to give it 7. I think his suicide was a bit unlikely and I'd like to know if she got off the murder charge with a self defence plea. But essentially I enjoyed it. So there!

Am I the only one who liked this?
drobbo-7559910 March 2022
Ok, I binge watched it, which I think is the best way. It was a tad predictable, although with a twist at the end I didn't expect. I rate both Tuppence Middleton and Martin Compston and they made a good fist of their roles.

It's ITV drama which usually has a great start and a shockingly bad ending, but this kept up a good story throughout.

Warning: Spoilers
Started off like it was going to be another great British thriller but ended very dissapointing. A pair of adulterers being deceived by their new lovers. Why on earth did I watch this? No "good guys" in my opinion. No one wins. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Skip it for sure. There are better thrillers out there.

What 'Line of Duty' star does on his day off
scrubber11 March 2022
Preposterous story, but no more than Line of Duty, which also stars Martin Compson. In fact he appears to be playing the same character, but he's off duty in this. Loads of plot holes and strange decisions by the characters but it's fiction not real life. The constant use of flashbacks can be a bit confusing at times, but overall I found it quite entertaining and the final episode contained a few surprises and came to a reasonable conclusion.

So much more potential.
SansSeraphAsh24 September 2022
After watching this series all the way through, we decided that the story and twists were great, the cast good, but that the script was borderline terrible. Hard to believe that Middleton, Compston and Penry-Jones were willing to speak some of it.

So many lines of the script were awkward and not required. People just don't talk to each other like that, or the characters were stating the obvious as if the audience lack commonsense or the ability to understand. Maybe it was important that they filled minutes, but it just became distracting from the storyline.

That said, don't not watch this because of my review as it was actually enjoyable and thought provoking.

An intriguing series.
Sleepin_Dragon21 April 2022
A woman returns home, to find her husband has sold their house, and vanished.

I thoroughly enjoyed this four part series, I have read some of the reviews, I'm not sure what the naysayers were watching, this was a tense, dramatic, well acted series, which is loaded with surprises, twists and turns galore.

There's a degree of originality to it, it's unlike anything I've watched for some time, at the end of part one I was perplexed at how the story could be stretched out, at the end of part two I was left in no doubt, it went in a very different direction.

It's slick, it's well produced, it's certainly well acted, Tuppence Middleton, Martin Compston and Rupert Penry Jones are all great, as are the supporting cast.

You'll be left baffled and intrigued, you won't be able to predict events.

8/10.

Don't Listen To The Comments!

If viewers could control endings all movies would be Trash! Enjoyable thriller that doesn't end well, but a great cast of actors. Hope the writers alter their plans for a second season.

It started out really great and was really intriguing. I was so looking forward to the last episode to see what happens but what a let down . The ending was RUBBISH . Really felt let down by the ending. It was great until then.

Our House Is A Very Fine House
sarah-508-64942113 March 2022
This mini series is somewhere between a 6/10 and a 7. So I gave it a 7. Some of it really seemed to lack depth in places and lag. The two leads had no chemistry at all together but separate played their parts well. Predictable in places too. But over all a good watch even if at times it was rushed. The criminal couple were great.

Interesting start, strange middle and disappointing end
rupturedspleen11 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was an unusual if unlikely story idea, but has been executed poorly.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Started off OK, but quickly became one of those dramas where the characters continually make poor and increasingly bizarre decisions.

Had the usual undercurrent of 'all men are b*stards' running through it, which is fairly standard on TV programmes over the last few years, but despite that Our House stumbled into the concluding episode with the opportunity to serve up a satisfying ending where justice could have been served and some form of redemption could have been had by the main characters. Instead the writers went into overdrive with all of the main characters (and supporting cast) making one terrible decision after another.

***SPOILER ALERT***

For the series to end with the tragic death of the 8 year old in the hit and run, the suicide and murder leaving the innocent boys parent less was beyond belief. A real wasted opportunity.

Madness
xmasdaybaby19662 April 2022
I am writing this after series 1 (in the unlikely event of a series 2).

It's nice to see ITV do a show without too fancy a house (or flat!) and without the cooperation of foreign film tax shelters as has become the norm these days.

There is a good cast here but poorly used.

The script just never really gets going and part 4 could have finished in half the time.

I should have taken heed of other reviewers and not waste 3 hours if my life watching it There is nothing new here.

Good but book is better!
jadecatherine-3863717 April 2022
Like a lot of things turned into a TV show, I preferred the book! The book allowed for a lot more suspense! However, a good program to watch and I would recommend for a short half decent thriller!

A quick watch that will leave you disappointed with questions!
ashobe-5356520 November 2023
The first few episodes were great, yes there were plot holes but there was enough to keep you wanting to finish. The development of the characters was lacking, there was very little that made sense and as the viewer you just had to accept it. Also why do the characters always think that they can figure this out and protect themselves better than the police officers? It's frustrating but without Fi calling the police, you would have had no cliffhanger ending.

Not the worst I've watched but not the best, this is a quick binge when nothing else is on or peaking your interest! Go into watching this knowing that!

Great story...RUINED!
harmonicalproductions12 March 2022
"Our House" has a really great story, full of cleverly devised twists and turns. So full marks to Louise Candlish.

Indeed, I would have given it 10 stars, but for the appalling "trendy" production which is so often evident in modern drama. This is the infuriating and confusing editing technique of jumping back and forth in time. It starts in the present, then it goes back 10 years or so, then it comes forward a bit, back a bit, then you are in the present, then you're back 7 years or something.

The producers of so many dramas these days feel compelled to do this jumping about in time, a bit like those infuriating "previously..." and "coming up..." inserts into reality shows.

The thing is that with all of the arts, it's never about originality as most people fondly believe, it's about "follow my leader", keeping in with the latest trend.

What a total waste of a brilliant story and great actors too!

Excellent thriller
markstefano-8810110 March 2022
Well acted and staged thriller based around a family man who's actions effect his wife when he is found cheating and then he becomes involved in a blackmail plot( that again effects his wife) Both leads are excellent. The acting was great all round i thought. Your never sure who Tuppence Middleton ( who plays Fi the wife) should trust,if anybody.

You feel their seemingly perfect life slowly unravel and you feel their life will not be the same again, but will it?

Nice turn from the actress who plays the menacing minx Wendy also.

Way too dark
lizfox-6819811 May 2022
This could have been worth watching but it was all so dark. Do you not have lights in british houses? How can anyone see what's going on in suck darkness. I had to listen to this like a radio serial. It would have been much better if we could see the picture!

Could Have Been Better
paulowen-6559910 March 2022
I was prepared to accept shortcomings until wife got out of the car in the last episode and didn't phone police straight away.

Why do these writers think that a woman is any match for a 6ft male.

Just... pointless.
silentbod12 March 2022
As others have said, episode 1 was very good and left me intrigued as to where the story would go next. But it didn't go anywhere. All the drama and tension fizzled out over the next 2 episodes. By the time ep4 came on I was already done. Just as well as the ending was terrible too.

All in all, it felt like someone had a really good idea for the start of a story, and then was given the green light to make it before they'd actually figured out the rest of the plot.

Brilliant Cast and Great Acting!
sarahmurray-422284 May 2022
Really enjoyed this series. Implausible story may be, but so is GOT, Batman, Dexter etc. Really great twists and turns throughout, not quite edge of the seat stuff, but lots of surprises and a good ending, maybe, hopefully leading to a second series.

Binge watched on Britbox last night. Feeling a bit tired today, worth it though.

My first review, I felt I had to join so as people are not put off by the unfair negative reviews on here. Many will like this.

Well worth watching. 10/10. Well done ITV yet again.

Better than average thriller
stevev-3409510 March 2022
The conveyer belt of thrillers is never ending, as one ends another one begins.

This one is better than average but that's not saying much, todays average thriller wouldn't have made it to the screen 20 years ago. As usual it's best not to think too much about the plot.

Our house well and truly written by the madness!
jp-cadden9210 March 2022
Plot holes , terrible clarity within the time lines , pathetic story all in all .

Honestly probably one of the worst mini series I've seen.

Eastenders has more depth !
