Sequel That Doesn't Really Accomplish What It Aims To
gavin694220 September 2008
One year after the disappearance of Jesse and Nicole, Jesse's brother Tom (a corporal in the Army, fresh on leave from Iraq) and two friends are on the trail. Although the police were unable to do anything, these three quickly stumble on the same path from a year before... encountering the religious family, the driver... and more. Will they meet the same fate? I really enjoyed "Rest Stop" and seeing that the same people -- most of the original cast (Jaime Alexander is noticeably absent), plus John Shiban and Shawn Papazian -- had returned, I figured this one couldn't be too bad. But my feelings are mixed. While some of it was pretty good, other aspects came across as lacking. I'll start with the defects and then go back to the merits.

The casting confused me. Both Tom Hilts (Richard Tillman) and his friend Jared (Graham Norris) weren't overly likable, and they came across as awkward. I had no interest in caring about them. The girlfriend (Jessie Ward) was good as far as being the "sexy chick", but beyond that had little to offer. Was I supposed to care about her? The other big concern was that while the creators had said they wanted to expand the mythology of the first film, almost every scene was covering the same territory all over again. It's true that new details about the driver emerged, and there was some added mythology, but not really enough to make this film seem progressive.

My final concern was the use of torture. I understand torture was used in the first film on the bus, but it seems like it was increased for this flick. For no particular reason. Having one character be turned on another? Excruciatingly painful incidents that do little or nothing in punishing sin, as near as I can tell. If you're going to use torture, use it sparingly. The torture meme has taken over horror and I have been sick of it for some time now... it's not scary, it's just getting played out and boring.

But the film is not without its merits. There's a great bathroom scene... an intense sex scene which could have gone further but goes pretty far as it is... and more of those creepy twins. The use of gritty filming (like in "Devil's Rejects") returns, which I think adds a lot of character (and should be used more, not less). And for those who liked the first film, this fills in some blanks that may have been lingering in the minds of viewers.

Overall, "Rest Stop: Don't Look Back" was not a necessary part of the series and could have gone without being made. I feel that for what was added, it wasn't nearly enough. At the same time, the film sets the stage for a "Rest Stop 3", since now there's bound to be questions needing answers for some people. I'm curious. I don't know if they can adequately answer my concerns about the plot, but they have my endorsement if they are willing to try. Just please... more plot, less torture.

Now what kinda ghost tortures people n communicates with a gas station attendant, asks one person to torture another.
Fella_shibby3 June 2019
First saw this on a dvd which i own in 2008. Revisited it today. This film managed to explain about the happenings from the first part but ruined itself. Both the parts had unnecessary torture scenes. Now what kinda ghost tortures people n communicates with a gas station attendant n asks one person to torture another. The story takes place one year after Jesse and Nicole disappeared in the first part. Jesse's brother returns from Iraq n decides to go looking for his brother with his girlfriend and one of his friend.

Once they get to California, the trio asks direction from a gas station attendant who was never there in the first part. I don't kno how the attendant gets the horseriding badge that belonged to Nicole from the first part. Generous with 5 cos of the desert settings n the initial ten mins explanation.

Not as good as the first, not bad though
Sabalon5 October 2008
I realize I may be in the minority liking the first, then again the IMDb boards seem to be there only to complain.

Rest Stop was a bit of slasher with a ghost story thrown in. There were several places where you just kinda went "oh...didn't see that coming". In part 2, it seems like they tried to duplicate those, but after seeing the first one, they didn't have the oh-wow value.

The ghost sequences were all pretty obvious (sans one) and the whole Family is a known from the first one so that wasn't a surprise.

As for the background they tried to give the people from the first one, while somewhat interesting, it just didn't seem to fit or feel quite right. One can only hope that if they make a third one it will all payoff. However, they need to finish the story instead of trying to keep stretching it out as it's getting a bit thin and there will not be much more you can do with the story.

If you liked the bit of gore from the first one, this one has taken it up a few steps. If you like the spooky atmosphere, that is there, but not as present as the first one. If you like old Ford trucks, you're in luck!

Rest Stop: Don't Bother to Look
kaaria1-122 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I would call this Rest Stop 2: Don't Bother to Look. This movie by far was not the worst I have seen. But with that being said it is far from the best. We have the brother and his ridiculous girlfriend (don't care about her at all) searching for the two from the original. Then we have random guy that has sex with a ghost while wearing poop stained underwear. I digress. The couple ends up at the infamous rest stop, where they battle the restroom ghost and the creepy family of nuts and the school bus. I did like that they gave the killer some background but they didn't know what to do with it, once they gave it to us. I was left wondering, what the hell just happened. I was confused and frankly don't need to see a part 3. Just let this series of movies die. They suck! It is unfortunate that they couldn't have made a better movie. I really wanted this to be good and to tie up all the questions I had from the 1st.

Disappointing Mess
claudio_carvalho12 October 2008
The corporal Tom Hilts (Richard Tillman) returns from overseas to his hometown Argyle, Texas, for a ten days leave with the intention to seek our his brother Jess (Joey Mendicino), who disappeared one year ago while heading to California with his girl-friend Nicole (Julie Mond). He drives his truck with his girlfriend Marilyn (Jessie Ward) and followed by his friend Jared (Graham Norris) in his old car to California trying to track his brother. While in the old highway California, Jared needs to stop his car in an old rest stop to go to the toilet and is attacked by the driver of a yellow truck. Meanwhile Tom and Marilyn wait for him in the next rest stop where Tom is also attacked and kidnapped by the driver of the yellow truck. Marilyn sees the ghost of Nicole in the restroom and realizes that they are facing supernatural evil forces.

"Rest Room" had a good premise but the writer did not know how to end the story. However "Rest Stop: Don't Look Back" is a disappointing mess, with a non-likable lead characters – Tom, Jared and Marilyn – and an invincible sadistic ghost. The greatest "attraction" of this flick is the sick tortures inflicted by the driver to his victims, removing eyes and drilling knees and legs, with lots of gore and pain. But the plot itself is very weak and worse than in the original movie. My vote is two.

Title (Brazil): "Rota Mortal: Não Olhe Para Trás" ("Mortal Route: Don't Look Back")

Load Of Rubbish
billbeast6 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Load of rubbish. The film starts off good, and is enjoyable, right until about mid-way through, when things become laughable. One of the characters even has sex with a ghost. The movie was just plain stupid and had PLOT HOLES written all over it. It was predictable and one thing died throughout the whole movie.

The plot started off good and then turned to rubbish. The amount of plot-holes and unrelated dialog was so stupid and it just made the filming pointless.

The acting was surprisingly good, with a believable cast, take 1. One of the key elements to the film is the acting.

Overall this sequel, is only to be viewed if you've seen the first, and even if you have seen the first, i wouldn't bother buying it, or renting it. My rating is 1.5/5

Confused
Inky2119 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
OK this is the confusing part how did the bathroom ghost in the first rest stop go missing and got killed in 1971 if the serial killer was killed in 1972?...doesn't even make sense and the dates doesn't match up just confusing. And what was the point of the ghost sex???...and how did eyeballs come into plan like it was a clue in the first movie it really wasn't so what was the point of speaking about eyeballs they never said anything in the first movie about him taking out his victims eyeballs and never seen taking out eyeballs being his mark on victims, so why is it relevant?...this plot is just twisted and changing into something it wasn't in the beginning. All of the things happening has nothing to do with what happened in the first movie and did he forget about his girlfriend and his friend *funny*..but I guess some of the movie was OK.

I was surprised..
The-Man-In-The-Mask1 October 2008
I'm in a minority here, but I really enjoyed the movie.

The gore scenes were pretty good, a few good jump-scares, and just creepy and fun scenes make it a fun movie to watch. Very weird, hard to understand and a lot of problems with it, but it's better than the first, and at least worth a rent.

One of my main problems is the characters were annoying, and I often kept wanting to smack Marilyn across the face.

But, considering a lot of the straight-to-DVD crap that gets put out, this was an okay film that I actually enjoyed, maybe a little more than I should have...

I did not care too much for the ending despite an interesting premise
jordondave-280854 April 2023
(2008) Rest Stop: Don't Look Back HORROR

Somewhat a continuation of what happened on the first movie, this time has young war veteran, Tom Hilts (Richard Tillman) along with 2 of his other friends- his girlfriend Marilyn (Jessie Ward) and Jared (Graham Norris) going on a search rant to find his brother, labelled who was missing from the first movie. They do this by retracing back to a lonely deserted highway called "Rest Stop", unbeknownst that it's entirely new dimension. Crossing their paths is a psychotic christian family in an RV and a deranged pick up driver. The movie has an interesting premise, except that I did not care too much for the ending.

Fun little gem
boy_in_red10 October 2008
I enjoyed the first Rest Stop movie- considering it was a straight to video, low budget horror, I felt it was a tense off-the-beaten track film, with some nice, and unexpected, supernatural elements. Though I'm not claiming it's a horror classic, it was a fun film, and certainly felt like one of the fresher films in this sub-genre of horror, especially when compared to the tired Texas Chainsaw prequel and Hills Have Eyes sequel- both of which were out around the same time.

I think the sequel is equally fun- if not more so. Anyone witnessing the porta-potty scene will know there's a real streak of humour in this film. The supernatural aspects are also capitalised upon- allowing for a good twist or two. The sequel fleshes out some of the history of the freakish family, we find out what happened to the characters from the last film- all in all, it does what a good sequel is supposed to! So if you want a fun hour and a half, you could do far worse than watching this. It's silly fun, with some laughs, some gory parts and some tense moments, but then that's the point, I expect. It's a nice feeling when a straight-to-DVD film demonstrates a lot of what is missing in big budget cinematic horror films today- bring on Rest Stop 3!!!

Oh come on it's not that bad... But "ends here".
insomniac_rod27 September 2009
This follow up for the original "Rest Stop" is fast paced, entertaining, humorous (Jared taking a crap and being ambushed by a truck by later getting a crap shower! in the likes of "Slumdog Millonaire" or the having sex with a ghost scene), and gory at some points.

The plot twist that worked in the original tries to repeat the success in this sequel but it didn't make an impact at all.

The whole explanation towards the legend of death is pretty interesting and gruesome if you take in account the opening murder. The creepy twins, the midget, the sexual sadistic mother, and the preacher; now that's material for a b-direct to video sequel. The gore is just good and it's all about eye gouging and stabbings. The acting is just regular by the standards of these kind of movies.

The lead actress is pure hotness! Most of the characters are likable, heck even Jared. I liked how it kept connected with the events of the original. The "ends here" line was pure gold and gave a darker tone to the movie.

Watch it if you're fan of direct to video horror. It has the "b" feeling all over it.

The ending left me wondering "what the hell?!". And I'm sure a sequel is on it's way. But for the better it should "ends here".

Bad
cuzndwyne-117 October 2008
To say that this movie was not as good as the first and then say not bad, indicates that the first had some redeeming value to it all. Let me assure you. This one is better then the first, but thats like saying poo w/ peanuts is better then plain poo.

It is completely predictable and the characters are about as likable as a string of small pox. Making the same stoopid mistakes that horror characters have done for the past 50 years. You would think that given the fact that this movie happens in present day the characters would at least acknowledge.."Hey we are dealing with spooky bad people. What happens to people who take they're eyes off the ghost or when we send someone to get something, by themselves? oh right....we get effed real good." Its bad enough that these characters are complete underdogs in this flick. At least try and make it interesting by having them make educated choices. At least make the lopsided fight somewhat interesting. Nope not this poop with peanuts of a movie. There is so much more to get into with this 88 minute waste of time. I just feel as though if I spend any more time on it then the "Driver" has claimed too much of my life as well.

My rating for this flick....I give it an "A-holes" Means avoid this movie. If you have to choose between this and Wrong Turn 2...go with Wrong Turn 2. At least then you get Corn and Peanuts.

My Review
joemamaohio25 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
One year after his brother and girlfriend disappeared, Tom (Richard Tillman) and his girlfriend Marilyn (Jessie Ward) decide to go to California to find them. Tom's geeky friend Jared (Graham Norris) travels with them.

The same guy who killed his brother is still haunting the highway, and finds and tortures the new breed of travelers, and also returning is the RV filled with the walking corpses.

This movie reminds me of "Joy Ride 2"...another needless sequel with subpar acting, story, and effects. Nothing that distinguishes itself from being memorable, and something that will easily be forgotten.

Better Then The Original, But That's Not Really Saying Much
IcyRoses26 July 2010
The first Rest Stop is cinema at it's worst, so when the sequel came along, I expected the same thing, horror trying to be art. Well, to say least, I was a little surprised.

The story follows the brother of the man killed in the first part, he decides to go to California to look for his brother and his girlfriend. He brings his girlfriend and geeky friend. Soon, the come upon the rest stop where the two people perished, and soon the same supernatural crap that happened in the first one starts happening to them.

First of all, this film actually wallows in the supernatural crap, so it's not annoying or confusing like in the first. The acting is nothing to scream about, it's not horrible. And while the story is still stupid and confusing (not to mention full of plot holes) it's still entertaining to a certain degree.

In the end, you can skip it, unless you REALLY loved the first.

Direct-to-video torture porn for people who just can't get enough of Rest Stop's killer ghost.
krachtm17 February 2013
The plot: Searching for his missing brother, a soldier runs into the killer ghost from Rest Stop, with predictable results for him and his friends.

Rest Stop 2 follows many of the conventions of the first movie, but manages to excise some of the pointless filler, replacing it with extended scenes of gory torture. Also, the origin of the ghostly killer is revealed, along with his connection to the creepy religious family. If you were dying to know these things, then I can understand why you'd want to see Rest Stop 2, but there really isn't much reason to subject yourself to this movie, when you can just read the synopsis on Wikipedia or the IMDb.

One of the saving graces of the original Rest Stop was its atmosphere and judicial use of gore. Unfortunately, the parts without gore tended to be a bit boring. In Rest Stop 2, the gore is pretty much its sole reason for being. As a result, I would recommend this movie only to fans of Rest Stop, gorehounds, and torture porn enthusiasts. Most other people will probably be either bored stupid or too grossed out. It's no masterpiece, but the gore effects are pretty good, for a low budget, direct-to-video sequel. Honestly, I'm a bit tired of horror movies that are nothing but young adults being tortured to death slowly, but I've seen worse ones than this. Some of the scenes were twisted enough to be memorable, but the movie itself really isn't.

Some chuckles and a load of gore in this adequate sequel.
Hey_Sweden6 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The story established in "Rest Stop" continues with this movie, in which Richard Tillman plays Tom Hilts, a Corporal returned from Iraq who learns that his younger brother Jesse (Joseph George Mendicino), the protagonist of the first film, has gone missing. He embarks on a road trip from Texas to rural California, with his girl Marilyn (Jessie Ward) and a nerdy friend, Jared (Graham Norris), in tow. The three of them don't have to wait for long before the villainous trucker (Brionne Davis), who is intent on torturing sinners, is terrorizing them.

While "Don't Look Back" doesn't stand out from the very large pack of direct to home video horror out there, it has its moments. It includes a touch of the supernatural, and does have a lowbrow sense of humour at times. Writer / producer John Shiban and director Shawn Papazian do seem to delight in being as gross as possible, especially in the sequence where Norris is attacked while utilizing a Port-a-Potty. The scenery & widescreen photography are superb, the soundtrack just fine, and the makeup effects are suitably disgusting. The characters do take a while to grow on you; at first, Marilyn and Jared come off as caricatures. But when they start taking the fight to the trucker, they have enough rooting interest.

Studly Tillman (younger brother of the late, great Pat Tillman) is well cast as the hero, although the script takes a turn for a while that makes you think that he will be expendable. The cast is decent enough right down the line; buffs will note the presence of Diane Louise Salinger (Simone in "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure") as the Reverends' trampy wife, and Steve Railsback ("The Stunt Man", 'Helter Skelter') is nicely cast in an admittedly cliched type of role as a slovenly gas station proprietor.

Okay for at least a one time watch, "Don't Look Back" is disposable horror fare. No more and no less.

Five out of 10.

I guess if you liked the first one
TdSmth54 November 2012
I didn't like the first Rest Stop. This one is somewhat of an improvement, at least during the first half. That's when we learn about the origins of the driver, so to speak. Then we are introduced to the main characters, an army guy brother of the guy in part I; his girlfriend and a geek who's had a crush on the girl from part I. They all go searching for the kids from part I. They run into the typical creepy gas station guy, they find the rest stop, not before the driver finds them and gives them a hard time. Eventually he grabs army guy and tortures him. He in turn finds his brother, or so it seems. The girlfriend and the geek start having visions of the girl from part I and the geek will be delivered to the weirdo family which also makes a comeback in this movie.

The girlfriend will confront the driver and she will get tortured and later, army guy fights the driver. Several times we see the weirdo family driving around bothering people with their religious talk.

The second half of Rest Stop II is just as dismal as all of the first movie. That's when we get supernatural events that make no sense and in the end make this movie senseless and pointless. At least this one seems to have a bigger budgets. So instead of a few people running endlessly around a rest stop, here we get some more locations. The gore and violence are good but rare. The weirdo family isn't scary, interesting or creepy, just annoying. This time around we see plenty of the driver and his face, but still learn little about him that would be consistent. We learn of an Indian myth about lost souls looking for their eyes and yet rarely do we see the driver without eyes. But trying to make sense of this movie is fruitless. And this movie doesn't give us enough to forgive the fact that it makes no sense whatsoever.

Rather uninspired and lesser sequel
kannibalcorpsegrinder30 January 2014
After hearing of the disappearance of the victims at the rest stop, his brother and friends journey out to find him only to come across the same supernaturally-powered killer and must try to put an end to his reign of terror at before others fall victim to his wrath.

This here turned out to be a thoroughly uninviting mess, literally filled with lots of different issues that are nowhere near interesting enough to really carry itself out of the mire it utilized previously in the original. One of the biggest issues here is the fact that it gives the killer a decided supernatural presence, complete with loony back-story and motivation, which isn't a threatening motivation for a killer and makes no sense as, in part 1, it was merely hinted at and clashes now with the realism depicted there. As well, this one tends to trade in confrontations with the killer for having the group wander around trying to investigate what's going on and leading to large sections of time without anything going on, leading to even more problems with the boredom setting in at the worst times. While the gore and violence present do make for some good times and it's got a tense scene or two, it's not enough to mask the overwhelming flaws present.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and Brief Nudity.

Improves slightly on the original, but still remains as a useless sequel
Shattered_Wake6 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
One year after couple Jesse (Joey Mendicino) and Nicole (Julie Mond) disappeared, Jesse's brother, Tom (Richard Tillman), asks his friends (Jessie Ward, Graham Norris) to join him on a search for his brother. On the way, they stumble upon the same isolated Rest Stop that Jesse and Nicole were brutalized. Unfortunately for Tom and his friends, the yellow-truck-driving madman still haunts the roadside looking for victims. . . and they're next on his route.

While not a fan of the below-average first (simply Rest Stop), I decided to give Rest Stop: Don't Look Back a fair chance. In the first film, an average idea (a couple gets stranded at an isolated rest stop and a crazed killer stalks them down) is ruined by an impossible twist (and you thought Haute Tension's was unbelievable), subpar performances by actors we've seen do better, and a script so contrived my head was pounding in annoyance. So, the sequel came out with a LOT of ground to make up if it wanted to be even worth a passing glance. One major thing holds back the sequel before even it even begins: there's not a lot you can do at a rest stop. The first didn't do too much, but I think it took advantage of the few things possible at a bathroom. Therefore, as Rest Stop: Don't Look Back progressed, it felt kind of like Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in comparison to the remake. . . the same subject matter with just a couple twists in the plot and different characters. That's not a very good thing. A subpar first doesn't warrant a sequel to begin with, but if a sequel MUST be made, do something special with it! Surprise your audience, give us something new, give us a reason to say, "I'm glad I picked that up." Do NOT, under any circumstance, feed us the same trite garbage you gave us in the first. This is all where this sequel failed. Well, there. . . and with the horrendous script, the stiff and unrealistic acting, horrible story progression and pacing, and dizzying camera-work. I won't completely put it off as terrible, however, as there was some good gore and violence, much more than what I remember from the first. Unfortunately, we missed some of the best violence (eye gouging and the like) due to scene cutaways, but I attribute that to a low budget. The gore wasn't enough to save the film, however, and it ends up being just as lame, predictable (and somehow ridiculous), and forgettable as the original.

Final verdict: 3.75/10.

Worse than first...
Thanos_Alfie19 January 2014
"Rest Stop: Don't Look Back" is a horror movie and is the sequel of the "Rest Stop" movie of 2006 and I think that it was a really worse movie than the first.

In this movie we have the brother of Jesse who is looking for him and in his quest he captured from the same maniac serial killer who we have in the first movie.

I believe that this sequel it was a disaster and it demolished everything that the first movie built even though there was few. Finally I believe that one movie it was nice why they have to repeat it and make it worse...

Doomed to repeat. We need a rest.
michaelRokeefe10 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It has been a year since Jess and Nicole went missing at a rundown rest stop on California's Old Highway. Jess' brother Tom(Richard Tillman), a soldier back from Iraq and his girlfriend Marilyn(Jessie Ward)and an idiot pal Jared(Graham Norris)go searching for the missing lovers. They just so happen find the same rest stop. Same mysterious pickup driver and Winnebago carrying a family of living corpses.

I can't say this doesn't meet expectations. We get some answers from the first trip and it looks like there is a strange reason to make a third road trip. Violence is gruesome, maybe even more than the first horrific events. Its hard to really care for the characters in peril. The cast includes: Brionne Davis, Julie Mond, Joey Mendicino and Diane Louise Salinger.

Look back and don't rest
TheLittleSongbird9 June 2018
Saw 'Rest Stop: Don't Look Back', being fond of horror regardless of budget (even if not my favourite genre) and being intrigued somewhat by the idea. Being behind on my film watching and reviewing, with a long to watch and review list that keeps getting longer, it took me a while to get round to watching and reviewing it. Despite not caring for the first 'Rest Stop', saw the sequel anyway with curiosity.

Giving 'Rest Stop: Don't Look Back' a fair chance with being interest and apprehension, it turned out to be a little better than expected with having the same strengths and flaws of the first 'Rest Stop' and being about the same in quality (basically not caring for either). Won't say that 'Rest Stop: Don't Look Back' is a great film (mediocre actually) because it isn't and the potential, while not wasted, is not fully lived up to. Considering the large number of films seen recently being mediocre and less and wasting potential, was expecting worse and was relieved that while wanting in a fair few areas it was actually one of my better recent low-budget viewings if not by much.

'Rest Stop: Don't Look Back' started off quite well, the first twenty minutes or so starting the film off on a promising, unsettling and atmospheric note that really does intrigue.

Production values did have some eeriness and nowhere near as cheap as expected.

The setting is effectively spooky. Initially, there are spooky and suspenseful moments, it isn't dull, and the storytelling initially does intrigue. Admired that it tried to be more than a standard slasher film, the supernatural element does intrigue but that it's open to interpretation so divisively says a lot for things feeling confused and muddled too often.

However, the story was severely wanting in the second half after starting off promisingly. It is very disjointed and after the promising start the final third especially loses atmosphere, one loses interest and things start to not make sense. Too much of the film is vague and doesn't explore some elements and story strands enough, some dropped soon after being introduced, go nowhere or serve much point. Instead of doing something different from the first 'Rest Stop', meaning giving some freshness while maintaining the spirit and with chance of improvement, it is too more of the same-like and with even less imagination.

Ending is unsatisfying, on top of feeling hasty there are too many loose ends hanging in the air and it all felt abrupt. Got the sense that the writers didn't know how to end the film. Would have liked much more tension and suspense (where there is barely any of either), scares could have been more consistent (again nowhere near enough) and some weren't surprising enough and had no atmosphere, the over-obvious sound not helping. Coherence wasn't a strong suit either.

Found too the script to lack natural flow and with a fair bit of cheese and blandness going on, and the characters bland with some adopting some annoying and not always logical decision making, Marilyn is one of those wanting-to-slap characters. There is very little menace to the conflict, uncreative and unscary kills, the direction is phoned in and generally the acting is subpar. Elements intended to "spice things up" (gore and profanity) were overused and gratuitous.

Overall, mediocre. 4/10 Bethany Cox
