Moving away from regular horror, Bollywood is lately warming up to the idea of serving scares with a spot of humour. The horror comedy as a genre is suddenly in vogue among mainstream Hindi filmmakers.
The genre existed in the Hindi film industry for ages -- the old classic "Bhoot Bangla" and recent releases such as "Bhul Bhulaiyaa", "Bhootnath", "Go Goa Gone" and "Stree" come to mind. These films, however, were one-off cases. What is happening now is that Bollywood filmmakers have suddenly taken interest in the genre of horror comedy in a way that it seems like the genre is here to stay. Importantly, the new crop of films serve the funny scares with a new-age spin and a message.
We look at a few horror comedy films that are all set to hit the screens.
Bhoot Police
The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam and Arjun Kapoor.

Saturday’s show opened with much excitement as superstar Salman Khan would be gracing the stage of Jhalak once again. Before Salman’s entry, host Manish lost his watch, and host Ranvir lost his glasses! Then Salman entered the show and performed on the super hit Kick song (which has music by Himesh Reshammiya), ‘Jumme Ki Raat’. Salman was warmly welcomed by the hosts, contestants and judges. Salman also returned host Manish’s watch.
Next, it was time to get back to business, and find out the two contestants that would be in this week’s face-off. As always, all the contestants were called on stage but this time, judge Madhuri, announced that all the contestants are safe this week and that there would be no eliminations! This week’s Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, started on a “short”, sad note as host Ranvir Shorey read out a humorous letter from host Drashti Dhami explaining why she has left the show. Ranvir even joked that he wished she hadn’t left him as he now has to do all the work himself! Of course, thankfully, Drashti has been replaced and it is by none other than Manish Paul who was one of the original hosts during the earlier seasons of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. All the judges and contestants welcomed him warmly, and the show was filled with his usual hilarious antics and natural flirty behaviour with the ladies!
This week’s theme of Jhalak was ‘Judges Demand’ and this meant that the judges had chosen the specific dance style and that each contestant was to perform. Only how they did it, would remain entirely their choice.
