X-Men: First Class (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Bryne, Oliver Platt, Nicholas Hoult, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi, Jason Flemyng, Morgan Lily, Zoe Kravitz, and Bill Bilner.
The first act of X-Men: First Class is an excellent single-note, centralized drama while the remaining two acts of the film are a hodgepodge of answered-before-asked questions in addition to X-Men movie continuity errors, starting with the Jean Grey/Professor X/Magneto segment at the beginning of Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand (written about here: Film Review: X-Men: The Last Stand).
Keeping the above in mind, X-Men: First Class can be broken down into three parts, not to be confused with its three acts: Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender)’s back story and revenge, Professor X (James McAvoy)’s evolution, and The Hellfire Club’s mutant utopia plan.

Damsels in Distress
Opens: 2011
Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf
Director: Whit Stillman
Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.
Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Stillman says this film varies somewhat from his previous trilogy of sorts, telling First Things that "This film is different, Completely different. Okay, not completely different, but it’s different".

Photo: Miramax Films The Debt traces fictional events taking place in 1965 as three young Mossad agents are charged with the duty of bringing Vogel (Jesper Christensen), a Nazi war criminal referred to as the "Surgeon of Birkenau", to justice. A remake of Assaf Bernstein's 2007 film of the same name, director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) tells the story of Rachel (Jessica Chastain/Helen Mirren), David (Sam Worthington/Ciaran Hinds) and Josef (Marton Csokas/Tom Wilkinson), covering the details of their mission 30 years ago and how it has changed their lives ever since.
Bouncing back and forth in time, The Debt is a satisfying thriller that is almost so subtle it feels like it's based on a true story. The balance between story and attempts to thrill is this film's strongest asset. Situations aren't exaggerated in order to make for increased tension,...

The official trailer for The Debt has debuted. Check it out after the jump:
The Debt tells the story of three Mossad spies (Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Marton Csokas) who attempt to capture and bring to trial the Surgeon of Birkenau, a Nazi war criminal, but something goes wrong. 30 years later, the doctor resurfaces, and the they (Hellen Mirren, Ciaran Hinds, Tom Wilkinson) must relive the trauma from so long ago. John Madden directs a Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan script, which is a remake of the film Ha-Hov by Assaf Bernstein and Ido Rosenblum.
This is the first I’ve seen of this film, and it has me really looking forward to it. When I first read about the movie, it sounded like another Sam Worthington-lead action flick, which was not appealing. This is definitely not another Clash of the Titans. I love the split narrative,...

Hey, what's Sam Worthington doing starring in something that isn't a major blockbuster? This just doesn't seem right. In John Madden's The Debt, he plays a Mossad agent in the '60s on the trail of a Nazi war criminal. 30 years later, that same war criminal surfaces in Ukraine, leading to an investigation into the truth about that mission. The movie takes place in two time periods, with Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Marton Csokas playing the Israelis in the flashbacks, and Ciarán Hinds, Helen Mirren, and Tom Wilkinson playing the same characters in the present day. The movie appears to be a remake of a 2007 film of the same name by Assaf Bernstein, but in this case the script was rewritten by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Stardust). John Madden has previously directed Shakespeare in Love, Proof and Killshot, the latter of which seems the most applicable, although it wasn't very well-received.

The trailer for the upcoming film The Debt has been released, and thanks to Yahoo we are able to take a look at John Madden's Nazi-grabbing thriller, a remake of the 2007 film of the same name by Assaf Bernstein.
Starring Sam Worthington, Marton Csokas, Jessica Chastain, Ciarán Hinds, Tom Wilkinson and the indomitable Helen Mirren, it follows the story of three Mossad Agents who, 30 years after capturing and killing a Nazi, learn that their work is still unfinished. Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn are among those who wrote the screenplay, and from what we can see from the trailer, this might well be worth a trip to the cinema.

Here's a really intense trailer for John Madden's upcoming thriller "The Debt," which is now on schedule for a release Dec. 29, 2010. It's a remake of Assaf Bernstein’s Israeli film “Ha-Hov," and it looks good!
The film follows three Israeli intelligence agents (Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain & Marton Csokas) who catch a Nazi war criminal during the 1960s but never grant him an official trail.
But more than 30 years later, when their target’s escape threatens to expose their old cover-up, one of the agents is forced to track him (Jesper Christensen) down and eliminate him once and for all.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. British director John Madden's upcoming film, The Debt, will get an original score by Thomas Newman. The dark drama, which stars Sam Worthington, Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson, tells the story about a Nazi war criminal who is pursued by a group of agents. Just like another film Newman has been in involved in recently, Brothers, The Debt is a Us remake of an award-winning foreign film. Brothers, remade by Jim Sheridan, was originally a Danish film by Susanne Bier, and The Debt a film from Israel directed by Assaf Bernstein in 2007. Miramax should release The Debt some time next year. Thomas Newman is also doing the music for Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

- Helen Mirren is on on board to play a Mossad agent (think CIA) in John Madden's English language remake of Assaf Bernstein's 2007 Israeli film "HaHov". To be distributed by Miramax films (most likely in late 09'), The Debt will see the title role, a female protagonist split into two parts: circa the '60s and '90s. Mirren was last seen packing heat in Lee Daniels' Shadowboxer. The Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman spec follows a trio of 1960s Israeli intelligence agents who pursue a Nazi war criminal only to have him escape. More than 30 years later, their target re-emerges, forcing one of the agents to track him down and preserve their decades-old cover-up. Variety reports that filming will begin next year in the U.K., Germany and Israel. We'll be getting a triple dose of Mirren next year, she stars in Kevin Macdonald's thriller State of Play,

Assaf Bernstein’s original film follows three Israeli intelligence agents who catch a Nazi war criminal during the 1960s but never grant him an official trail.
But more than 30 years later, when their target’s escape threatens to expose their old cover-up, one of the agents is forced to track him down and eliminate him once and for all.
Mirren plays one of the Mossad agents in the project, which begins production next year.
Mirren, who won an Oscar for her performance in “The Queen,” was last seen in “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.” She will next star in Iain Softley’s adventure “Inkheart,” due in theaters Jan. 9, 2009.

- It has been a strange, difficult trajectory for the director who (with the big help of the Weinsteins) once won the Academy Award for Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love, and now has his latest film shelved for the better part of a couple of years. John Madden has an outside chance at helming The Debt before the Weinstein Co. and MGM decide what to do with the release of the 1989 Elmore Leonard book to screen project Killshot. Variety reports that Madden is in negotiations to direct. John Madden is in negotiations to helm the Nazi-hunter thriller "The Debt" for Miramax.
Matthew Vaughn, director of Marvel Comics' upcoming "Thor," adapted the remake of the 2007 Israeli feature "HaHov" with writer Jane Goldman ("Stardust"). Vaughn, who will produce the project with Marv Films partner Kris Thykier, also is a partner with longtime collaborator Guy Ritchie in Ska Films ("Snatch").
The feature would mark Madden's first jump from the Weinstein-run Miramax to its new Daniel Battsek-led regime. Most of his directorial efforts have been Miramax projects, including "Shakespeare in Love," "Ethan Frome," "Mrs. Brown" and "Proof." His most recent film was the Weinstein Co./MGM thriller "Killshot," filmed in 2005 and still awaiting release.

Miramax declined comment. Madden is repped by Caa and U.K.-based Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.

- A Blind Item today, ladies and gentlemen. What studio company seems to be ripping off Dreamworks' 2005 critically-acclaimed Israeli hit about hit men? Taking the hint from the marketplace, Miramax Films is doing a remake of Israeli thriller The Debt. Matthew Vaughn of Layer Cake fame wrote the script with his writing partner Jane Goldman, which centers on three Mossad agents twenty years after WWII's end. The Mossad agents get tapped when a Nazi criminal (the "Surgeon of Birkenau" - a Josef Mengele reference, anyone?) is still alive and on the loose, leading to a hot pursuit across Europe. Hmm. I feel like I've maybe seen this before? A Steven Spielberg labeled product, if I am correct? That may be simplistic way to distill this script. As much as I love European locales and Jewish spies, try watching the original first - Assaf Bernstein's 2007 film "HaHov". The trailer on

Debt revolves around three Mossad agents who, 20 years after World War II's end, learn that a Nazi war criminal is still alive and set out to pursue him across Europe. Miramax acquired worldwide rights to the project, which Vaughn and producing partner Kris Thykier will produce through their Marv Films shingle. Miramax production and development vp David Greenbaum will oversee the project under president of production Keri Putnam.
Vaughn and Goldman were behind Stardust, the Neil Gaiman adaptation released last year by Paramount; Vaughn directed the film and co-wrote it with Goldman.
