Too Many Murders
Hitchcoc1 May 2021
There's a big guy named Tuttle who has political aspirations. He has begun to control the voting process. He is a sociopath. A student of Charlie's approaches him, warns him, and then dies. This leads to an investigation where the bad guys hold the cards. Sometimes this show goes a bit far in verisimilitude and this is one of them.

A critical look needed in 2023.

Anyone who watches this episode in 2023, when looking at the last few years, is led to an obvious conclusion: the description of the political problems faced by several countries, generated by electronically controlled polls, and I speak as a Brazilian, although I know that this type of situation affects nations like the USA, is almost explicit.

This episode does not feature any outstanding performances by any of the actors and, in the series as a whole, it turns out to be another of the episodes in which Charlie presents always surprising solutions to problems that, for the most part, escape the traditional approaches of the political series. Electronic voter machines is certainly one of those themes that is almost impossible to include in a common script that does not have mathematics as a plot.

This certainly leads, as well as other episodes in this series, the viewer to look at NUMB3RS in a much more critical way than was possible at the time the series was produced. And now this show has done better, I have to admit. It is one of those series that has stood the test of time very well.

I would never write a review of NUMB3RS without calling attention to its best aspect: the focus on social relationships and family, especially the coexistence of brothers Charlie and Don and their father, played by Judd Hisch.

There's just one thing...

Warning: Spoilers
As a whole, this episode is up to the usual good standard of Numbers.

Villain thwarted by the power of maths! It's lovely to see Oswald again too.

What I don't like is the storyline chosen to write Diane Farr out temporarily. Obviously, Megan is forced to take the new assignment *because* Diane Farr needs to leave to have her baby (& apparently only just in time as she seems to have barely finished this episode before she popped! All the sitting, carrying files, standing behind monitors and so forth was becoming quite amusing too) but what the writers actually do is portray the FBI as an organisation which will FORCE one of its employees to take an assignment against their will. I don't see Megan going along with this AT ALL. I think she'd resign before she was forced to take a job which pretty clearly has some connection to torturing prisoners. I'm also sure she'd seek help or at least advice from Don. So, yeah, congrats to Diane on the baby but a big boo to the writers for not thinking of a better way to write her exit.

Unless of course, the FBI *would* force an employee to take an assignment against their will....
