The great looney escape
TheLittleSongbird4 November 2019
Love 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. Did as a child, even when not understanding all of the humour it was still very funny and well made and loved the theme tune and characters. Love it even more now, not just for those reasons (and those reasons are very important in liking a film, show and cartoon or not) but also because the writing is funnier and more imaginative, now that more has been gotten out of the gags, references and in-jokes due to understanding it more.

'Tiny Toon Adventures' is equally great when an episode has an individual, or one single, story and when an episode is made up of a series of segments tied together by a theme usually. Have a slight preference for the former because in the segment-structured episodes there can be one segment that is weaker than the others and whether one likes an individual segment or the episode can be dependent on what their stance is on the character most focused upon.

"Gang Busters" is an example of the former type of episode and while it is not one of my favourite 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes, or even those that have an individual story, it is still great. The animation is crisp, with lovingly detailed backgrounds, beautiful colours and well drawn characters. Also continue to love the expressions, gestures and how the characters react in the animation, something that was great in classic Looney Tunes too. The music is as good as the old Looney Tunes cartoons (prime-Looney Tunes, not most of the 60s ones) in being characterful and adding to the action, if not quite enhancing it in the same way. It always helps to have a memorable theme tune, and the one for 'Tiny Toon Adventures' is suitably hip and very catchy.

Do think that the writing has been wackier in other episodes, but there is an element of that and the wit is still razor sharp. The references, to the likes of 'Dragnet', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'What's Up Doc' were funny, inspired and also quite affectionate, not feeling randomly placed either. They are also ones that most should get but nothing should be held against them if not, it took me a while when younger when my film and television taste was not very broad.

In terms of story, "Gang Busters" is slight and not always very surprising, but it was impossible to dislike the witty character interactions or seeing Buster, Plucky and Babs on top form. Montana Max is one of those divisive characters and he's grown on me. The voice acting from all is very good.

Overall, great. 9/10

Hip Hop Busters

This episode is an honorable mention, it's one of the singular story episodes and it's a good one. What I like about this episode is despite a straightforward plotline it just turns from one thing to another.

The first half is pretty much your prison escape thriller. It's funny how despite how helpful Plucky is, he just seems to make things worse. From his plan to escape which backfires and wasn't even a good plan from the beginning, but also just plain doesn't know when the shut up.

One funny scene is when both get into the hole no thanks to Plucky. And it's pretty much the old darkness cartoon bit where the characters are in the dark and we only see their eyes. I really love that there are two video game reference jokes as we see both morphing their eyes and playing "Pong" and "Pac Man".

The second half turns into a 90's hip hop MTV musical, where Buster is beating Max's gang with his own hip hop. That half is a lot of fun and no doubt acknowledges the 90's as hip hop was one of the big things on the rise. Really liked seeing the toonsters in the 90's hip hop get up as well as the hip hop tune they dish out on Max which I found a lot of fun and wouldn't mind downloading and playing on my phone. And also Hampton is really funny as he tries to get into the hip hop but fails twice as he just not up to the times in music.

All I can say is when you mess with Buster Bunny, you get served.
