Who doesn't love a good crossover? Besides the fact that they settle nerds' constant debates of "who would win in a fight between ___ and ___?," there's something so exciting about seeing the main characters of two or more different franchises coming together for the first time ever. Another reason why crossovers have so much appeal with audiences is that there are often legal reasons why characters from one series can't mingle with those of another, making the times when they do meet on the big (or small) screen all the more special.
Crossovers got a massive boost in popularity due to the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, crossovers haven't only been relegated to the superhero realm; for decades, there have been numerous other examples of fictional worlds colliding across numerous genres. In fact, well before Nick Fury appeared at the end of "Iron Man" to tell Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative,...

The Meg's success has got some people wondering if there's gas in the oversized snake tank.
Resident Evil franchise masterminds Constantin Film and Jb Pictures have got a Titanoboa movie in development. The movie is looking to The Meg for inspiration as it plans to feature the giant extinct snake coming back from the dead somehow to wreak havoc, likely on some wholly unprepared humans.
The Titanoboa movie is being fast-tracked, according to Deadline, and will begin filming next year. There are no cast details to share with you yet, but Tony Giglio is penning the script right now. Jeremy Bolt and Robert Kulzer, the team working to make Monster Hunter a success, are behind the film.
The biggest snake in noted history, the Titanoboa has been long dead for about 58 million years, but back in its heydey it weighed about 2,500 lbs and grew up to 42 ft long,...

Horror comedy Smothered is written and directed by actor turned director John Schneider. Yes, you did read that correctly… Actor John Schneider, who many will know from family-friendly productions and his roles as Bo Duke on Dukes of Hazzard and more recently Jonathan Kent, aka Superman’s dad, on Smallville, has turned his hand to writing and directing in more recent years but who knew he had a penchant for penning horror? Admittedly he has had roles in low-budget monster movies such as Super Shark, Snow Beast and Lake Placid 2 but I had no idea he was such a horror fan – he certainly has to be to create such a love letter to the horror community as Smothered.

The latest computer game to be turned into a movie is the best selling game from ‘Company of Heroes’. It’s a real-time strategy game in which you have to navigate your soldiers tanks across maps in order to defeat your enemies coming in at your front the opposite direction.
The new movie has a very Band of Brothers feel to it and actually has one character from that series playing the same role in the movie. Company of Heroes is released on DVD today and stars Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan), Chad Collins (Lake Placid 2, Sniper Reloaded), Vinnie Jones (The Tomb, Snatch), Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger, “Band of Brothers”), and Jürgen Prochnow (The Da Vinci Code, Das Boot).

When it comes to reviewing a Part 4, I often like to start out with a quick and hopefully helpful little "franchise history lesson," just to bring everyone up to speed -- but is that really necessary at this point? Probably not. What was once a strange but amusing little matinee movie from a well-known TV producer has (somehow, slowly) turned into a cable TV sequel franchise that exists for nothing more than to fill a random Saturday night slot with a lot of silliness and a bunch of crocodile madness. Congrats to the goofily-named Lake Placid 4: it not only qualifies under those criteria, it's also the most stupidly entertaining entry in this non-franchise since the first one... which wasn't all that great but hey, people who love movies about man-eating crocodiles* can't afford to be all that discerning. But for the sake of tradition: Lake Placid (1999), written by David E. Kelley...

Branded is a dark and mind-bending journey into a surreal, dystopian society where corporate brands have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man’s Misha (Ed Stoppard) passion to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world. The film, also written by Dulerayn and Bradshaw stars Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Mariya Ignatova, Leelee Sobieski, Atanas Srebrev, Ed Stoppard and Max von Sydow. Notable professional, Tatyana 'Tita' Sleptsova (who’s known for The Fourth Kind, Return to House on Haunted Hill, Lake Placid 2 and Manticore) will front the make-up/SFX department.

There’s a large amount of Blus (both horror and non-horror) coming out this week. I tried to condense it down to the most important Horror releases, though I am known to just write whatever I think you guys might like. Star Wars and Citizen Kane are the big classic releases this week, and for decent prices if you’re into that (I do love both). I’m not excited for that butchered Blu release of Star Wars though, I mean really, you were told to cut material out of your movie for a reason. Fuck you, Lucas.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Never seen it, but I do consider the Geller T.V. show a rather guilty pleasure of mine, so I might have to check this out…maybe. Is this considered a cult classic?

There’s a new hoodlum prowling around Showtime, and he’s slick enough to not only sneak into Season 7 of Weeds, but he’ll also be hanging around for Season 8. Ian Reed Kesler, who can be seen in 500 Days of Summer, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Lake Placid 2, has been cast in the Season 7 finale of Weeds as “an offbeat hoodlum with a military bent,” and Variety has revealed that the character would also be showing up in Season 8, assuming that Weeds actually has an eighth season.
Aside from the vague description of the character, Showtime hasn’t shared anything about Kesler’s role, but it must be a fairly solid part if the hoodlum makes his appearance in the Season 7 finale and then spills over into Season 8. Weeds does love its cliffhangers so there’s a chance that Kesler’s intro will set up the premise...

Memorial Day 2011 is here and while we should all take time to thank a veteran and active servicemen and women, it also means for us TVphiles - lots of good programming. So either settle in with some popcorn or make sure your DVR is ready to go.
There are movie marathons. Syfy is busting out its greatest hits in the giant monster oeuvre on Friday, followed by "Star Trek" movies all weekend. TCM and AMC are showing nothing but military movies, including classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front," "From Here to Eternity" and "Patton."
If marathons are your thing, you've got everything from "Firefly" and "Doctor Who" to "House Hunters" and "How It's Made." And if you're a sports fan, while the NBA playoffs are on hiatus, you can still watch a ton of baseball, the 2011 French Open or the annual Memorial Day race the Indianapolis 500.

Thq's "Red Faction" games have gone from surprise hit to all-out media assault in the last few years. Comics based on the IP are already out in the wild and the next piece of the multimedia puzzle will now premiere on SyFy on June 4th.

But, the cable network has only just announced the airdate for the new show. It's got a 9 P.M. Et/Pt timeslot and stars the liquid-metal Terminator himsle, Robert Patrick as an older Alec Mason.

Directed By: G.E. Furst
Starring: Colin Ferguson, Yancy Butler, Kacey Barnfield, Michael Ironside.
When local wildlife is brutally mauled and campers are reduced to carcasses, biologist Nathan Bickerman (Colin Ferguson) knows a voracious predator is on the loose.
So does a feisty female hunting guide (Yancy Butler) out for her next trophy. As the body count rises, the local sheriff (Michael Ironside) tries to keep things quiet and keep the tourist coming. But when the horrifying, hulking truth emerges, will anyone be able to stop these cold blooded killers before they claim their next victim?
As is to be expected by a SyFy TV movie, Lake Placid 3 is nothing to write home about. It is however acceptable to be used for entertainment purposes, and would be a fantastic way for you and your friends to have a hilarious good night, when you’re making fun of almost everything about it.

Hold on a second, let me get this straight. There was a Lake Placid 2?!
11 years after they first tore up the box-office, the mutant crocodiles are returning for the second sequel to 1999′s entertaining Lake Placid.
“Get ready for a living, feeding nightmare when a swarm of gigantic crocodiles terrorizes a secluded country lake. When local wildlife is brutally mauled and campers are reduced to carcasses, biologist Nathan Bickerman (Colin Ferguson) knows a voracious predator is on the loose. So does a feisty female hunting guide (Yancy Butler) out for her next trophy. As the body count rises, the local sheriff tries to keep things quiet and keep the tourists coming. Some incredible news fluttered in our ear as we've confirmed that Louise Fletcher (Flowers in the Attic, Exorcist II, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Louis Gossett Jr. (Enemy Mine, The Invaders, Jaws 3D), Edward Asner (Up, "The Mod Squad," "The Invaders," "Mission: Impossible"), and Fionnula Flanagan are all signed on to star inKristoffer Aaron Morgan's H.P. Lovecraftian The Home, which was penned by both Morgan and AICN writer Eric Vespe. It's also worth noting that Brian Cox (Red, Rise of the Apes, Trick 'r Treat) and Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein, Lake Placid 2, Scary Movie 2) are both in discussions. Talk about an astounding cast. There are a few other names being tossed around that will knock your socks off, but it's a bit premature to reveal.

Ok, so you're telling me there was a Lake Placid 2? I have no recall of such an event. But here we are with Lake Placid 3, so I really have to wonder...what the hell else am I missing?
Oh...it's a direct-to-dvd thing. Well now it makes sense. Looks terrible. Bet Michael Ironside has never been prouder. Effects: Lousy. Idea: Lousy. Trailer: Lousy.
If there's a plus side, it's this: Lake Placid 3 already aired on Syfy (or so I gather), and this is the Red Band trailer for the unrated DVD, which shows skin. And based on the trailer, plenty of it. Yep: Nudity, amply available anywhere the internet is sold, is the highlight. Good luck making that work out for you, Lake Placid Trois.

Did you know there's a Lake Placid 3? Did you know there's a Lake Placid 3 starring Colin Ferguson of "Eureka", Yancy Butler of "Witchblade", and the venerable Michael Ironside? Did you know there's a Lake Placid 3 starring Colin Ferguson of "Eureka", Yancy Butler of "Witchblade", and the venerable Michael Ironside premiering this Saturday night on Syfy? Do you care?
Syfy hopes you do care or else the ratings are going to be in the toilet. Then again, how much does Syfy really care given they originally bumped Lake Placid 3 from its June world premiere timeslot in favor of Dinocroc vs. Supergator?
Lake Placid 3 stars Colin Ferguson (“Eureka”) as a game warden who moves his family to Lake Placid, once the site of deadly crocodile attacks. Locals assure him the crocs are gone, but his mischievous young son finds a few baby crocs and begins feeding them.

After last year’s season finale of Weeds I was both concerned and excited for the return of the show for another season. With the sheer force of a cricket mallet it would have been near criminal for the show not to return but where it goes could be a crime as well.
When Weeds first came out the show was interesting and compelling. Seeing widowed Nancy Botwin trying to deal with the recent loss of her husband and turning to the sale of marijuana to make ends meet was a fascinating dynamic. Seeing this struggling now single mother with two young boys and trying to appear to have a normal life in the face of the difficulties of being a small time drug dealer played out really well and kept you coming back week after week. This all came to a head, however, in the end of the third...

I wasn't sure what to make of the stack of Ghost House Underground DVD releases. While I tend to be a fan of B-horror movies, there's a fine line between a bad-good one (something like say Wrong Turn 2) and just a flat-out bad-bad one (like another sequel, the unwatchable Lake Placid 2). The balance between absurdity, nonsense and gore has to be just right, and if it is even just a tiny bit off any chance of enjoyment is thrown out the window as quickly as a bloody severed head.
As for an outright good one? I tend not to hold my breath on that front. Just look at those continuing After Dark Horrorfest releases. I can think of maybe one or two of those (2008's The Broken, 2006's Wicked Little Things) that I can admit to having enjoyed, and as far as Ghost House Underground has been concerned...

I've been sitting here for about five minutes trying to decide the best format for this year-end article. Do I just throw out a bunch of titles and then wait for the inevitable response(s) of "Dude, we've seen those ones. Got anything more obscure-ish?" Or do I list Every single horror film that hit the scene in 2008, and then give each one a star rating and a few pithy comments?
But then I remembered how much I love chronological order. My life, for example, is lived chronologically, and I wouldn't have it any other way. So let's start in January and simply slither forward. I'm including only the highlights of each month, so if you're looking for me to make fun of stuff like Pulse 2, Shutter, of freakin' Prom Night, I'm sorry to disappoint you. (Ok, fine: I'll cover the crap too. I just can't say no to gorehounds.

Rag on Sci-Fi Channel original movies all you want - I know I often do; but somebody (besides me) must be tuning in given how much they keep on cranking them out. As a matter of fact, the ratings for these films are steadily increasing. Sci-Fi plans for 36 news films in 2009, and today we're getting a taste of things to come.
The Hollywood Reporter put out a story about the ongoing working arrangement among the Sci-Fi Channel, distribution company Rhi Entertainment, and production company Muse Entertainment. The three newest monster fruits of their creative loins are:
Sand Serpents: Jason "Iron Eagle" Gedrick stars in this monster movie about American combat soldiers in the Afghan desert who battle the Taliban and a horde of giant carnivorous serpents.
Alien Western: An Old West town in the 1890s is the battleground where monstrous buglike machines from another world stage their invasion.
