An Homage To Perry Mason & The Defenders

Warning: Spoilers
All episodes of Boston Legal tend to have 2 story lines or more. In the case of this one, the Denny Crane one is a little weak. Ah, but the bloody bride is one to savor. This is a rare treatment of covering 2 elements from 2 different law series.

The bloody bride running through the court house and the evidence of the murder being circumstantial for Shore's client works very much like a Perry Mason plot. Shore even employs some Mason theatrics in the courtroom quite effectively. The comes the Defenders twist, Shores client is guilty. This comes as a surprise in this episode because it is made to look all the way through it that she isn't. One of the marks of excellence in the EG Marshall series was that often the viewer would find out the client is guilty.

I won't spoil how Shore makes out with the case except to say that for once, this series, like the Defenders, does not let the client get away without punishment.

Finally, we have a case which has a series of twists and turns. We have our friend Renata on trial for murdering the man she was about to marry. Of course, Alan will take any case that seems hopeless, and he nearly always wins. I was ready for the jury to buy his cock and bull closing. But for once things turn again. Nice job. The less interesting thing was the technicality used to get that jerk who stole the cell phone acquitted. If Shore's tactics and that other lawyer's were acceptable every time, no one would ever have to pay for their crimes.
