Exceeded My Expectations
dolhemming28 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
After a long wait, we finally get to see "what comes next" as the story of heroes and enemies goes forward. I thought that this episode brought the plot to a new level of purpose, determination, and also much closer to a possible confrontation. It was well voiced by the actors and (Slight Spoiler)as a fan of Mark Hamill, it is a thrill to hear him voice the character of Fire Lord Ozai. You won't understand what happens in this episode, if you didn't watch the last episode of Season Two, so I recommend that you find that one and watch it first, if you missed it the first time around. I highly recommend this episode as the start of a fantastic Season Three! By the way, my cable system is airing Avatar at a later hour than last year; Friday at 8:30 p.m. EST. I'm wondering why so late? Anyway, it's the only cartoon series I follow with anticipation of "what comes next". Great Job!

Great episode

Great opening episode to the final season.

  • you have an ironic moment being how it was the Dai-Li agents who took down the wall instead of the fire nation.

  • old crew members rejoin, Bato and jets gang
  • fire lord Ozai reveal
  • Aang waking up to the world believing he's dead
  • emotional moments : katara's anger towards her dad for leaving her behind. Depth for her character. Aang's anger towards himself for not finishing the job and making ppl think he failed. Aang burning his staff. To me it means that he's done running away and he will just move foward. He has to hide his identity in order to get his honor back. And that day will come once he rises and reveals he's alive.

  • Zuko and Azula back home as supposedly heroes.

  • Azula being the smart villain she is and set Zuko up.

  • roku and yue helping aang

Overall good episode.

"I need to redeem myself. I need to regain my honour"

Warning: Spoilers
You know, I'm sensing a theme here. Redemption. Zuko's goal in the first two seasons was to redeem himself to the Fire Nation. Aang's goal was to redeem himself for having run away. Come this episode, Aang's goal is to redeem himself for having failed to save the Earth Kingdom at Ba Sing Se. And given that Aang is now emotionally and physically scarred, it makes sense for him to be as short-tempered, aggressive and disagreeable as he now is (like Zuko was in the first season.)

I like how Princess Yue reminds Aang that he saved the world once and that has not been forgotten as well as the emphasis on Roku being the Avatar who vanished. I also how despite Aang being determined to do everything himself, Sokka, Katara and Toph seek him out to join him.

Beyond that, I like how Katara opens up about her frustrations with her father which neither she nor we knew she had but which make sense given "you still are a kid".

I also like how Sokka is a talented enough to strategist that he's able to adapt to this situation. (And it makes sense that he'd view Aang being believed to be dead as an asset even if it horrified Aang.

(I also like everything about Zuko this episode)

The only negative aspect I can find in this episode is that Zuko and Mai's relationship is rushed but given this isn't a primarily romance driven show that's a nitpick.
