"You have no idea how revealing dung can be, it's exciting stuff." Fifth episode.
poolandrews6 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Primeval #1.5 starts on a golf course when one unlucky golfer is brutally killed by something nasty, Home Office official Claudia Brown (Lucy Brown) is alerted & gets Professor Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) & the team on the case. They deduce from the evidence at hand that the golfer was attacked & torn apart by some aerial predator that came from an anomaly in the sky, how are the team going to stop flying predators that can disappear into the sky in a flash & fly just about anywhere in search of food?

Episode 5 from season 1 of this made-for-British TV sci-fi adventure series was directed by Jamie Payne & is yet another OK time waster but nothing particularly special. The script as usual for this series takes it's inspiration from other sources & in this episode it's obviously Alfred Hitchcock's Birds (1963) as well as a bit of Bats (1999) thrown in there for good measure along with any other flying monster type film. Again I didn't think this was that great, as the series is progressing I find myself disliking the character's more & more while the stories all seem to be pretty clichéd & very familiar. At only 45 minutes in length it doesn't last that long & doesn't bore which is it's main saving grace, I will watch episode 6 which is the final one of the first series but I'll do so out of commitment rather than interest or because I really want to.

There are some good CGI computer effects here, again both the different types of monsters on show here are totally fictitious & made up. There are a couple of decent moments during this episode but nothing that really stays in the memory. It's well made with good production values & the acting is alright apart from Lucy Brown the Home Office woman who is just terrible, she only ever seems to have one tone of voice.

Primeval #1.5 is another average time waster, it's OK to sit down & watch as a piece of forgettable sci-fi fun but little else. To be perfectly honest I'm not particularly looking forward to episode 6.

Attack of the flying dinosaurs
Tweekums26 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens a couple of incompetents are playing golf and inevitably one of them is killed by a prehistoric terror… in this case a type of aerial dinosaur. The team are soon heading to the site along with an uninvited guest… as Connor left Abby's flat he left a window open and Rex followed him into the car and on to the golf course. When Connor gets there he realises Rex is with him but can't catch him again. While he is chasing Rex the other members of the team have examined the victim, found the anomaly and sighted a giant flying dinosaur. Cutter is determined to take it alive; they are successful in catching it but Claudia is left with a concussion that causes her to suffer temporary blindness. It isn't long before they realise that the creature they have caught isn't responsible for the golfer's death… there is something else out there. It turns out there are a lot of 'something elses'; a swarm of small flesh eating flying dinosaurs that are drawn to the scent of blood.

This was another thrilling episode with another type of creatures that we haven't seen before. The way the swarming dinosaurs attack is very reminiscent of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. The CGI for both dinosaur types is pretty impressive making the threat seem real. The subplot involving Rex following Connor was a bit of a distraction… the fact that Abby even kept Rex seems to be an excuse to show her in her undies as she keeps her flat hot for Rex. Connor's continual messing up also proves to be more irritating than amusing. The way Claudia finally escaped the attacking dinosaurs was exciting even though there was no explanation as to why Helen Cutter turned up then disappeared again; clearly a case of deus ex machina. There are a few other unlikely moments but none that spoilt my enjoyment of the episode; it contained a good mix of excitement and amusing moments. I've enjoyed the series so far and look forward to seeing the season one conclusion.

"What do you want me to do, pay it compensation?"
DooMCommentaries19 November 2014
One of my personal favourite episodes in the series, 1.5 brings together a great blend of aerial predators, rebellious scientists, and a secretive love story. Obviously, the poor chap who wrote the other review knows absolutely nothing whatsoever about prehistory, as both creatures, the Pteranodon and the Anurognathus, were real. As far as I can tell, the plot seems very original, and doesn't seem to borrow too much from either one of the two titles he listed, other than flying creatures attacking people. The setting of a golf course was quite ingenious, and was perfect for the creatures they used: wide open spaces for the Pteranodon, and a cramped environment for the Anurognathus. The only complaint that I have, is that the lone Anurognathus severing the only phone cable is quite clichéd, and I sort of laughed at Cutter stifling his own profanity. Just let it out, man!
